YouTube Premium Lite is no longer merely “coming soon.” YouTube expanded the lower-priced membership to the United States in March 2025 and added background play and downloads for most eligible videos in February 2026. It removes ads from most regular YouTube and YouTube Kids videos, but it is not completely ad-free: advertisements may still appear on music content, Shorts, search results, and browsing screens.
For viewers who mainly watch documentaries, news, technology, education, gaming, cooking, or other conventional long-form videos—and do not need YouTube Music—Premium Lite may be the better-value option. Heavy music users, Shorts viewers, families, and anyone wanting the broadest Premium feature set should look at full YouTube Premium instead.
What is YouTube Premium Lite?
YouTube Premium Lite is an individual membership positioned below full YouTube Premium. Its main benefit is fewer interruptions while watching most ordinary YouTube and YouTube Kids videos.
The United States expansion was announced on March 5, 2025, at an announced launch price of $7.99 per month. On February 24, 2026, YouTube added background playback and downloads for most eligible videos.

That means older articles describing Premium Lite as a plan without downloads or background play are out of date. The plan is now closer to full Premium, but important exclusions remain.
What Premium Lite includes
- Ad-free viewing on most regular YouTube videos.
- Ad-free viewing on most YouTube Kids videos.
- Background play for most eligible videos.
- Downloads for most eligible videos.
- Support across supported devices and markets.
“Most eligible videos” matters. YouTube does not promise that every video, content type, or app surface will receive every benefit.
What “ad-free” does not mean
Premium Lite is not a universal ad-removal subscription. According to YouTube’s current help documentation, ads may still appear in several situations:

- Music content: This includes official music videos, premium music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and some user videos containing music-partner material.
- YouTube Shorts: Shorts can continue to show ads.
- Search and browsing: Ads may appear while searching or browsing YouTube, even if the video you eventually watch is covered.
- Embedded sponsorships: Creator-read advertisements, product placements, affiliate mentions, and sponsored segments inside a video are part of the video itself. A YouTube membership does not remove them.
For accuracy, describe Lite as mostly ad-free for regular, non-music videos rather than simply calling it “the ad-free tier.”

YouTube’s comparison also identifies full-Premium features such as continue watching, Jump ahead, queuing, and certain high-quality audio and video options that are not part of the Lite experience. Exact availability can vary by market and app version, so check the comparison shown during signup.
How much does Premium Lite cost?
YouTube announced the U.S. plan at $7.99 per month in March 2025. Reports in 2026 said the U.S. price had increased to $8.99 per month, but that figure should not be treated as a worldwide or permanent price.

YouTube’s current guidance sends users to youtube.com/premiumlite to see the price applicable to their account. The amount can vary according to country, currency, taxes, billing platform, promotions, and eligibility. Check the live signup page rather than relying on an old article, screenshot, or launch announcement.
Where is YouTube Premium Lite available?
YouTube’s availability list currently includes:
Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, Romania, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United States, Venezuela, and Vietnam.
The list can change, and availability may differ by territory or account. Use YouTube’s current availability page and the Premium Lite signup page for the final check.

How to check eligibility and subscribe
- Sign in to the Google or YouTube account you intend to use.
- Open youtube.com/premiumlite.
- Review the displayed price, benefits, billing platform, and renewal terms.
- Confirm the payment method and complete the purchase if the limitations suit your viewing habits.
If the subscription is billed through Google Play, Apple, or a partner, management and cancellation may be handled through that billing provider rather than directly through YouTube.

Google AI Pro changes the calculation
Google AI Pro includes an individual YouTube Premium Lite benefit in supported countries, including the United States, for eligible paid members. This is Premium Lite, not full YouTube Premium, and it does not include YouTube Music Premium.
If you already pay for Google AI Pro, check Google’s eligibility and benefit information before buying Lite separately. Existing YouTube Premium or Premium Lite subscriptions are not necessarily canceled automatically when the bundled benefit becomes available. A duplicate subscription can therefore be an avoidable expense.
Google AI Pro should not be compared with Lite as though it were a YouTube-only plan. It also includes Google AI services and storage. It makes sense primarily for someone who already wants those services and values Lite as part of the bundle. See Google One’s current plan page for the bundle’s current positioning and price.

Who should choose Premium Lite?
Premium Lite is a good fit if you:
- Mostly watch long-form documentaries, news, education, technology, gaming, cooking, comedy, or beauty videos.
- Do not use YouTube Music.
- Want background playback and downloads for ordinary videos.
- Can tolerate occasional ads on music, Shorts, search, or browsing screens.
- Are buying an individual plan and consider full Premium unnecessary.
Full YouTube Premium is better if you:
- Watch music videos or use YouTube Music regularly.
- Spend much of your time watching Shorts.
- Expect every YouTube page and video to be free of platform-served ads.
- Need the complete Premium feature set.
- Want a family or multi-person option where available.
A quick decision rule
- Do you primarily watch non-music, long-form videos? If yes, Lite may cover the majority of your viewing.
- Do you rely on YouTube Music or watch music videos frequently? If yes, choose full Premium or expect Lite’s ad exclusions to be frustrating.
- Do you mainly watch Shorts? Lite is unlikely to solve the problem you are trying to solve.
- Do several people need coverage? Verify plan availability; Lite is described by YouTube as an individual membership, while full Premium offers broader household options in supported markets.
- Do you already pay for Google AI Pro? Check whether Lite is included before starting another YouTube subscription.
Travel, VPNs, and country switching
Premium benefits can change when you travel. If Lite is unavailable in the country you visit, it may not work normally. YouTube’s availability guidance says downloaded videos may remain available offline for up to 30 days while traveling.
Do not use a VPN or false billing location to obtain a cheaper country price. YouTube’s paid-service restrictions prohibit misrepresenting residence or circumventing availability rules, and the membership may be canceled. Consult YouTube’s travel and availability guidance for the current policy.
