The “Video format not supported” message usually does not mean you need to convert a video file. YouTube TV streams the program; the playback failure can instead come from an unsupported browser or device, blocked DRM, an HDMI/HDCP connection, an HDR or resolution mismatch, or a temporary app fault. Start with the fix that matches where you watch, and stop once playback returns.
For a computer, check browser support and protected-content settings first. For a TV or streaming device, focus on updates, HDMI connections, and display output. YouTube TV’s supported-device guidance cited here is for the United States; check its current compatibility list for your exact model.
Quick fixes to try
- Use a supported, updated browser or device.
- Enable protected content or Widevine DRM in the browser.
- Disconnect external displays, docks, splitters, or other HDMI equipment.
- Restart the browser, device, TV, and router.
- Update YouTube TV, the browser, operating system, and device firmware.
- Reinstall the app or test the same program on another supported device.
- Try SDR or a lower resolution, and check the HDMI connection.
The message means YouTube TV could not establish a playable video path. It does not, by itself, identify the cause. A useful first clue: if audio plays but video is black, investigate an external display or HDCP connection before blaming internet speed. YouTube TV specifically lists external displays as a possible cause of audio-without-video playback.

On computers, YouTube TV lists the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Update your browser, close and reopen it, then try the same channel or recording again. YouTube TV suggests considering Chrome for the best experience; that is guidance from the service, not a guarantee that switching browsers fixes every error. Other browsers may work, but they are not listed as the baseline in YouTube TV’s computer requirements.

If you use Brave or another privacy-focused browser, first test the same program in a current Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. If it works there, the original browser’s DRM or privacy settings are more likely suspects.
On a TV or streaming box, check the exact model and generation against YouTube TV’s current supported-device list. Examples include selected Roku devices, Samsung and LG smart TVs from 2017 onward, selected Vizio SmartCast TVs, Apple TV 4th generation and Apple TV 4K, Chromecast with Google TV, listed Fire TV devices, Android TV and Google TV devices, and current PlayStation and Xbox families. This is not a blanket guarantee for every model or regional variant. An app being installable does not prove every playback mode is supported.
Older hardware has additional caveats: YouTube TV warns that first-generation Chromecast can have more errors and take up to 30 seconds to open. Some devices with 512 MB or less of memory may offer a different experience or lack features. For Android, the app store’s compatibility result for your particular device is important; if it says the app is incompatible, reinstalling will not make that hardware supported.

2. Allow protected content and DRM
Premium streaming can rely on digital rights management (DRM). Google’s Widevine system is used for protected media on platforms including Chrome and Firefox. If a browser cannot access its content-decryption component, protected video may fail even while ordinary YouTube clips play. This is a plausible cause, not a confirmed explanation for every YouTube TV format error.

Chrome
- Open More → Settings.
- Go to Privacy and security → Site settings.
- Select Additional content settings → Protected content IDs.
- Make sure protected-content playback is not blocked; allow the relevant protected-content setting if it appears.
- Restart Chrome and retry YouTube TV.
Google notes that blocking protected content can prevent it from playing. See Chrome’s protected-content instructions.
Firefox
- Open Firefox Settings, then General.
- Find Digital Rights Management (DRM) Content.
- Enable Play DRM-controlled content and restart Firefox if prompted.
If the labels differ, follow Mozilla’s current DRM help.
Brave
- Open
brave://settings/extensions. - Turn on Use Widevine digital rights management (DRM) component.
- Relaunch Brave, then refresh YouTube TV.
Brave says Widevine is disabled by default after installation and is needed by many protected streaming services. If playback still fails, its Widevine guidance suggests toggling it off and on, relaunching, and refreshing. Do not download Widevine from a third-party site; use the browser’s built-in component.
Privacy extensions, content filters, VPNs, blocked cookies, or anti-fingerprinting settings can also interfere. For diagnosis, temporarily disable them only for YouTube TV or test a clean browser profile; do not weaken security settings globally as a permanent fix.

3. Disconnect external displays and HDMI accessories
On a computer, disconnect a second monitor, television, USB-C dock, capture card, or HDMI splitter. Close and reopen the browser, then test on the computer’s built-in display. If that works, reconnect equipment one item at a time to find which part of the display chain causes the failure.
On a TV setup, connect the streaming device directly to the TV temporarily instead of routing it through a receiver, switch, splitter, or capture device. Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable, try another TV input, and test a known-good cable. Google’s device requirements for protected, high-value video include output-protection considerations such as HDCP. The specific requirements depend on the device, content, and output mode; a faster internet plan cannot fix a failed HDMI/HDCP handshake.
4. Power-cycle the device and router
- Close the YouTube TV app or browser.
- Turn off the TV or streaming device and unplug it for about 30 seconds.
- Restart it, then unplug the router for about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the router, wait for internet service to return, and retry playback.
YouTube TV recommends power-cycling the device and router. A full restart can clear stale app state, a failed playback session, or a temporary HDMI handshake; it is low-risk, but not a universal fix.
5. Update the app, browser, system, and firmware
Check for updates to YouTube TV, the browser, the operating system, and the TV or streaming device’s firmware. Depending on where you watch, that may mean Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS, tvOS, Roku OS, Fire TV software, Google TV software, or console firmware. YouTube TV recommends installing available system updates and keeping its app current.

After updating, restart the device. If the error remains, sign out and back in, then test more than one channel and both live TV and a recording. If only one program fails, do not assume the entire device is incompatible; the problem may be temporary or content-specific.
6. Reinstall YouTube TV and test another device
If the error appears only in the app, uninstall YouTube TV, restart the device, reinstall the app from its official store, sign in again, and try playback. Reinstallation may help with corrupted app state, but it cannot make an unsupported device or faulty HDMI chain compatible.
Next, test the same program on another supported device—such as a current Chrome, Firefox, or Safari browser, a supported phone or tablet, or another supported TV device. The comparison narrows the cause:
Recommended Free Tools
- One device fails: focus on its firmware, app, output settings, and HDMI path.
- Several devices fail on the same network: test another network if possible, then consider a network or service issue.
- Several streaming apps fail on one device: contact the device manufacturer; the problem may extend beyond YouTube TV.
- YouTube TV alone fails across supported devices: use YouTube TV support rather than buying replacement hardware immediately.
7. Adjust HDR, 4K, SDR, or display output
If the error occurs on a television, especially after changing equipment or picture settings, temporarily test a simpler output: 1080p instead of 4K, SDR instead of HDR, a different HDMI input, or a lower refresh rate if the device offers one. These are diagnostic changes, not necessarily the best permanent settings. If playback returns, the issue is more likely in the output chain or a compatibility negotiation than in the recording itself.

Roku
For an HDCP error, YouTube TV says to enable the TV’s HDMI Ultra HD Color setting. For choppy playback, its Roku guidance suggests Settings → Display type, then testing an available option such as 4K 30 Hz TV, 4K 60 Hz TV, or 4K HDR 60 Hz. Options vary by Roku and TV.
Apple TV
For certain blank-screen or flickering cases, try Settings → Video and Audio → Format and select an SDR option. Keep Match Dynamic Range on, or test with it off if playback improves. YouTube TV’s guidance mentions an issue associated with Apple TV app version 1.13.1 and newer; app behavior and version numbers change, so treat that note as version-specific rather than a universal current diagnosis.
Other TV and streaming devices
Check the device’s display or video-output menu for HDR, resolution, and refresh-rate settings. If a receiver or soundbar sits between the streaming device and TV, bypass it for one test. If lowering output settings fixes playback, check the capabilities and firmware of each component before changing settings permanently.

| What you notice | Likely area to check | First test |
|---|---|---|
| Audio plays, but video is black | External display, HDMI, or HDCP | Disconnect external displays or connect the streamer directly to the TV |
| Works in Chrome but not Brave | Widevine or browser privacy settings | Enable Widevine and retest |
| Only one TV or streaming device fails | App, firmware, HDMI path, or HDR output | Update, restart, and test another HDMI input or device |
| Only 4K or HDR playback fails | Output capability or display-chain negotiation | Try SDR or 1080p temporarily |
| The app cannot be installed | Device may be unsupported | Check the current official compatibility list and app-store message |
| Every device fails | Network, account/location, or service issue | Test another network and contact YouTube TV support if it persists |
Check network and location after the device tests
Network problems more commonly cause buffering, reduced quality, or interruptions than a literal format error, so do not start by buying faster internet. Confirm other sites or apps work, restart Wi-Fi, try Ethernet if available, close bandwidth-heavy downloads, and test a different network if possible. You can temporarily lower playback quality through the player’s Settings → Quality menu. YouTube TV cites at least 3 Mbps for an optimal viewing experience in its troubleshooting guidance; that figure is not a guarantee of stable HD or 4K in every home.
Location checks are secondary because location problems more often produce availability or local-channel symptoms than this format message. If you are traveling or have changed networks, YouTube TV distinguishes your home area from your current playback area. On a TV or streaming device, open the profile icon, choose Location → Current Playback Area, then use a mobile device to visit tv.youtube.com/verify, allow location access, and complete verification.
When to contact support
If the failure persists, record the device make and model, operating-system and app/browser versions, whether audio plays, whether live TV, recordings, or both are affected, whether another network changes the result, and the time and local time zone. Include a screenshot or error code if available.
- Contact the TV or streaming-device manufacturer if that device has playback problems in multiple apps or fails after its firmware and connections are checked.
- Contact YouTube TV support if only YouTube TV fails across multiple supported devices, or if account/location symptoms remain after verification. Start at YouTube TV Help.
- Contact your internet provider if multiple devices and services fail on the same connection, particularly after testing a different network.
A replacement streamer may be practical only after confirming the existing device is unsupported, obsolete, or failing across multiple apps. First try the free compatibility, DRM, restart, update, HDMI, and cross-device checks; new hardware will not fix a bad TV input, unstable Wi-Fi, or an account issue.
