The quickest method depends on where Amazon Music is playing. On an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad, open Amazon Music and go to Profile → Settings → Sleep timer. On an Echo or other Alexa-enabled device, say: “Alexa, set a sleep timer for 30 minutes.”
The controls differ across mobile, Alexa, desktop, and Fire TV, so use the instructions for your playback device below.
Set a sleep timer in the Amazon Music app
Amazon’s current staff instructions direct mobile users through the following path: Profile → Settings → Sleep timer. The instructions were confirmed in an Amazon staff response dated February 5, 2026.
- Open the Amazon Music app.
- Tap the Profile icon in the upper corner.
- Tap the Settings gear.
- Scroll through Settings and select Sleep timer.
- Choose the duration shown by your app and activate the timer.
- Return to playback and confirm that the timer is enabled.
This is the primary method for Android phones and tablets. The same route is the best starting point on iPhone and iPad, although labels and icon placement can vary by app version. Older guides may show a three-dot menu or a gear icon in a different location; follow the current Profile and Settings route first.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Change or cancel the mobile timer
Reopen Profile → Settings → Sleep timer and select a new duration or the option to disable the timer, if displayed. The exact controls can differ between app builds. If the timer is not visible while playback is running, check the complete Settings page rather than relying on an older screenshot.
Use Alexa or an Echo
When music is playing through an Echo, Echo Show, Echo Link, or another Alexa-enabled device, use an explicit sleep-timer command:
“Alexa, set a sleep timer for 30 minutes.”
Replace the duration as needed:
- “Alexa, set a sleep timer for one hour.”
- “Alexa, set a sleep timer for 8 hours.”
Amazon gives both 30-minute and eight-hour examples in its support discussions: Echo sleep-timer guidance and Amazon’s eight-hour example.

Say “sleep timer,” not merely “set a timer.” A regular Alexa timer is generally a countdown reminder; a sleep timer is intended to stop ongoing audio playback. Alexa control is most reliable when the Echo itself is playing the music. If Amazon Music is playing independently on your phone, a command to the Echo may not stop that phone session.
If “Sleep timer” is missing
Try these steps in order:
- Update Amazon Music through Google Play or the App Store.
- Confirm that you are using the Amazon Music app, not the Alexa app or a mobile browser.
- Open Profile → Settings and scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Force-close and reopen Amazon Music.
- Sign out and sign back in.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
Amazon’s current response confirms the feature in the Android app, but menu placement and availability are not documented as identical for every app build, device, or region. If it remains unavailable, use the platform-specific alternatives below.
iPhone and iPad fallback: use the Clock app
If Amazon Music does not show its own timer and playback is coming from the iPhone or iPad, iOS may be able to stop audio through the Clock app:

- Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound. Pair your Echo Dot Max with compatible Fire TV devices to create a home theater system that brings scenes to life.
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
- Start playing Amazon Music.
- Open Clock and select Timer.
- Set the desired duration.
- Open the timer’s ending-action menu.
- Choose Stop Playing.
- Tap Start.
This is a fallback rather than an Amazon Music-specific control. It may stop whichever app currently owns audio playback, so it can affect other audio as well. Apple may change the menu labels or placement in later iOS versions.
Windows and Mac
Current secondary coverage reports that the Windows and macOS Amazon Music desktop apps may not expose the same native sleep-timer control as the mobile app. This is a version-dependent limitation rather than a permanent guarantee; desktop features can change with updates.
If no in-app timer is available, you can use the computer’s sleep or shutdown scheduling features as a last resort. That workaround affects the entire computer, not just Amazon Music. It may interrupt downloads, close applications, disconnect work, or shut down a laptop that is still being used. It is therefore unsuitable when you need the computer to remain active.

Fire TV
Fire TV behavior can vary by device and software version. Look for a device-level Sleep Timer under Fire TV’s Settings, or try asking an Alexa-enabled remote to set a sleep timer.
A Fire TV device timer may put the entire Fire TV to sleep rather than stopping only Amazon Music. Verify what the timer controls on your particular device before relying on it overnight.

Alexa confirms the timer but music continues
- Start playback directly on the Echo by saying, “Alexa, play Amazon Music.”
- Then repeat, “Alexa, set a sleep timer for 30 minutes.”
- Use the exact phrase “set a sleep timer” rather than “set a timer.”
- Check whether a phone connected by Bluetooth is actually the audio source.
- Stop playback, restart it on the Echo, and set the timer again.
Bluetooth, casting, multi-room playback, and handoffs between devices may not behave identically. Amazon’s voice-command guidance confirms the Echo method, but not every connected-device configuration.

The wrong audio stops
This is most likely with a system-level workaround such as iPhone’s Stop Playing. Use Amazon Music’s own sleep timer when you want app-specific behavior.
Playback resumes later
Distinguish between a timer failing to stop playback and playback restarting afterward. Auto-play, a second device using the same Amazon account, Alexa routines, alarms, Bluetooth reconnection, or a playback handoff can cause music to resume.
Bluetooth headphones or speakers remain on
A timer may stop the source audio without powering off the connected headphones or speaker. Disconnect or switch off the external device separately if battery life matters.

| Playback device | Best method |
|---|---|
| Android phone or tablet | Amazon Music → Profile → Settings → Sleep timer |
| iPhone or iPad | Amazon Music → Profile → Settings → Sleep timer |
| Echo or Alexa-enabled speaker | “Alexa, set a sleep timer for 30 minutes” |
| iPhone fallback | Clock → Timer → Stop Playing |
| Windows or Mac | Use computer sleep/shutdown scheduling only if interrupting the whole computer is acceptable |
| Fire TV | Check the device Sleep Timer or use Alexa; confirm its scope |
For mobile listening, the Amazon Music app timer is the least disruptive option. For Echo playback, the explicit Alexa sleep-timer command is fastest. Use system or device-level workarounds only when you understand that they may affect audio or activity beyond Amazon Music.
