Paramount+ Error Code 1204 is a real playback error, but Paramount does not publicly define it as one specific fault. It can be caused by a temporary service problem, an app or device glitch, corrupted app data, network filtering, regional restrictions, or an issue affecting one title. The quickest approach is to check Paramount’s status page, restart the app and device, disable VPN or proxy services, and compare playback on another device or network.
What does Paramount+ Error Code 1204 mean?
Paramount’s current public support guidance treats streaming error codes as playback problems, but it does not provide a clear, standalone definition for Error 1204. That means the code does not reliably prove that your internet is too slow, your account is invalid, your device is unsupported, or Paramount+ is experiencing a service outage.
The most accurate description is: Error 1204 is an unidentified Paramount+ playback or connection failure. Depending on where the failure occurs, possible causes include:
- A Paramount+ service or content-delivery problem
- A temporary app or device software glitch
- Stale login data or corrupted app cache
- Router, DNS, ISP, or network-filtering problems
- A VPN, proxy, Smart DNS, private DNS, or ad-blocking service
- A regional availability or device-platform issue
- A problem with one particular movie, episode, or live event
Some third-party websites assign a precise meaning to code 1204, describing it variously as a connectivity, authentication, or player error. Those explanations conflict and are not supported by a publicly accessible Paramount definition. Avoid treating any one of them as authoritative.

Fix Error 1204 in the shortest safe order
1. Try another title
Exit the failed program and start a different movie or episode. If only one title produces 1204, the problem may involve that title, its regional rights, a live-event entitlement, or a temporary content-delivery failure. There is no reason to factory-reset your TV for a single-title problem.
2. Force-close Paramount+
Fully quit the app rather than simply pressing the Home button. Reopen Paramount+ and try playback again. On phones and tablets, force-quitting refreshes the app session.

Power the TV, streaming stick, or set-top box off and back on. If it has a detachable power cable, unplug it briefly and reconnect it. Do not start with a factory reset: that can remove accounts, settings, and installed apps without addressing a Paramount-side problem.
4. Restart the modem and router
Paramount recommends the following sequence:
- Unplug the router.
- If you have a separate modem, unplug the modem first.
- Wait approximately 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first, then the router.
- Wait several minutes for the connection to return.
- Open Paramount+ and test playback.
A restart can clear a temporary network, DNS, or session problem, but it cannot repair an outage on Paramount’s servers.

5. Temporarily disable traffic-filtering services
Turn off any VPN, proxy, Smart DNS service, private DNS configuration, network-level ad blocker, or security tool that filters streaming domains. Paramount says VPNs and proxies that reroute traffic outside the user’s current region may be blocked. Switching between VPN servers is therefore not a supported fix.
6. Update or reinstall the app
Install any available Paramount+ app update and check for a system or firmware update for the TV or streaming device. If the error remains, remove and reinstall Paramount+. Reinstalling the app normally removes local app data, not your Paramount+ subscription, but you may need to sign in again.
7. Test another device or network
Try Paramount+ in a browser, on a phone, or on another television. If possible, compare home Wi-Fi with cellular data or a phone hotspot. Use a hotspot only as a diagnostic test, not as a permanent streaming solution.
Check whether Paramount+ is down
Before repeating resets, check the official Paramount+ status page. Its live status display requires JavaScript, so open it directly in a current browser.
Then compare the failure across:
- One title versus every title
- One device versus multiple devices
- Home Wi-Fi versus mobile data
- The Paramount+ app versus the web player
These comparisons are more useful than simply checking whether another streaming service works. Netflix or another app can function normally while Paramount’s service, app integration, account session, or content-delivery path is failing.

Device-specific fixes
Vizio TV
Historical user reports from August 31, 2023 described Error 1204 on Vizio TVs while Paramount+ continued working on phones or computers. That suggests that at least some incidents were platform- or app-specific, but it does not prove that every current 1204 error is a Vizio problem.

- Exit Paramount+ and relaunch it.
- Restart the Vizio TV.
- Check for a Paramount+ app update.
- Check for a Vizio system or firmware update.
- Remove and reinstall Paramount+ if your model allows it.
- Test the same account on a phone or computer.
- Test the TV briefly through a phone hotspot.
If other devices work but the Vizio continues to show 1204, contact both Paramount and Vizio rather than repeatedly restarting your router. The historical reports are documented by SiteDown, which is anecdotal evidence rather than an official Paramount incident report.
Roku
Use the following Roku paths from Paramount’s troubleshooting guidance:
- Roku player restart: Settings > System > System Restart
- Roku TV restart: Settings > System > Power > System Restart
- System update: Settings > System > System Update > Check Now
- Network test: Home > Settings > Network > Check Connection
If that does not help, remove the Paramount+ channel and reinstall it.
Amazon Fire TV
Clear the Paramount+ app cache using:
Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > Paramount+ > Force Stop > Clear Cache

Relaunch the app. If 1204 continues, delete and reinstall Paramount+.
Apple TV, Android TV, Google TV, and other connected devices
Force-quit Paramount+, restart the device, check for app and system updates, and reinstall the app if necessary. Also restart the modem and router and confirm that the device is being used in a region where Paramount+ is available. Menu names vary by model and operating-system version.
iPhone, iPad, and Android
- Force-quit Paramount+ and reopen it.
- Test Wi-Fi and cellular data separately.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
- Update or reinstall Paramount+.
- Temporarily disable VPN, proxy, private DNS, and filtering apps.
Desktop browser
Use a current supported browser. Paramount recommends clearing cache, cookies, and browsing history, then reloading the page and restarting the browser. Try Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge, and temporarily disable ad-blocking extensions if they interfere with Paramount URLs.
A useful diagnosis is:
- Browser works, TV app fails: the issue is probably device- or app-specific.
- No device works on the same home network: investigate the service, account, region, router, DNS, or filtering.
- Mobile data works but Wi-Fi fails: investigate the router, DNS, ISP filtering, or network security software.
Could your account or subscription cause Error 1204?
It is possible, but Paramount does not publicly identify 1204 as a definitive authentication error. Sign out and sign back in, confirm that the subscription is active, and check whether the account works at the Paramount+ website.

Make sure you are using the correct Paramount account, particularly if the subscription was purchased through Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku, Walmart, T-Mobile, or another partner. Billing management and technical support may depend on the provider. Do not cancel and resubscribe merely to clear Error 1204.

What to send Paramount support
If the basic steps fail, record:
- The exact error text and number
- Device make and model
- Device operating-system or firmware version
- Paramount+ app version, if visible
- The title that failed
- Whether every title fails
- Whether another device works
- Whether Wi-Fi and cellular data behave differently
- Your approximate date and time of the failure
- Your country or region
- Whether a VPN, proxy, ad blocker, or private DNS was active
Use the official Paramount+ Help Center or the support routes listed on Paramount’s contact page. Do not call phone numbers published by unofficial troubleshooting pages or provide payment details to third-party “Paramount support” services.
Advice to avoid
- Do not install registry cleaners or paid “PC repair” utilities for this streaming error.
- Do not assume that changing DNS will always fix 1204.
- Do not use a VPN to bypass regional restrictions.
- Do not factory-reset the TV before testing another device and checking service status.
- Do not treat old Vizio reports as proof of the cause of every current 1204 incident.
Paramount’s own troubleshooting focuses on the app, browser, device, network, region, and playback environment—not Windows registry repair.

Is Paramount+ Error 1204 caused by slow internet?
Not necessarily. Slow or unstable internet is one possibility, but Error 1204 can also involve the app, device, network filtering, region, a specific title, or Paramount’s service. Test another device and compare Wi-Fi with cellular data before drawing a conclusion.

Historical reports from August 31, 2023 showed a Vizio-heavy incident in which Paramount+ worked on other devices. That supports the possibility of a platform-specific problem during some incidents, but it does not establish that Vizio is always the cause.
Should I change my DNS or use a VPN?
Do not use a VPN as a fix; Paramount says VPNs and proxies may be blocked. DNS changes are not guaranteed to solve 1204. First disable VPNs, proxies, Smart DNS, private DNS, and filtering services, then test the connection again.
Will reinstalling Paramount+ cancel my subscription?
Reinstalling normally removes the local app and its data, not the subscription. You may need to sign in again. Do not cancel and resubscribe solely because Error 1204 appears.
What information should I send Paramount support?
Provide the code, title, device model, operating-system and app versions, region, date and time, whether all titles fail, whether another device works, and whether Wi-Fi, cellular data, VPN, proxy, or filtering settings change the result.
