Netflix error NW-2-5 is a connection timeout: your TV, console, streaming player, Blu-ray player, or cable box took too long to reach Netflix. It usually points to the device or network—not a password or billing problem. Start with More Details → Check your network, then restart the device and home network before changing apps, accounts, or hardware. Netflix’s official troubleshooting sequence is documented in its NW-2-5 help article.
Fastest fix: follow this order
- On the error screen, select More Details → Check your network. If that option is unavailable, run the device’s built-in network test or open another internet app.
- Unplug the streaming device. Wait at least 15 seconds, reconnect it, turn it on, and try Netflix. For a cable box, Netflix says to wait 3 minutes.
- Turn the device off. Unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnect them, and wait at least 1 minute—or until their internet indicators stabilize—before turning the device back on.
- Improve the connection: move the router higher and closer, reduce interference, or connect the device directly by Ethernet.
- On PlayStation or Xbox, restore DNS and proxy settings to their automatic/default values.
- Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, custom DNS, ad-blocking DNS, and router-level filtering for a test.
- Try another network, such as a permitted phone hotspot, to separate a home-network problem from a device problem.
- If several devices fail, or the device cannot reach Netflix after these tests, contact your ISP or the administrator of the network.
What NW-2-5 actually means
NW-2-5 does not identify one specific broken component. It means Netflix’s connection attempt timed out. The device may be offline, connected to weak or congested Wi-Fi, unable to resolve DNS, blocked by a VPN or filter, or affected by an ISP routing problem. A device can say “connected to Wi-Fi” while still being unable to reach the internet or Netflix: that status only confirms a local connection to the router.
The code also does not prove that Netflix is operating normally or experiencing an outage. Check whether the problem is limited to one device, affects every device on your network, or disappears on cellular data. Those comparisons are more useful than repeatedly signing out or changing your Netflix password.

- Network test fails: repair the device’s Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection first.
- Other apps fail too: investigate the device, router, modem, captive portal, or ISP rather than your Netflix account.
- Other apps work but Netflix fails on one device: suspect the Netflix app state, device network profile, DNS/proxy settings, or firmware.
- Netflix fails on several devices: suspect the router, modem, ISP DNS, a network-wide VPN/filter, or a managed-network restriction.
- A hotspot works but home Wi-Fi does not: that strongly implicates the home router or ISP path, although it is not absolute proof.
Restart the device completely
Use a power disconnect, not just the remote’s standby button. Unplug the player, TV, console, or box, wait the required interval, then reconnect it. Avoid unplugging equipment while it is installing a firmware update. If a device still fails, use its network settings to forget and reconnect to Wi-Fi, if that option exists, and install any available system update.

Restart the modem and router in the right sequence
- Turn off the affected streaming device.
- Unplug both the modem and router. If you have a combined modem/router, unplug that one unit.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and router.
- Wait at least one minute, and longer if the status lights show that the ISP connection is still starting.
- Turn on the streaming device and retry Netflix.
If your setup has two router-like boxes (for example, an ISP gateway plus a separate router), restart both. Do not press a factory-reset button; rebooting is the intended test.
Fix weak or unstable Wi-Fi
Netflix recommends moving the router closer to the player, placing it on a raised surface rather than the floor, and keeping it away from metal appliances and other wireless equipment. A repeater placed in the same room as the device can help coverage; ask your ISP whether the router needs a firmware update or replacement. A crowded or intermittent signal can time out even when a speed test briefly looks good.
Use Ethernet as a diagnostic
Connect the device directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, then reconnect its network or restart it and test Netflix.
- Ethernet works, Wi-Fi fails: the likely problem is coverage, interference, congestion, or Wi-Fi configuration.
- Ethernet also fails: investigate DNS, the router/modem, ISP service, device software, or a Netflix-side incident.
Ethernet is often a better first purchase than a new router because it tests the suspected wireless path directly. It cannot fix an ISP outage or upstream DNS failure.
Restore DNS and proxy settings on consoles
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Go to Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection. Choose Wi-Fi or LAN, select Custom, then use:

Choose Test Connection, then open Netflix. These labels can vary slightly with system software; Netflix lists the current sequence in its official instructions.
Xbox One and Xbox Series
Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system → Settings → General → Network settings → Advanced settings → DNS settings → Automatic. Retry Netflix.

Xbox 360
Open Guide → Settings → System Settings → Network Settings, select the network, choose Configure Network → DNS Settings → Automatic, then power-cycle the Xbox and test again.
Do not apply these console paths to a smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, or Blu-ray player. Those devices use manufacturer-specific menus; restore network settings to automatic/default using the device manual.
Custom network settings that can block Netflix
Ask whether the network uses a VPN, proxy, custom DNS, parental-control service, ad-blocking DNS, firewall, or security filter. A recently replaced router may also have copied unusual settings. Temporarily disable or restore these controls for testing, then re-enable them one at a time. Do not leave security protections disabled permanently. Netflix does not require Google or Cloudflare DNS as a universal fix. Automatic DNS is the safest first correction. Manual DNS can affect filtering, parental controls, local-device discovery, and other services; involve your ISP if DNS remains suspect.

Managed networks may require a browser sign-in, registration of the TV’s MAC address, or approval from an administrator. Hotels, schools, workplaces, apartment systems, and cafés may limit users, block streaming, or become congested. A TV may not display a captive-portal login page at all. Cellular, satellite, and phone-hotspot connections can connect successfully yet remain too slow or unstable for sustained video.
Contact the network owner and ask whether Netflix streaming is permitted. If the network prohibits personal routers, an extender or mesh system cannot bypass that policy.
Use Fast.com, but know its limits
On a phone or computer connected to the same network, open Fast.com. Netflix recommends it as a direct speed and connectivity check. A failed or unusually poor result supports a network investigation; a good result does not prove that the affected TV or console has working DNS, an unfiltered route, or a correct network profile.
When to call the ISP
Escalate when the steps above fail, multiple devices are affected, or another network works. Give the ISP:

- the affected device and model;
- whether it uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet;
- whether other devices and streaming apps work;
- whether Fast.com loads;
- whether the issue occurs only on the home network; and
- whether a VPN, proxy, custom DNS, or filtering service is enabled.
You can say: “Netflix on my [device] shows NW-2-5. Please check for an outage, DNS failure, or routing problem, and confirm that the device can reach secure.netflix.com, appboot.netflix.com, uiboot.netflix.com, and fast.com.” These domains are for the ISP or network administrator to check; most users do not need to create manual whitelist entries.

Only after network troubleshooting. Signing out and in mainly addresses authentication problems. Reinstalling or clearing app data may help damaged local app data, but cannot repair weak Wi-Fi, DNS failure, or an ISP outage. A factory reset is a last resort because it removes apps, accounts, preferences, and saved network credentials. Before considering it, have your Wi-Fi name/password and Netflix sign-in details available, as Netflix cautions in its not-connected guidance.
When equipment is worth considering
Buy nothing until testing identifies a coverage problem.
- Ethernet cable: the lowest-cost diagnostic when the device is near the router.
- Extender or wired access point: reasonable when one distant room has weak coverage; placement matters, and an extender cannot fix an ISP or DNS fault.
- Mesh Wi-Fi: appropriate when several rooms and devices suffer coverage dropouts.
- Replacement router: consider only after the ISP confirms that the existing unit is faulty, unsupported, or inadequate.
A new router will not fix a Netflix outage, a blocked hotel network, a device firmware bug, or an upstream ISP problem. Prices and availability change, so treat any product listing as a separate buying decision rather than a guaranteed NW-2-5 cure.

Why does Netflix work on my phone but not my TV?
Your phone may be using cellular data while the TV uses home Wi-Fi. Test the TV by Ethernet or another permitted network to isolate the path.
Does changing DNS to 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 fix NW-2-5?
Not universally. Restore DNS to Automatic first, especially on PlayStation and Xbox, and ask the ISP to investigate DNS if the problem remains.
Can Ethernet fix the error?
It can fix a Wi-Fi coverage or interference problem. If Ethernet also fails, investigate the router, DNS, ISP, device software, or service status.

Should I factory-reset my TV?
No—not initially. A factory reset erases apps, accounts, settings, and network credentials and should be reserved for persistent device-specific failures after network tests.
The Bottom Line
NW-2-5 is a timeout, not a diagnosis of one part. Test the connection, power-cycle the device and modem/router in Netflix’s sequence, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet or another network, restore custom DNS/proxy settings, and involve the ISP when the evidence points upstream. Those tests usually identify the fault without an unnecessary factory reset or router purchase.
