YouTube Premium lets you download eligible videos in the official YouTube app for offline viewing on Android phones and tablets, iPhones, and iPads. Open a video, tap Download, then find it in Downloads in the app.
These are app-only offline copies, not MP4 files: you cannot open them in Gallery or Photos, transfer them to another player, or keep them as permanent files. YouTube also requires the app to reconnect periodically to verify your account and each video’s availability.
Before you download
- Use the official YouTube app and sign in to the Google account with the Premium membership.
- Start the download while connected to the internet. A download interrupted by a lost connection can generally resume after you reconnect.
- Make sure the device has enough free storage. Download availability depends on the video, your location, and your account; not every video can be saved offline.
- Menu names and placement can vary with the app version, operating system, country, and account.
YouTube’s download instructions cover the mobile app. Its offline-viewing help explains that downloaded videos are encrypted and playable only in YouTube.
Download videos on Android
- Open the YouTube app and confirm that you are signed in to the account with Premium.
- Find and open the video you want.
- Tap Download below the video. If YouTube offers quality choices, select one.
- Wait for the download indicator to show that the video is saved.
- To watch it later, tap your profile picture and choose Downloads.
Download videos on iPhone or iPad
- Open the YouTube app and sign in to the same account that has Premium.
- Open the video. Tap Download below the player; depending on the interface, it may be under More.
- Choose a quality if prompted and let the download finish.
- Open the You tab or your profile menu, then choose Downloads to find it.
You can watch saved videos offline in the app, but some actions, such as liking or commenting, require an internet connection. YouTube’s iOS offline-viewing help describes access through the You tab.

Choose download quality and manage storage
To change the default quality, go to Profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads → Download quality. Higher quality generally uses more storage and data and can take longer to download. Lower or standard quality is often sufficient for a phone screen or a commute; a higher setting may suit a tablet or larger display, especially when downloading over Wi-Fi. Available choices depend on the video and device, so there is no reliable universal file-size estimate.
Downloads use the device’s storage. If there is not enough room, remove videos you have finished watching, lower the quality, or turn off automatic downloads. YouTube documents a less-than-5%-free-storage restriction in some regional offline-download contexts; that threshold should not be treated as a universal rule for every Premium user.

Find and delete saved videos
Open Downloads in the YouTube app to browse and play saved videos. They will not appear as regular video files in Android Gallery or Files, iPhone Photos, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or a general-purpose media player.

To remove one, use the video’s downloaded-status control or its menu and choose Delete from downloads or the equivalent label. To clear saved videos in one go, look in Profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads for Delete downloads. Exact wording can differ between app versions.

Smart Downloads: automatic recommendations
Smart Downloads can automatically add recommended videos to your Downloads area. YouTube says new recommendations are added every seven days and older recommendations are replaced. The feature can therefore use storage without you selecting each video, and recommendations may not be the videos you would choose for a particular trip.
To manage it, open Profile picture → Downloads, use the menu to reach Settings, and look for Smart Downloads. Turn it off if you want to choose every download, have limited storage, or want to avoid automatic recommendations. YouTube says Smart Downloads stop when the device loses internet access or storage becomes low. See the Smart Downloads help page for details.

Downloading over mobile data
If a download will not start on cellular data, check Profile picture → Settings → Background & downloads for a Wi-Fi-only or mobile-data download control. The exact setting and label may vary; do not assume every account has the same control. Also check that YouTube is allowed to use mobile data in your device settings. Wi-Fi is the safer choice for high-quality videos or playlists, which can use substantial data.

In most locations, YouTube Premium downloads can be watched offline for up to 29 days before the app must reconnect to check the video and account. Some countries or regions use a 48-hour reconnection window instead. These are not permanent copies: a video may stop working if it is removed, restricted, or no longer available for offline playback. Reconnect the device and allow YouTube to synchronize; the result still depends on the video’s availability and your account status. See YouTube’s download guidance and offline playback information.

Why is the Download button missing or not working?
Use these checks in order. Availability varies, so no single explanation fits every error.
- Check the account. Confirm that the app is signed in to the Google account with Premium. Downloads are associated with the account used to save them; switching accounts can make them unavailable.
- Check the video and region. Some videos cannot be downloaded because of licensing, creator, regional, or other restrictions. Try another video. Premium features and availability vary by location.
- Check your connection. You need to be online to start a download. If it stalls after the connection drops, reconnect and give it a chance to resume.
- Check storage and data settings. Free space, reduce the selected quality, and review whether downloads are restricted to Wi-Fi. On iPhone or iPad, also check that YouTube can use cellular data if you are downloading without Wi-Fi.
- Update the app. Install available YouTube updates through Google Play or the App Store. There is no single universal minimum app version specified for Premium downloads, and interface labels can change.
- Consider the device limit. YouTube Premium offline use is limited to up to 10 devices at a time. YouTube says device swaps are limited to four times in a year; deleting and reinstalling the app can count as a new device registration. If you see a message that the video cannot be taken offline on a new device, review the device-limit rules rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app.
In some locations, the YouTube documentation says downloads may be blocked when less than 5% of device storage remains. Treat this as a regional/device-specific condition, not a universal Premium requirement. Do not rely on a VPN or region change to make restricted content downloadable.
Can you transfer, share, or edit a Premium download?
No—not through YouTube’s official Premium download feature. The saved copy is encrypted and intended for playback inside YouTube, not exporting, editing, reposting, sharing as a file, or opening in VLC or another player. Premium offline viewing is not a permanent file-export service. YouTube’s paid-service terms prohibit copying paid services and circumventing protective technology. Third-party sites and apps that promise unrestricted exports may also create privacy and security risks, and can conflict with YouTube’s terms; this guide does not recommend them.
Related cases: free downloads and purchased shows
In select countries or regions, some videos may be downloadable in the mobile app without Premium. That availability is limited by location and content, so it is not a general substitute for Premium. Check YouTube’s regional offline-download information.
Purchased or rented movies and TV episodes have separate offline-download rules on supported mobile devices; Premium is not required for that specific purchased-content feature. It is distinct from downloading ordinary YouTube videos. See YouTube’s help for purchased and rented titles.
