A real zebra escaped near North Bend, Washington, in April 2024. Within days, the missing animal appeared in fabricated online scenes involving Seattle landmarks, ferries, restaurants and even Bigfoot. KOMO News eventually asked members of its #SoNorthwest Photography community to keep those AI-generated and digitally edited zebra jokes in one designated comment thread instead of posting them separately.
The real zebra search
Four zebras escaped from a trailer near North Bend on April 28, 2024, while being transported from Washington to Montana. North Bend is about 30 miles east of Seattle, near Interstate 90. Three animals were recovered quickly, but the fourth remained missing for nearly six days. The incident became a major local curiosity as officials and residents searched the area.
The missing zebra—later identified as Shug—was recaptured near North Bend on Friday, May 3, 2024. The escape and recovery are documented in Associated Press coverage of the escape and its report on the recapture.

While Shug was still missing, social-media users began creating images that placed the zebra in recognizable Pacific Northwest settings. Examples reported by GeekWire included a Seattle-area ferry, Dick’s Drive-In, the SR 520 bridge, Pike Place Market, sporting and government locations, and scenes with Bigfoot.

These were not verified sightings. They were fabricated, digitally edited or AI-generated images. The wording matters: the reporting referred to both AI creations and Photoshop-style composites, so it would be inaccurate to claim that every meme was made with generative AI.
The humor was largely harmless, but synthetic or edited images can still create confusion when they appear alongside genuine local-news material. During a live search, a fictional image can also clutter the stream of information people use to identify an animal or follow an official update.

What KOMO News asked users to do
The station at the center of the story was KOMO News, a Seattle television outlet. Its digital team made the request in the station’s #SoNorthwest Photography Facebook community, which GeekWire described as a forum for Pacific Northwest photographers to submit weather-related and scenic images for possible use on KOMO’s website, social channels or broadcasts. The community had approximately 46,000 members at the time.

According to GeekWire’s May 3, 2024 report, KOMO asked members to place zebra memes and edited zebra photographs in one designated comment thread. Standalone zebra posts would be removed.

That was a consolidation rule, not necessarily a blanket ban on memes or AI imagery. KOMO was trying to keep the main community feed focused on the photography it was created to collect while giving the viral joke a single place to continue.

- A genuine breaking event: the zebra really was missing near North Bend.
- Participatory internet culture: residents and businesses turned the search into a shared regional joke.
- Easy image manipulation: generative tools and conventional editing software made fictional scenes quick to produce and circulate.
The central issue for KOMO appears to have been relevance and volume rather than an assertion that every meme was dangerous. A photography community designed for useful local submissions can become difficult to use when one viral subject overwhelms unrelated weather and scenic images.
It is also important not to overstate the station’s position. The available reporting does not establish a general KOMO policy against AI-generated images, nor does it show that the station formally classified all zebra memes as misinformation. The documented action applied to a specific community and redirected the content into one thread.
The story ended when Shug was found
By the time GeekWire published its article on May 3, the search had reached its conclusion: Shug had been recaptured. Later local coverage described the rescue as effectively ending the burst of zebra memes. The episode is therefore best understood as a short-lived case study in how a real local story, synthetic imagery and community moderation can collide—not as an ongoing Seattle news controversy.
For readers encountering the old headline now, the essential distinction is simple: the escaped zebra was real, but the appearances at Seattle landmarks and other locations were jokes or edited creations, not evidence that Shug had visited those places.
