Spotify did raise Canadian Premium prices, but “$1 more” applies only to Premium Individual. Individual is now $13.99 CAD per month, Duo is $19.99, Family is $23.99, and Student remains $6.39. Existing subscribers receive notice and a two-month grace period; the first higher charge depends on the account’s billing date and payment channel.

When will the higher price hit your account?
- New subscribers: The new rates are already shown on Spotify’s Canadian signup page.
- Existing subscribers: Spotify says it emails affected customers and gives them two months before the new rate applies. Canadian reports identified July 2026 billing cycles for many customers, but there is no single universal charge date.
- Trial users: Spotify says a trial customer receives two months at the original price after the trial ends, then moves to the new rate.
- Apple- or Google-billed accounts: The billing date, taxes and cancellation controls can differ from a subscription paid directly to Spotify.
Open your Spotify account’s subscription page to see the next billing date and the price attached to your account. Cancel before that date if you do not want another renewal. Gift cards can still be redeemed, but Spotify says they apply only to Premium Individual.

What Premium includes
Spotify’s Canadian Premium page lists ad-free listening, offline downloads, on-demand playback, lossless audio, real-time listening with friends and queue controls. Individual, Duo and Family also include 15 hours of audiobook listening each month for the relevant account or plan manager. Unused audiobook hours expire monthly rather than rolling over; Spotify says its audiobook catalogue exceeds 700,000 titles.
Student is the important exception: it does not include the audiobook allowance. Student eligibility is limited to verified students aged 18 or older at eligible higher-education institutions, for up to four years subject to verification and availability. When eligibility ends, Spotify may move the account to Individual pricing unless the subscriber changes plans.
Duo covers two people who live at the same address. Family supports up to six accounts, but members must satisfy Spotify’s household requirements. It is not a licence to share with friends at different addresses.

Is the price increase worth absorbing?
One listener
Individual now costs $13.99 per month before tax. Keep it if Spotify’s playlists, recommendations, social listening and device support are valuable enough to justify $12 more per year. A music-only listener who does not use audiobooks should also check whether an account-specific lower-cost Basic option appears in Spotify’s plan selector. Availability and price are not universal, so do not assume Basic is offered to every Canadian account.
Two-person household
Duo is about $10 per eligible member at full use, versus $27.98 for two Individual subscriptions. It is worthwhile only when both people reside at the same address.
Three to six eligible household members
Family costs about $4 per person with six members, $6 with four, and $12 with two. Even after the increase, it is cheaper than separate Individual plans when enough eligible household members use it. Compare the household’s total bill, not just the account manager’s charge, and remember that removing members may leave them responsible for their own subscriptions.

Students and audiobook users
At $6.39, Student is unchanged and remains the cheapest official Premium tier, but it has verification and duration limits. For audiobook-heavy users, the 15-hour allowance on Individual, Duo and Family may offset some of the increase; music-only users may place little value on it.

Spotify Free keeps saved music, playlists and podcasts but adds advertising and removes key Premium benefits such as downloads, uninterrupted listening and unrestricted playback. It is the simplest no-bill option.
Apple Music may suit Apple-device households and includes lossless and Spatial Audio features. Apple’s Canadian page currently shows plan cards of $11.99 Individual, $19.99 Family and $5.99 Student, but the same page still contains an older $10.99 Individual reference. Verify the live checkout price before comparing.

YouTube Music or YouTube Premium is more compelling if you also want ad-free YouTube video, background playback and music videos. The Canadian App Store listing shows $14.99 for YouTube Music, $16.99 for YouTube Premium, $22.99 for Music Family and $29.99 for Premium Family; direct-web prices can differ.
Amazon Music can be attractive to Prime members because some music access is included with Prime. The available Canadian listing confirms free streaming, Prime access and Music Unlimited, but does not establish a reliable current Canadian standalone price.
Tidal targets listeners who prioritize high-quality audio. Tidal says its latest pricing change took effect on the first billing date on or after August 3, 2026, so older comparison tables may be stale; check its current Canadian pricing page.

Before switching, compare catalogue availability, playlist-transfer tools, family residence rules, audio requirements, podcasts and audiobooks, and whether the subscription is billed through an app store. Do not compare temporary introductory offers with recurring prices.

Spotify’s public explanation cites changing market conditions, continued innovation, and investment in audio content and discovery. It does not provide a Canada-specific cost breakdown. Spotify’s investor filing describes local pricing as influenced by factors such as purchasing power, general cost levels and willingness to pay. There is no evidence that this particular increase directly funds artists, Canadian content or lossless audio.
How to decide
- Check your account page for the exact new price, tax and next billing date.
- Count eligible household members who actually use Premium.
- Value audiobooks separately from music features.
- Look for an account-specific Basic offer before cancelling.
- If switching, confirm the replacement service’s ongoing Canadian price and transfer your playlists before renewal.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Spotify’s Canadian increase is not a flat $1 hike. Individual rose by $1, Duo by $2.10 and Family by $3, while Student stayed at $6.39. The right response depends on your billing date, household eligibility and whether Spotify’s playlists, social features or audiobook allowance are worth the higher recurring cost.
