Netflix’s announced changes are not one simultaneous app update—and the original “three new features” framing actually covers four initiatives: live voting, TV party games, immersive homepage experiences and a redesigned Kids interface. The most concrete change is already live: Netflix launched voting for selected live events on January 20, 2026. The other features have different rollouts and may depend on your device and location.

Netflix CTO Elizabeth Stone discussed the product direction at TechCrunch Disrupt on October 28, 2025. The original coverage grouped the changes into three broad initiatives—live interactivity, immersive experiences and living-room games—then described the Kids homepage redesign separately. Calling them “three features” is therefore imprecise, and calling them one forthcoming update is now outdated.
1. Live voting: the change that has launched
Netflix first tested live voting on Dinner Time Live with David Chang in August 2025. It later brought voting to the live Star Search reboot, and announced its global launch for selected live events on January 20, 2026. “Global” does not mean every Netflix live program supports it: voting is event-specific. Depending on the event, viewers may choose from a multiple-choice menu or rate a performance on a five-star scale. The event determines what the vote does; a vote should not be assumed to decide the entire outcome in every program. Netflix says each profile gets one vote, so that is not necessarily the same as one vote per person in a household.

How to vote
- On a TV or supported streaming device: Open the eligible live event, wait for the voting prompt, use the remote to choose an option or rating, and submit before the timer ends.
- On a phone or tablet: Watch the eligible event in the Netflix mobile app, tap the on-screen voting prompt, make your selection and submit within the voting window.
Netflix says voting is not available in a web browser. It is also time-limited: viewers who join after the prompt closes, watch a replay or rewind to a point after the window may not be able to vote. Ordinary on-demand films and episodes do not become interactive simply because Netflix offers voting for some live events.
If the prompt is missing: Check that the program is an eligible live event and that you are watching live, not a replay. Use the Netflix app on a TV or streaming device, or the mobile app, rather than a browser. Join before the voting timer expires. If you still do not see it, updating Netflix and your device software is a sensible check—but availability remains event- and device-dependent.

2. TV party games use phones as controllers
Netflix is also extending its games beyond the familiar mobile-game model. In the announced living-room format, a compatible TV displays the game and players use phones as controllers. It is intended for local play with friends or family, rather than cloud gaming in general: the terms are related, but they do not describe the same experience.

Boggle was the early example Stone cited. Netflix’s 2026 investor materials later named Boggle Party, Pictionary: Game Night, LEGO Party!, Tetris Time Warp and Party Crasher: Fool Your Friends. Netflix described the experience as requiring no separate game controller or extra gaming subscription. A Netflix membership and compatible equipment are still needed; that statement does not establish that every plan, TV, streaming stick, phone or country supports every game. The available announcements do not establish a complete compatibility matrix: they do not settle whether every smart TV or TV-connected device works, which regions have each game, whether both iPhone and Android are supported in every case, whether a phone must be on the same Wi-Fi network, or how players join a particular session. Check the game’s instructions and your Netflix app before planning around a specific setup. Do not assume every title in Netflix’s mobile-games catalogue can be played on a TV.
3. Immersive homepage experiences are about browsing
Netflix described animated artwork and dynamic visual effects designed to make browsing feel more responsive. This is an interface and promotion change, not a new streaming format, picture-quality upgrade or playback feature. The Halloween Collection was the first immersive experience Netflix announced as launched; a Holiday Collection was planned for December 2025. Netflix also discussed possible title-specific treatments, including a Bridgerton-themed example.

Those examples do not establish that every subscriber has a permanently animated homepage or that every show receives a bespoke experience. Netflix did not publish a complete technical specification or universal rollout timetable in the announcement. Seasonal collections and title promotions may differ by account or device, and the added motion may feel busier or distracting to some viewers.
4. The Kids change is a navigation redesign
The reported Kids homepage redesign adds a navigation bar linking to content children have watched and saved, with the aim of making familiar titles easier to find. It is an interface change, not evidence of a new subscription tier, a new children’s catalogue or a parental-controls overhaul. Parental controls and Netflix’s separate children’s gaming initiatives are distinct matters; a redesigned profile should not be treated as a substitute for reviewing account settings.

What you need—and what is not confirmed
- For voting: An eligible live event, a supported Netflix viewing device or the Netflix mobile app, and access before the event’s voting window closes. Browser voting is excluded.
- For TV games: A Netflix membership, a compatible TV or streaming setup, and phones to act as controllers. The announced phone-controller concept does not by itself confirm a universal device or regional rollout.
- For homepage and Kids changes: A Netflix profile and a supported version of the service, with availability potentially varying across devices and accounts.
The available evidence does not establish which current Netflix plans include every feature, so it would be premature to say a particular tier is required—or that every subscriber can use all of them. Netflix’s games help page and supported-devices information are useful starting points for checking your setup; confirm the particular game or live event as well.
Why Netflix is making these changes
Together, the initiatives point toward a less passive version of streaming: live programming can invite participation, phones can turn into casual game controllers, and the home screen can promote collections with more visual movement. That strategy does not make the changes interchangeable. Voting is a time-sensitive live feature; party games are a shared local activity; and homepage effects and Kids navigation are discovery tools.
