Yes, VLC can play some stations listed on TuneIn—but usually not from the TuneIn webpage or share link. You need the station’s direct audio-stream URL or an accessible playlist such as .m3u, .pls, or .m3u8. VLC then opens that address as a network stream.
What you need
- Desktop VLC Media Player for Windows, macOS, or Linux.
- A broadcaster-published direct stream or playlist URL.
- A network connection that can reach the station’s stream.
VLC is a general media player, not an official TuneIn client. It does not normally connect to TuneIn’s station directory, account system, recommendations, or web player. TuneIn distinguishes between a web-player URL and the raw streaming URL used by media players. See TuneIn’s stream URL guidance.
Find the station’s direct stream URL
Use TuneIn to identify the station, then obtain the stream from the broadcaster’s official website:

- Open the broadcaster’s website and look for Listen Live, Stream, Player, MP3 stream, Playlist, M3U, or PLS.
- Copy the direct stream or playlist address if the broadcaster publishes one.
Typical format examples include:
https://radio-station.example/live.mp3
https://radio-station.example/listen.pls
https://radio-station.example/stream.m3u
https://radio-station.example/live/playlist.m3u8These are examples only, not guaranteed live addresses. A valid stream may also have no file extension, may include query parameters, or may redirect to another stream.

A TuneIn station page, short share link, or embedded-player page usually opens HTML, JavaScript, advertising, or an app handoff—not the audio endpoint VLC needs. Do not assume that browser developer tools will produce a permanent or authorized stream: modern players may use cookies, signed URLs, session tokens, login requirements, or protected delivery. Prefer URLs documented or published by the broadcaster, and do not bypass access controls.
Open the stream in VLC
These instructions apply to desktop VLC. Labels can vary slightly by version.
- Open VLC Media Player.
- Select Media from the menu bar.
- Choose Open Network Stream.
- Paste the direct stream or playlist URL into the Network field.
- Select Play.
VideoLAN documents this workflow in its desktop VLC network-stream documentation. On Windows and Linux, Ctrl+N commonly opens the network-stream dialog, but the menu path is safer because shortcuts can vary by platform, version, and keyboard layout.

Select: PlayOpening M3U, PLS, and M3U8 addresses
- .m3u or .pls: Usually a playlist containing one or more stream addresses. VLC may play the first entry or display several entries for you to choose from.
- .m3u8: An HLS playlist. It may reference many small audio segments rather than being the audio itself.
- .mp3 or .aac: Often a direct audio endpoint, although extensions do not guarantee that the server actually returns playable audio.
Paste playlist URLs into the same Open Network Stream field. If VLC downloads the playlist instead of playing it, save the file locally and open it in VLC, or ask the broadcaster for the individual stream URL.

HLS playback depends on the particular stream. An .m3u8 may require current tokens, cookies, headers, or a specific client. If the broadcaster offers an official MP3 or PLS alternative, try that first.
Save a working station for later
Once a direct stream plays, add it to a local VLC playlist using Media → Save Playlist to File or VLC’s playlist controls, depending on your version. Save the playlist in a format VLC can reopen, such as .xspf or another supported playlist format.
A saved address can stop working if the station changes providers, replaces the stream, uses a temporary token, or restricts external players. If that happens, return to the broadcaster’s official website and obtain the current address.
Troubleshooting
“VLC cannot open the MRL”
This commonly means the address is a TuneIn webpage rather than a stream, contains a typo, is offline, requires authentication, has expired, is geo-restricted, or is blocked by a firewall, DNS filter, VPN, or network policy.

- Check that you copied the complete URL.
- Open it in a browser only to determine whether it is a webpage, redirect, download, or stream.
- Look again on the broadcaster’s official site for an MP3, PLS, M3U, or alternate-player link.
- Try the HTTPS version if the broadcaster publishes both HTTP and HTTPS versions.
- Test another known-good public stream to determine whether VLC itself is working.
- Temporarily disable a VPN or network filter for diagnosis, if appropriate.
- Update VLC from the official VideoLAN website.
Contact the station when its stream is offline or access is restricted. Do not remove authentication or attempt to defeat geographic or licensing controls.
VLC opens a webpage instead of playing audio
The address is probably a web-player or embedded-player URL. A raw stream may look meaningless in a browser, so VLC’s ability to buffer audio is the more useful test. TuneIn’s documentation explains why a web-player URL and raw stream URL are different.
The stream buffers indefinitely or stops
The station may be offline, overloaded, intermittent, changing feeds, or limiting external players. The URL may also be temporary or require browser-specific cookies or headers. TuneIn lists outages, network problems, format compatibility, geography, licensing, and product compatibility among possible causes of station playback failures.

Try the broadcaster’s alternate stream, test without a VPN, and compare playback on the broadcaster’s own player. If the official player works but VLC does not, the station may be supplying additional playback logic that VLC does not receive.

VLC appears to play but there is no sound
- Check VLC’s volume and mute controls.
- Check the operating system’s per-application volume mixer.
- Confirm the selected output device, especially with Bluetooth or HDMI audio.
- Try another audio stream to separate a VLC problem from a silent station feed.
- If a playlist loaded, confirm that the selected entry actually contains playable audio.
An M3U8 stream fails
HLS is not automatically incompatible with VLC, but the playlist or its segment URLs may require an unexpired token, specific headers, cookies, or a compatible implementation. An official MP3 or PLS stream is usually the simpler option when available.
The station works in TuneIn but not VLC
TuneIn or the broadcaster’s player may resolve metadata, select a regional feed, supply request headers, manage authentication, insert advertising, or enforce licensing rules. A TuneIn Custom URL is intended for entering a private stream into TuneIn; it does not convert a TuneIn station page into a VLC-compatible address. See TuneIn’s Custom URL explanation.

VLC works well when a station publishes a stable, accessible MP3, AAC, or playlist URL and you want desktop playback, keyboard controls, local playlists, or custom audio-output routing.
TuneIn is the better choice when you need directory search, station recommendations, account features, metadata, connected-device support, or access to a station that is available only through a protected player. The broadcaster’s own player may also be the most reliable and officially supported option.

Mobile VLC
Android and iPhone versions of VLC have different interfaces and capabilities from desktop VLC. The exact Media → Open Network Stream path described above is for desktop VLC. On mobile, use the app’s network-stream or open-media function if your version provides it; otherwise, use TuneIn or the broadcaster’s mobile player.
Access, geography, and recording
A station may be unavailable in your country because of geography, licensing, provider restrictions, or a station-side policy. VLC does not remove those restrictions. TuneIn can also change or limit access to third-party content; review the applicable TuneIn terms.
Listening through VLC does not automatically grant permission to record, rebroadcast, redistribute, or commercially use a station’s programming. Check the broadcaster’s and service’s terms and applicable law before recording or sharing content.
