Crave can buffer because the connection is unstable, the app or playback device is having trouble, a particular title is affected, or Crave’s service is experiencing a problem. The quickest way to find the cause is to compare playback across titles, devices and networks before buying hardware or changing your subscription.
“CraveTV” is still a common name for the service, but Bell Media currently calls it Crave. Its Canadian service is available through the web and a range of mobile, TV and streaming platforms; exact device support can vary. Bell Media’s Crave overview describes its current platform availability.
First, identify what kind of playback problem you have
Buffering is a pause while the player waits for more video data. Other symptoms can point to a different fault, so note what you see before troubleshooting.
- Playback pauses and a loading indicator appears: the player is not receiving usable video data fast or steadily enough to continue.
- The picture gets blurry but keeps playing: the stream may be reducing quality to cope with the connection or playback conditions.
- The picture freezes: the app, device or video renderer may have stopped responding.
- Audio continues but the screen is black or stuck: suspect video decoding, rendering, the app or device rather than ordinary buffering.
- The app crashes or returns to a menu: investigate the app, device software, memory or storage.
- You see a sign-in, entitlement, compatibility or geographic error: that is an access problem, not ordinary buffering. Follow the relevant checks below rather than treating it as a speed issue.
Use the symptom pattern to choose your next test
Change one thing at a time. These comparisons help distinguish a problem that follows a title, device or network from one that may affect Crave more broadly.

| What you notice | What it suggests | Best next test |
|---|---|---|
| Other streaming services also buffer on the same device | A problem with the home network, Wi-Fi or internet provider is more likely. | Pause other network activity, then test near the router or over Ethernet if available. |
| Only Crave buffers on one device | The Crave app, device software, compatibility, title delivery or Crave’s service path may be involved; this does not by itself prove the internet provider is at fault. | Try Crave on a second device and play another title on the first. |
| Crave buffers on several devices at home | The shared network, account or a Crave-side problem is more plausible. | Briefly test on a different network, such as cellular data, and check whether household members see the same issue. |
| Only one show, episode or movie buffers | A title-specific or playback-session problem is possible. | Try another title, then note whether the affected one fails again at the same point. |
| Crave works on a phone but not on the TV | The TV app, TV software, connection to the router, casting route or device support may be the difference. | Test the TV’s Crave app directly, without casting, and check device support. |
| Crave works on a phone but buffers when casting | The casting route adds another device and network step that could be involved. | Compare playback on the phone itself with direct playback on the receiving device. |
| Buffering follows an advertisement or recurs at the same timestamp | A player transition, ad-insertion or title-specific fault is possible; this pattern does not prove slow home internet. | Try another title and record the exact point where playback falters. |
| A geographic error appears | A VPN, proxy, network location or access restriction may be involved. | Turn off a VPN or proxy and test from a regular Canadian connection. |
Run a short, controlled playback test
Use the same device and network where the problem occurs. If a step changes the result, you have narrowed down the likely cause.
- Replay the affected title and note whether it fails at the beginning, intermittently, after an ad or at a particular timestamp.
- Play a different Crave title on the same device. If that works, focus on the original title or playback session.
- Try Crave on a second device on the same network. If only one device fails, focus on its app, software or connection.
- Try another streaming service on the original device. If it also buffers, investigate the device’s network path rather than Crave alone.
- Test a different connection, if practical: Ethernet, Wi-Fi closer to the router, or a brief cellular hotspot test. A hotspot can use mobile data, so it is best used only for comparison.
- Record the result before making several changes at once. Note the title, device, connection type and any error message.
Check connection stability, not just speed
A speed test is a short snapshot. It may not reveal intermittent Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss or other instability during playback. The relevant connection is the route from the router to the device playing Crave, not just the internet speed advertised for the home.
- Run any connection test on the affected playback device, in the room where the problem occurs.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, video calls and other streams while testing.
- Move the TV or streaming device closer to the router, or test Ethernet if you can. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, focus on Wi-Fi coverage or interference.
- Restart the modem and router if multiple devices or services are affected. A router restart will not resolve a title-specific or Crave-only problem by itself.
- Try another network briefly if available. If Crave works there but repeatedly fails on the home connection, ask your internet provider to investigate the connection rather than assuming the subscription speed is the only issue.
Bell says Crave playback quality depends on the subscription plan, source resolution, internet connection and playback device, but its current support page does not give one universal minimum speed for Crave. Bell’s subscription support information is the current reference for that statement; do not treat an old speed figure from historical CraveTV material as a current requirement.

Refresh the app and playback device
If the issue appears isolated to one device, try the least disruptive fixes first. Menu names differ by device, so use its own app and software settings.
- Force-close Crave, then reopen it. This clears a stuck app session without changing your account.
- Restart the playback device, not just the TV screen. If you use a streaming stick, console or receiver, restart that device as well.
- Sign out and back in if playback still fails and you can sign in again. Keep your account credentials available before doing this.
- Update Crave and the device software using the platform’s app store and system-update settings.
- Clear the app cache or data only if the device offers that control and you understand that clearing data may require signing in again.
- Uninstall and reinstall Crave if the problem remains limited to that device.
For web playback, try an up-to-date supported browser in a private window with extensions disabled. Privacy tools, blocked cookies or content blockers can interfere with playback. If the browser works while the app does not, it can serve as a temporary alternative while you report the app-specific issue.
Check device support before blaming the connection
Crave’s availability across phones, computers, TVs, streaming devices and consoles does not mean every model or operating-system version is supported. Check the live Crave device-support page for the exact model; support can change over time. An older or unsupported TV app may fail to load, crash or play poorly even when the internet connection is adequate, although the symptom alone does not establish that compatibility is the cause.

Bell separately identifies access through its Fibe TV receivers and the standalone Crave app. It says Crave is available on Bell Fibe TV VIP7802 and Bell Streamer devices, and that Crave stopped being supported on Bell Legacy Receivers on August 1, 2025. If you use a Bell receiver, check Bell’s current Crave and Fibe TV support information rather than assuming every older receiver supports the app.
Separate casting problems from direct playback
Casting involves the device running Crave, the home Wi-Fi network, the receiving TV or streaming device, and the app’s casting function. That gives you more than one possible failure point, but casting is not inherently unreliable.
- If Crave plays smoothly on your phone but buffers when cast, test the Crave app directly on the TV or receiving device.
- If both the phone and direct TV playback buffer, investigate the network, device or service instead of focusing only on casting.
- If casting fails while other playback works, restart both devices and the router, then test again before changing other settings.
Rule out VPNs, proxies and filtered networks
Crave is a Canadian service. Bell Media describes it as available to Canadians, and historical CraveTV help material says VPN or proxy use can prevent playback. Turn off a VPN or proxy temporarily and test through a regular Canadian connection. Do not try to bypass geographic restrictions by switching VPN locations.

Corporate, school, hotel and public Wi-Fi can also filter or restrict traffic. If Crave fails only on one of those networks, test on a private connection. Parental controls, DNS filtering, ad blocking or network-security software are other possible factors to check. If you are physically in Canada but receive a geographic error on a normal connection, contact Crave or your internet provider rather than repeatedly changing VPN settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buffering, picture quality and subscription plans are different issues
A lower resolution, advertisements or unavailable content may relate to plan features or a title’s source. Buffering means playback is not continuing smoothly; changing plans is not a substitute for a stable connection, working app or compatible device. Bell says the plan is one factor in playback quality, but the available support information does not establish that upgrading a plan fixes ordinary buffering.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Content or feature unavailable: check the account and plan entitlement.
- Picture quality is lower than expected: consider the plan, source resolution, connection and device.
- Playback repeatedly pauses to load: troubleshoot the network, app, device, title or service path.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Contact Crave when the issue persists after basic app and device checks, particularly if it is Crave-specific, a compatible device still cannot play video, an error code appears, or the same title fails repeatedly at the same point. Bell directs app installation, website or login access, compatibility, browser, operating-system and video-playback problems to Crave Support. Use the Crave Support page or Crave contact page.

Before contacting support, gather:
- Your country and province or territory.
- The device make and model, operating-system version, and Crave app or browser used.
- The title and episode, approximate failure timestamp, and exact error message or code.
- Whether other Crave titles, devices, streaming services and networks work.
- Whether you tested on Wi-Fi, Ethernet or cellular data.
- Your account email or billing-provider relationship if requested. Do not send your password.
If several streaming services fail across multiple devices, contact your internet provider with the test results. If other services work and Crave fails across devices or networks, Crave Support is the more useful first contact. Similar reports from other viewers may be a clue, but they do not by themselves establish the cause or scope of an outage.
Before buying a device or changing your plan
Do not buy a streaming stick or upgrade your subscription until testing shows that the existing device is unsupported or failing, or that the plan lacks a feature you actually need. New hardware may help with an obsolete TV app, but it cannot fix an account issue, VPN restriction, Crave-side problem or unreliable home connection. Consider an internet-plan change only when multiple services or devices point to a broader connection problem.
