On Snapchat, Pending usually means your Snap or Chat has not been delivered normally. The most common reason is that the other person has not accepted your friend request or added you back. It can also relate to changed friend or contact settings, an account change, or an expired message. Pending alone does not prove that you were blocked, and it does not mean the person has read or ignored your message.
What the gray Pending status means
Snapchat uses separate statuses for sending, delivery, and viewing. Delivered means the recipient’s account received the Snap or Chat; Opened or Viewed means they opened it. Pending means normal delivery has not happened. Snapchat’s icon guide says a gray pending icon may appear when someone has not accepted your friend request, and notes that a pending Snap or Chat may have expired.
The exact icon’s color or shape can vary with the message type and app version. The key distinction is delivery: pending is not simply another way of saying “unread.”
The most common reason: they have not added you back
Snapchat friendships are two-way: both people add each other. If you add someone but they have not added you back, your message may remain pending because the friend connection needed for normal delivery is not in place. For example, you add Alex, send a Chat, and see Pending rather than Delivered. That is consistent with Alex not having accepted or returned the add; it is not proof of why they have not done so.

Contact settings matter too. Ordinary accounts can generally choose Friends or Friends and Contacts under Contact Me; the old Everyone option is not generally available except for Creator and business accounts. If a person limits contact to Friends, a non-friend may not be able to reach them normally. Menu availability can vary by account and app rollout.
Other reasons a Snap or Chat may stay pending
- The person removed you. If you were previously friends and the status changed, removal is one possibility. Snapchat says removal takes someone off the friend list, but whether that person can still Snap or Chat depends on privacy settings. A retained old conversation does not prove you are still mutual friends. See Snapchat’s removal guidance.
- Their contact settings restrict you. Friend status and contact permissions can affect whether a message reaches someone. Similar symptoms do not identify which setting is in use.
- You may have been blocked. Blocking prevents direct Snaps and Chats, and the blocked account is removed from areas such as Search results and the Friends Feed for the person who blocked it. But Snapchat does not say that every pending message means a block. A profile that vanishes can also reflect account deletion or other account changes. - The account changed or was deleted. An account that has been deleted may remain visible temporarily until the app session is refreshed. A missing profile is a clue, not a definitive diagnosis.
- The message expired. Snapchat says pending Snaps or Chats may expire, but its support documentation does not give one universal pending duration for every message and situation.
- The app or connection is out of sync. A network or app issue can cause stale displays or interfere with account actions. Snapchat does not say that every connection problem specifically produces Pending, so treat this as a troubleshooting possibility rather than the default explanation.
Does Pending mean you were blocked or unfriended?
No—not by itself. Snapchat does not show the sender a definitive reason for every pending status. The context can make one explanation more likely, but the status is not a reliable block or removal detector.

Snapchat says blocked users are not notified. If someone disappears from Search or your conversation list, that can make blocking more plausible, but it is still not conclusive from your side. Do not rely on Snap Score visibility or third-party “block checker” sites as proof; they are not official diagnostics and may pose privacy or account-security risks.

Do not assume they received or read it. If the message is pending because the recipient has not added you or limits contact to Friends, normal delivery has not occurred. Snapchat says that people who allow contact only from Friends may not see Snaps from non-friends; they may instead receive a notification that the sender added them. If they add the sender back, the Snap may become visible or deliverable. Snapchat does not promise that every previously pending message will automatically deliver in every case, so check the conversation after the friend connection changes.

If you just added the person
- Open their profile and check whether the add or friend status still appears incomplete.
- Give them time to accept or add you back; the pending label cannot tell you whether they have seen the request.
- Avoid repeatedly sending the same Snap or Chat. Check the conversation again if the friend connection changes.
If you used to be friends
Consider removal, changed privacy settings, a stale conversation, or an account change. A pending label cannot tell you which occurred. Public content may remain visible even when private friend access has changed. If the profile appears incorrectly or an account seems to have been deleted, refreshing the session may help clarify what the app is showing.
If you suspect an app or connection problem
- Check that the username is correct.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Update Snapchat from the iOS App Store or Google Play.
- Fully close and reopen the app, then restart your phone.
- If an account appears incorrectly or a deleted account remains visible, log out and back in.
- If the problem persists, report it in Snapchat: Profile → Settings → App & Privacy → Support & Safety → Bugs and Suggestions → Report a Bug. Menu wording may vary by app version or account.

Pending on a Spotlight comment means something different
If the label appears beside a comment you left on Spotlight, it may mean the creator has not approved it yet. Snapchat says the comment remains Pending while awaiting creator approval; if approved, the pending label disappears and the comment becomes publicly visible. That moderation status is separate from a pending Snap or Chat.
