Instagram’s Watch History gives users a way to revisit Reels they watched but did not save or like. In the mobile app, open Profile → ☰ → Your Activity → Watch history. The feature was introduced in October 2025, but availability, labels and the amount of history shown can vary by account and app version.
What Instagram Watch History does
Watch History is a viewing log for Reels. It is designed for the familiar situation in which a useful recipe, news clip, tutorial or entertaining video disappears from the feed before you can save it.
It is separate from other Instagram records:
- Saved posts: Reels and posts you deliberately bookmarked.
- Liked posts: Content you tapped Like on.
- Search history: Searches made from your account.
- Your Activity: Instagram’s broader activity-management area, which contains Watch History among other tools. See Instagram’s Your Activity documentation.
- Browser history: Pages visited through a web browser, rather than a record of Reels watched in the Instagram app.
Instagram announced the Reels feature in late October 2025. TechCrunch and 9to5Mac reported the launch on October 24.

- Open the Instagram mobile app.
- Tap your Profile tab.
- Tap the three-line menu in the upper-right corner.
- Open Your Activity.
- Select Watch history.
- Tap a Reel in the list to watch it again.
Some versions or guides place an additional Settings step before Your Activity. The important destination is Your Activity → Watch history; menu labels and placement may differ between iPhone, Android and account versions.

How to find a particular Reel
Launch coverage describes several ways to narrow the list:
- Sort from newest to oldest or oldest to newest.
- View Reels from all dates, the past week or the past month.
- Choose a custom date range.
- Filter by the account or creator that posted the Reel.
- Select entries and remove them from Watch History.
These controls are especially useful if you remember roughly when you saw the video or who posted it. The documented tools focus on date and creator filters. The launch reporting does not clearly confirm a general keyword search for captions, songs, hashtags or text in the Reel, so do not assume that typing a phrase will find it.

How far back does Instagram keep watched Reels?
Watch History should be treated as a recent viewing history, not a guaranteed lifetime archive. Launch coverage commonly described a visible history of approximately the previous 30 days, including reports from Social Media Today and TechBriefly.

Other coverage used broader wording, including references to every Reel watched, but it did not establish a universal permanent retention period. Instagram has not clearly documented one identical retention rule for every account. If an older Reel is missing, that may reflect the available history window rather than a search failure.

Why Watch History may be missing
Instagram has been rolling out the feature, and reports from users in 2025 and 2026 suggest that its visibility and behavior have varied. Those reports are anecdotal, so they do not establish an official rollout policy. Availability may depend on your app version, operating system, account and rollout status.
If you cannot find it:
- Update Instagram through the official App Store or Google Play Store.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Look through the sections of Your Activity again, since labels can move.
- Log out and back in only if you have confirmed that you know your account credentials.
- Try again later if the feature has not reached your account.
Reinstalling Instagram may resolve an app problem, but it does not guarantee that Watch History will be activated. The documented launch route is for the mobile app; the available reporting does not confirm a separate Watch History page on Instagram’s desktop website or web app.

Important limitations
A history entry cannot restore an unavailable Reel
A Reel may remain listed but fail to play if the creator deleted it, made it private, restricted access, or if Instagram removed it for a policy or copyright reason. A private Reel may also require that you still have access to the account that posted it. These are practical possibilities rather than uniformly documented product rules.
Removing an entry is not deleting the Reel
The reported controls let you remove selected Reels from your Watch History. That removes the item from the list; it does not delete the original Reel, unfollow its creator or necessarily erase all underlying account data.

It is not a creator-viewer list
There is no basis in the reviewed launch information for claiming that creators or followers can see your complete Watch History. Creator analytics are a separate system and report aggregate metrics such as watch time, not a public list of every individual viewer. Instagram describes Reel insights in its Help Center.
It may not record or sync everything identically
The reviewed reporting does not establish that every Reel view is logged consistently or that history is synchronized identically across devices. Some users have also reported unexpected entries, but those accounts are anecdotal and should not be treated as a confirmed Instagram-wide defect.
What to try if the Reel is not there
Watch History is most useful when the viewing was recent. If it does not locate the video, try these alternatives:
- Check Saved posts.
- Review liked content in Your Activity.
- Search direct-message conversations where someone may have sent or shared the Reel.
- Search Instagram for the creator, audio, caption phrase, hashtag or topic.
- Check your device or browser history if you opened the Reel through a web link.
- Ask the sender to share it again if it arrived in a message.
These methods only help when the relevant action happened—for example, saving the Reel, liking it, receiving it in a message or opening it in a browser.
