Yes—Max really did change its name back to HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery announced the reversal on May 14, 2025, rolled it out during summer 2025, and was using HBO Max across its U.S. support, pricing, and corporate materials by August 2026. For most subscribers, this is a branding change rather than a new service migration: existing accounts, profiles, plans, and viewing history should continue to work.
The short version
Max is now HBO Max again, but the service has not simply reverted to the narrower product that existed before 2023. The restored HBO Max name belongs to the broader streaming platform created during the Max era, with HBO programming alongside Warner Bros., DC, Max Originals, Discovery-related titles, documentaries, lifestyle programming, reality shows, and children’s content.

The name change does not by itself require subscribers to create a new account, change a plan, or resubscribe. However, app labels, icons, billing descriptions, and update timing can vary depending on the device or company handling the subscription.
Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement said the return of “HBO” was intended to emphasize the strength of the HBO brand and the quality of the programming driving the service.

From HBO Max to Max—and back again
- 2020: HBO Max launched as WarnerMedia’s premium streaming service.
- April 2023: Warner Bros. Discovery announced the Max brand, intended to represent a wider mix of HBO, Warner Bros., DC, Discovery, lifestyle, reality, documentary, and children’s programming. The company officially presented Max as a broader service rather than an HBO-only platform.
- May 14, 2025: Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Max would become HBO Max again during the summer.
- Summer 2025: The rebrand rolled out across the service.
- By August 2026: Current U.S. consumer support and pricing materials were using HBO Max as the active service name.
This is a change to the streaming platform’s brand. It is not the same thing as Warner Bros. Discovery’s separate corporate restructuring or post-separation naming plans.
Why did Warner Bros. Discovery reverse the decision?
The official explanation is straightforward: Warner Bros. Discovery believes HBO remains one of its most valuable entertainment brands and that putting HBO back in the service name better communicates the platform’s premium identity. The company described HBO Max as its premier global streaming platform and linked the name restoration to accelerating growth.
There are also reasonable strategic explanations, although they should be treated as analysis rather than documented internal findings:

- HBO communicates prestige quickly. The name has long been associated with high-profile scripted series, films, documentaries, and adult-oriented premium programming.
- “Max” is generic. On its own, the word does not immediately tell a potential subscriber what the service specializes in and can be confused with unrelated products and companies.
- The broader catalog did not necessarily require abandoning HBO. Warner Bros. Discovery may have decided that HBO’s brand recognition was more valuable than the simplicity of a standalone name.
- The name is a positioning tool. HBO Max can signal premium entertainment while still carrying the broader catalog introduced in 2023.
Warner Bros. Discovery has not publicly provided a detailed accounting of the marketing costs, consumer-recognition data, or internal research behind the reversal. The change alone does not prove that the Max name was a failure or that it caused a particular subscriber or financial outcome.
Is this the same as the old HBO Max?
Not exactly. It is the same name returning to a broader service.
The HBO Max brand used from 2020 to 2023 was primarily associated with HBO, Warner Bros., DC, and related entertainment libraries. When Warner Bros. Discovery launched Max in 2023, it explicitly expanded the positioning to include Discovery brands and categories such as food, home, reality, lifestyle, documentaries, and children’s programming.
The current HBO Max name does not mean that the service has reverted to the old catalog or removed everything added during the Max period. It is more accurate to describe the product as the broader Max-era platform operating under the HBO Max brand.

Individual titles can still vary by country, licensing agreement, subscription plan, and date. The name does not guarantee that every program once available on HBO Max has returned.
What existing subscribers need to do
Most subscribers should not need to take action solely because of the rename. Warner Bros. Discovery’s customer guidance said that accounts, profiles, settings, programming, plans, pricing, and the app experience would remain continuous during the transition.
- Open the app you already use.
- Install an available update through your device’s app store or platform.
- Sign in with your existing credentials.
- Do not create a second account just because the logo or app name changes.
- Check the subscription page to see who handles your billing.
- Do not cancel and resubscribe unless you have confirmed the effect with your billing provider.
Some devices may temporarily show a mixture of “Max” and “HBO Max” labels in menus, receipts, email messages, or subscription dashboards. An app may update automatically on one device but require a manual update on another.
Subscribers billed through Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, a cable company, an internet provider, a mobile carrier, or another partner may see different prices, app labels, promotional terms, and update schedules. If access or billing appears incorrect, contact the company listed as the subscription provider before opening a new subscription.
Will the content change?
The rebrand itself is not evidence of a major content reset. HBO programming remains central, but the service’s broader proposition remains important too. The Max launch included HBO titles alongside Warner Bros. films, DC content, Max Originals, and Discovery-related programming.
That means the return of “HBO” should not be read as a promise that Discovery content has disappeared—or that every title from the original HBO Max catalog is available again. Libraries change according to territory, rights agreements, plan, and release date. Check the catalog available in your country rather than relying on U.S. advertising or older lists of titles.

The following direct-billed prices were listed in HBO Max’s U.S. help materials in July and August 2026. Taxes may apply, and third-party providers may charge different rates.

HBO Max’s current U.S. plan guide describes annual plans as approximately 16% cheaper than paying monthly for 12 months. It also lists Basic With Ads at $5.49 per month for eligible students for up to 12 months.
Basic With Ads carries approximately six minutes of advertising per hour according to the service’s help center, although live-event advertising can differ. Ad-free plans may still show promotional trailers or messages for related products and services.
Standard and Premium are the plans identified in the current guide as supporting live sports, subject to the service’s sports offering and geographic restrictions. Premium adds 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos on eligible content, as well as four simultaneous streams and the larger download allowance.
Did the name change cause a price increase?
Not according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s explanation. The rebrand was not announced as a price change. U.S. prices did change separately: the company raised plan prices in October 2025 for new subscribers and on or after November 20, 2025 for existing subscribers. Its customer FAQ attributed that increase to continued investment in content, not specifically to restoring the HBO Max name.
This distinction matters when comparing an old bill with a current price. A higher charge may reflect a separate price adjustment, a promotional period ending, taxes, a third-party provider’s terms, or a change made by the subscriber—not necessarily the rename.

HBO Max is available through direct subscriptions and selected internet, mobile, television, app-store, and streaming-platform providers. The price, plan availability, cancellation process, and promotional terms can differ from direct billing.
The listed Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max bundle costs $19.99 per month with ads or $32.99 per month without ads, before applicable taxes. The bundle uses separate Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max apps. The listed bundle options do not include HBO Max Premium, and some add-ons or features may not be available.

The bundle can make sense for a household that already wants Disney+ and Hulu. It is a poor fit for someone who wants only HBO Max, needs Premium features, or prefers all programming in one app.
How to decide whether to keep HBO Max
The name alone is not a useful reason to stay or cancel. Consider:

- Whether you can tolerate advertising.
- Whether you need 4K, Dolby Atmos, offline downloads, or four simultaneous streams.
- Whether anyone in your household needs access at the same time.
- Whether live sports available in your territory matters to you.
- Whether HBO Max is already included through a television, internet, mobile, or bundle provider.
- Whether your preferred shows are currently available in your country.
Possible alternatives include Netflix for broad general entertainment, Disney+ for family and franchise programming, Hulu for general entertainment and current television in supported markets, Prime Video for its wider retail ecosystem, and Paramount+ for Paramount, CBS, sports, and franchise content. None is a direct replacement for HBO’s programming or Warner Bros.’ catalog.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Duplicate billing: Canceling a provider subscription and signing up directly without confirming who currently bills you.
- Duplicate accounts: Creating a new login because the service name or icon changed.
- Bad price comparisons: Comparing a direct-billed rate with an app-store or provider price without considering taxes, promotions, or legacy terms.
- Assuming all content returned: Treating the HBO Max name as proof that every old title is available.
- Assuming “no ads” means no promotional messages: The service may still promote related products or programming.
- Assuming bundles are identical: The Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max bundle uses separate apps and does not offer every HBO Max plan or add-on.
Does the rebrand apply everywhere?
Availability, pricing, content, sports rights, and launch timing vary by country. Warner Bros. Discovery’s corporate materials describe HBO Max as a global platform and document additional international launches, but a U.S. plan table should not be treated as a worldwide price list.
Readers outside the United States should check the HBO Max site and support pages for their market. The same name can cover different catalogs, plans, advertising rules, and partner arrangements in different countries.
Bottom line
Max has changed its name back to HBO Max, but this is not a simple rewind to the 2020–2023 service. Warner Bros. Discovery restored HBO to the name while retaining the broader streaming proposition built during the Max era.
