Start by identifying the symptom. If Netflix plays sound but shows no picture, check the HDMI cable, display, HDCP connection, adapter, browser, or graphics driver first. If there is neither sound nor picture, prioritize the TV input, app state, device restart, network, and Netflix installation. The steps below move from low-risk checks to platform-specific fixes, so you can stop as soon as the cause is isolated.
Netflix treats black or blank screens mainly as device, display-connection, app-data, browser, or network problems—not automatically as account problems. The exact menus differ by TV brand, streaming player, console, browser, and operating system.
1. Confirm what is actually black
First determine whether the Netflix home screen is visible. A completely black TV input is different from a Netflix title that turns black after playback begins.
Test another show or movie. If only one title fails, the problem may be limited to that playback session or title; do not reset the whole device yet. If the Netflix interface responds, press Back, return to the device home screen, reopen Netflix, and try again.

2. Force-close Netflix
Pressing Home may leave the app running. Use the device’s app switcher or force-quit control instead, then launch Netflix again.
Apple TV: Double-tap the remote’s Home button, move to Netflix, and swipe up to force-quit it. Reopen the app. This procedure is Apple TV-specific; other platforms use different controls. Netflix documents this and other stuck-loading procedures at its troubleshooting page.
3. Fully restart the TV, player, or console
Standby is not always a complete restart. Turn off the TV, streaming stick, Apple TV, console, Blu-ray player, or computer. If it has a power cable, unplug it, ensure it is fully off, wait at least 15 seconds, reconnect it, and try Netflix again.
Some device-specific Netflix instructions use a longer power cycle: unplug the device, press its power button once, wait one minute, or leave it disconnected for three minutes before reconnecting it. Follow the instruction for your exact device rather than treating one wait time as universal. See Netflix’s TV and streaming-device restart guidance.
4. Restart the modem and router
This matters most when Netflix loads indefinitely, other apps also fail, or several devices have the same problem.
- Turn off the TV or streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem and router.
- Wait for the internet connection to return; some equipment takes several minutes.
- Restart the Netflix device and test again.
You can test the connection directly to Netflix at Fast.com. A speed result cannot diagnose HDMI, HDCP, or display faults, however.

5. Check the TV input
For an external player, select the HDMI input that the Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, console, Blu-ray player, or computer actually uses. Confirm that the player is powered on, both cable ends are secure, and its home screen or status light appears.
If the entire input remains black—even outside Netflix—troubleshoot the TV, input, player, or cable before changing Netflix settings. Input controls vary by TV manufacturer.
6. Connect the player directly to the TV
Temporarily remove every intermediary device:
- AV receiver
- Soundbar with HDMI passthrough
- HDMI switch or splitter
- Capture card
- USB-C dock
- Video adapter
Connect the streaming device directly to the TV. This isolates an HDCP handshake or signal-routing failure. If Netflix works directly, reconnect the removed devices one at a time to identify the failing link.
7. Try another HDMI port
Move the cable to another HDMI input. If only one port fails, the original port, its settings, or its compatibility may be responsible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSome TVs label ports for 4K, HDR, enhanced format, or a particular HDCP version. Test the labeled port and a standard port where appropriate, because capabilities differ by model.
8. Reverse or replace the HDMI cable
- Disconnect and reconnect both ends firmly.
- Reverse the cable ends.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable.
- Avoid visibly damaged, sharply bent, or unnecessarily long cables.
- Remove unnecessary adapters.
Audio can continue even when the protected video signal fails, so working sound does not prove that the entire HDMI connection is healthy. Replacing the cable is a diagnostic test, not a guarantee of a fix.
9. Check HDCP compatibility
HDCP is the copy-protection handshake used in many protected video paths. A failure anywhere between the source and display can produce a black screen, particularly with computers, projectors, USB-C adapters, switches, receivers, or older TVs.

Check the complete chain: source device, cable, adapter or dock, receiver or soundbar, selected port, and TV or projector. Netflix specifically mentions HDCP 2.2 for relevant iPhone and iPad USB-C or Thunderbolt display connections. That does not mean every Netflix setup or resolution universally requires HDCP 2.2.

10. Stop unsupported screen mirroring
Do not confuse casting from a supported Netflix app with mirroring the entire phone or tablet screen. Netflix says that AirPlay and Screen Mirroring are no longer supported, and that Android screen-mirroring features may not work. iPad Screen Mirroring and Sidecar should be turned off while Netflix is playing. Chromecast users may need to disconnect Google Home screen mirroring.
Use the Netflix app installed on the TV or streaming player, or another supported playback method, instead of relying on a generic mirroring workaround. See Netflix’s current device guidance.
11. Check iPhone and iPad adapters
For Lightning-equipped iPhones and iPads, Netflix lists Apple HDMI adapter model numbers A1438 and A1621 in the relevant troubleshooting guidance. A different adapter may be unsupported; compatibility can also depend on the device and software version.
For USB-C or Thunderbolt connections, select the correct TV input, confirm the adapter and display path support the required HDCP standard, reverse the cable ends, and try another display port. Test the device directly on a TV rather than through a dock or switch.

Install any available Netflix update from the device’s app store. This is especially relevant if Netflix recently stopped working, playback fails while other apps work, the app crashes, or it returns to the device menu.
Netflix notes that crashes can indicate stored app data needs refreshing, though updating does not prove that corrupted data is the cause. See Netflix’s crash and closure guidance.

13. Update the device or TV firmware
Install the latest system or firmware update available for the TV, streaming device, console, phone, tablet, or computer. Menu paths vary by model and software version.
For example, LG places software-update controls within the TV’s support settings, but the exact path depends on the webOS version and model; consult LG’s current Netflix troubleshooting page. Android users should update the operating system through Android Settings and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Use the least destructive option available:
- Sign out of Netflix and sign back in.
- Clear Netflix cache or app data if the platform provides that control.
- Uninstall and reinstall Netflix.
- Use the device’s Netflix reset option.
Cache clearing can help with corrupted local app data, but it cannot repair an HDMI cable, bad port, incompatible adapter, failed HDCP handshake, unsupported mirroring, network outage, or graphics-driver problem. The menu is not universal across Android TV, Fire TV, Roku, Samsung TV, LG webOS, Apple TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Windows, and macOS.
Xbox One example: Open My Games & Apps → Apps, highlight Netflix, press the Menu button, choose Manage App → Uninstall All, then reinstall Netflix from the Store. This path applies to Xbox One and should not be assumed for other platforms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.15. Reset the device only as a last resort
A factory reset may remove installed apps, Wi-Fi credentials, device settings, sign-in information, and personal preferences. Before using it, have your Wi-Fi name and password and Netflix sign-in details available.
Try the direct HDMI test, alternate cable, alternate port, software updates, sign-out, and reinstall first. Netflix’s stuck-loading instructions explain platform-specific reset options.
16. Fix the computer, browser, or external display chain
If Netflix works on the TV but not on a laptop, the computer-side display path is the likely starting point. Test the laptop’s built-in screen first, then try the external display without a dock or adapter.

- Remove HDMI adapters, splitters, and capture devices.
- Temporarily disable screen-recording, mirroring, or overlay software.
- Try a clean browser session without extensions.
- Test without a VPN or proxy.
- Restart after browser or driver updates.
Netflix specifically recommends updating the browser and Windows video drivers and trying another browser where a suitable driver is unavailable. Do not disable HDCP, install unofficial Netflix clients, edit the Windows registry, or use DRM-bypass workarounds. Changing hardware acceleration or GPU settings is not a universal Netflix fix and should only be considered for a precisely identified browser and driver problem.
17. Test another TV or playback device
Use the same player and cable on another TV, or use another supported Netflix device on the original TV. These comparisons are more useful than guessing:
- Same player and cable work on another TV: Focus on the original TV’s HDMI port, firmware, input configuration, enhanced/deep-color settings, or HDCP compatibility.
- Another player works on the original TV: Focus on the first player, its app, firmware, or output settings.
- Every player fails on the original TV: Suspect the TV, its port, or the display chain.
- All devices fail everywhere: Investigate the network, Netflix service status, VPN/proxy settings, or an ISP issue.
What to do in common cases
Netflix has sound but no picture
Start with the HDMI port and cable, then bypass receivers and switches. Check HDCP compatibility, adapters, HDR or display-mode behavior, browser rendering, and graphics drivers. A network reset is lower priority unless other apps also fail.
Recommended Free Tools
Netflix is black only on a projector
Projectors often add older HDMI standards, long cables, switches, receivers, and HDCP compatibility issues. Connect the source directly to the projector or, preferably, test the same source on a TV using a short known-good cable. If it works on the TV, inspect the projector’s input, firmware, and protected-video support before replacing it.
Netflix works on the TV but not on a laptop
Compare the laptop’s built-in display with the external screen. Then try a different browser, updated graphics drivers, one display only, and a direct HDMI connection without a dock or adapter.
Netflix works on another TV
The original TV’s HDMI port, firmware, enhanced-format settings, or HDCP compatibility becomes more likely. Netflix specifically notes that successful playback on another TV may indicate a problem with the original TV’s HDMI port.
Is Netflix down?
Do not assume an outage from one black screen. If Netflix fails across multiple devices and networks, check Netflix’s official support or service-status channels at the time of the problem. If only one TV, browser, or HDMI setup fails, a local device or connection issue is more likely. Outage status changes, so it must be checked when publishing or updating this article.

When to stop troubleshooting
Contact Netflix if the problem persists across supported devices and direct connections. Contact the TV or device manufacturer if another TV works or the failure follows one port, display, adapter, or player. Contact your ISP if Netflix fails across devices and network tests indicate a connection problem.
When discussing a connection problem with your ISP, Netflix recommends testing at Fast.com. Restore VPN, proxy, custom DNS, or custom modem settings to their defaults for testing; do not buy a VPN as a black-screen fix.
