The awkward video is real, but “refusing” is not proven. During a group photograph at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi on February 19, 2026, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stood beside one another as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders raised joined hands. The two did not clasp hands; instead, they ultimately raised separate fists.
That visible moment became a viral symbol of the rivalry between their companies. But the footage does not establish that either executive deliberately snubbed the other.
What happened at the AI summit?
The scene took place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi after the opening session of the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Modi stood with a group of political and technology leaders for a staged photograph, including Altman, Amodei, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, Meta chief AI officer Alexandr Wang and Sarvam co-founder Pratyush Kumar.

As the group prepared for the photograph, Modi and nearby participants raised their hands in a symbolic display of unity. The gesture was closer to joining and lifting hands together than to a conventional handshake.

Altman and Amodei were positioned next to each other. They appeared to hesitate rather than connect hands, and both eventually raised separate fists. The short clip was widely reposted online, where viewers treated the failed handclasp as a visual expression of the OpenAI–Anthropic rivalry. The Associated Press reported on the moment, as did India Today and Moneycontrol.
Did they deliberately refuse to hold hands?
There is no verified evidence that they did. The video shows that Altman and Amodei did not clasp hands. It does not show why.

The moment may have resulted from confusion, the quick choreography of a staged photograph, awkward positioning or a decision by one or both men not to participate. Their corporate rivalry makes the hostile interpretation easy to understand, but it does not prove that interpretation.
It is also imprecise to describe the scene as Altman rejecting a handshake from Amodei. This was not a normal greeting. It was a group-photo pose involving raised, connected hands, and the brief viral clip may not show every instruction or movement immediately before and after the moment.

What did Sam Altman say?
Altman later offered a notably less dramatic explanation. Speaking to reporters, he said: I was sort of confused and didn’t know what I was supposed to do.
He also explained that Modi had grabbed and raised his hand, leaving him uncertain about the intended gesture. Moneycontrol reported his comments, with similar accounts appearing in NDTV’s coverage.
Altman’s explanation does not account for Amodei’s actions, and it does not rule out every possible interpretation. It does, however, provide direct evidence for confusion as at least one explanation—and there is no comparable public statement from Amodei confirming that he intentionally refused contact.

Why did a few seconds become such a big story?
The image had all the ingredients of a viral clip:
- Two of the world’s most recognizable AI executives were standing side by side.
- A large group appeared to be presenting a coordinated image of unity.
- The chain of joined hands visibly broke at the exact point where the two rivals stood.
- Both men raised separate fists, creating a stark and easily captioned contrast.
- OpenAI and Anthropic are already competing for customers, talent, computing resources, investment and influence over AI policy.
Social-media users and commentators turned the photo-op into a metaphor for the companies’ competition. That interpretation explains why the footage resonated, but online jokes and memes are not evidence of personal hostility or intent.
The OpenAI–Anthropic rivalry
Amodei previously worked at OpenAI before co-founding Anthropic with other former OpenAI employees. Reporting has described disagreements involving the direction of OpenAI, safety, governance and the pace of commercialization as factors in Anthropic’s formation. Those issues are complex and should not be reduced to one confirmed cause.

Anthropic and OpenAI now operate as direct competitors in advanced AI. Their rivalry extends beyond model performance: both companies seek enterprise customers, developers, research talent, substantial computing capacity and a role in shaping public policy.
The competitive atmosphere had also recently been highlighted by Anthropic’s Super Bowl advertising. The company ran satirical ads mocking OpenAI’s reported plans to introduce advertising into ChatGPT. The campaign was widely interpreted as criticism of OpenAI’s business direction, but there is no evidence that it caused or directly explains the summit photo-op. The AP included that commercial context in its report.

The video captures a genuinely awkward few seconds at a high-profile international summit. It also became unusually symbolic because the people involved lead two rival AI companies with shared institutional history.

The footage does not prove that either man deliberately refused as an act of hostility.
For now, the “snub” is an interpretation layered onto a real moment of uncertainty—not an established fact.
