If YouTube TV restarts a show, jumps backward, or returns to live playback, first check whether it happens with live TV, a DVR recording, or on-demand video—and whether it follows one program or one device. Those distinctions point to different causes: buffering, a paused-live limit, a recording or feed problem, or an app, device, or network fault. There is no single confirmed fix for every restart.
Identify what is happening
| What you see | Where to start |
|---|---|
| A live channel jumps back after buffering or reconnecting | Check the network, device, channel feed, and Broadcast Delay setting. |
| A show starts from the beginning after a short pause | Check the app’s resume state and whether you opened a DVR or on-demand version. |
| A recording jumps backward at the same timestamp each time | Test another recording and another device; the recording or feed may be affected. |
| Playback returns to live after a long pause | The live program may have ended or the available pause window may have expired. |
| Only one channel or program is affected | Look for a channel, feed, or recording-specific problem before resetting your network. |
| Every channel fails on one TV, but works elsewhere | Focus on that TV or player, its app and system software, network connection, and HDMI/HDR setup. |
| Playback fails across devices and content types | Check for a service or account issue and contact YouTube TV support if it persists. |
“Buffering,” “jumping backward,” “restarting,” and “losing a resume point” are different symptoms. Note which one occurs, and whether it affects live TV, DVR, or on-demand playback, before changing settings.
Try the least disruptive checks first
- Compare content. Try another live channel, a different DVR recording, and an on-demand title. If one item alone fails, avoid assuming your whole account or internet connection is at fault.
- Compare devices. Play the same program on a phone, computer, or another TV. If it works there, the original device or its connection is a stronger suspect.
- Restart the app and device. Exit YouTube TV, power off the streaming device or TV, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on. Google recommends this power-cycle step in its YouTube TV playback troubleshooting guide.
- Restart the router. Unplug it, wait 30 seconds, and reconnect it. This can help with local connection trouble, but is unlikely to repair one defective recording or one troubled channel feed.
- Update software. Install available system updates for the TV or player and update the YouTube TV app.
- Test the connection. If possible, temporarily use Ethernet. Otherwise compare Wi-Fi bands, reduce competing network use, and try the same program on a phone using cellular data. Fast service on paper does not rule out Wi-Fi interference or congestion.
- Reinstall YouTube TV if the problem remains. Reinstalling can clear an app-state problem, but it cannot repair a faulty cloud recording. On Roku, follow Roku’s app-removal and restart guidance before reinstalling.
Google’s guidance also recommends checking whether other apps have playback problems and whether location settings are accurate. Its troubleshooting page covers restart, updates, reinstalling, and device-specific checks.

If live TV jumps backward
Live TV is a changing stream, not a fixed file. If playback is interrupted or reconnects, the player may resume from buffered video rather than at the live edge. A long pause can also behave differently from pausing a DVR recording: the program may end while you are away, or the service or device may no longer retain the same pause point.

Adjust Broadcast Delay when the option is available
On a supported TV interface, open YouTube TV, select the three-dot More menu, then Broadcast Delay. Choose:
- Default: Provides more buffer and is the better choice when minimizing interruptions matters more than watching as close to live as possible.
- Decrease: Reduces the live delay, which may matter for avoiding spoilers, but makes interruptions more likely.
So if playback keeps stalling or jumping, try Default, not Decrease. This setting is a trade-off, not a guaranteed cure. See Google’s explanation of Broadcast Delay.

Roku’s documentation says its Live TV Pause feature can support up to 90 minutes for eligible content, but availability and behavior vary by provider or app. Roku notes that a viewer may lose the position when a program ends or a pause window expires. That is guidance about Roku Live TV Pause generally—not a promise that every YouTube TV pause behaves the same way. A restart after a brief pause is a different issue from losing your place after an extended one. See Roku’s Live TV Pause guidance.
If a DVR recording restarts or resumes at the wrong point
DVR playback should behave more like a recording than a live stream, but the playback position can still be lost or become confusing. First confirm that you selected the DVR recording, not an on-demand version of the same program. Different versions can have different seek and resume behavior.

- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
- Reopen the title and look for the available resume or start-over choice.
- Try another episode or recording from the same series.
- Play the affected recording on a phone, browser, or another TV.
- Note whether it always jumps at the same timestamp, or whether the point varies between attempts.
A failed or incomplete recording, a changing live-event duration or program boundary, a feed interruption, or a DVR playback issue are all possible explanations. If one recording fails repeatedly at one exact point while other content plays normally, report that title and timestamp rather than repeatedly resetting your router.
Roku-specific checks
Roku TVs and external Roku players are not interchangeable for troubleshooting: a problem limited to one model or software combination does not establish that Roku devices generally cause YouTube TV restarts. Try these checks in order:

- Restart the Roku and install available Roku system updates.
- Update YouTube TV. If needed, remove and reinstall it, restarting the Roku after removing the app where applicable.
- If playback is choppy, test with HDR turned off in Roku’s display settings. Google specifically lists this as a possible Roku playback remedy; use it as a diagnostic test, since disabling HDR changes picture features.
- If you see an HDCP error, check the HDMI connection and the relevant display or HDMI settings. Google describes an HDMI Ultra HD Color adjustment for certain HDCP errors; follow the instructions for your TV and setup.
- Try the same program on another device. If it works there, the Roku, its software, or its local connection is more likely than the recording itself.
Menu labels vary by Roku model and OS version. Consult Roku’s system restart guidance and its playback troubleshooting page for device-specific directions. Google also advises checking other apps and manufacturer-related issues. An external player can be a useful comparison test; replacing a TV or buying a player should not be the first step.

- Exit or force-close YouTube TV, then restart the device.
- Update its operating system and the YouTube TV app.
- Sign out and back in, then reinstall the app if that platform supports it.
- Compare playback in a browser or on a phone.
- If the problem is choppy, temporarily disable unusual audio or video processing, such as surround-sound processing or frame-rate matching, as a test. Restore the setting if it makes no difference.
If other streaming apps also fail on the same device, investigate the device or network. If YouTube TV alone fails there, but works elsewhere, the app/device combination is a more plausible lead. YouTube TV lists supported models and platforms on its device compatibility page; exact model and software eligibility can change.
Use a two-device, two-content test to narrow it down
| Test result | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| The same title fails on multiple devices | A title, feed, recording, account, or service problem is more plausible than a single-device fault. |
| Many titles fail on one device | Check that device, its app or firmware, local network, and any HDMI/HDR settings. |
| Only one channel fails | Test another show on that channel; a channel feed or delivery problem may be involved. |
| DVR fails but on-demand works | Focus on the recording or DVR playback path and confirm which version you opened. |
| Live fails but recordings work | Focus on live delivery, buffering, pause behavior, or Broadcast Delay. |
| All content fails across devices | Check YouTube TV’s Help Center or support channels for a service interruption, then investigate account or broader service issues. |
For a location check, open your profile image in YouTube TV and select Location to review Home Area and Current playback location. To update current playback location on a TV or streaming device, use a mobile device to visit tv.youtube.com/verify and allow location access. Location errors are more often relevant to local channels, travel, and availability than to a video jumping backward, so treat this as a secondary check.
When to contact YouTube TV support
Contact support if the issue persists after restart and update steps, affects multiple devices or unrelated channels, repeatedly occurs at the same timestamp in a recording, or began immediately after an app or device update. A reproducible failure during a live event is also worth reporting promptly.
Include the device brand and model, system version, YouTube TV app version if visible, whether the content was live/DVR/on-demand, the channel and program, the approximate jump timestamp, and whether the same content works on another device or over Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or cellular data. Screenshots or a short recording can help if available. Do not send account passwords, full addresses, or payment details.
Should you replace the TV or streaming device?
Only consider replacement after checking whether the issue follows the device. If the same account and content work on other devices, and updates, restart, app reinstall, and connection tests do not help, an older TV operating system or failing player becomes more plausible. A different supported streaming device can establish whether the built-in TV app is the weak point, but it is not a guaranteed fix for an account, feed, or recording problem. Check YouTube TV’s current supported-device list before buying.
