Peacock did add 4K streaming in September 2022, but it was not a service-wide upgrade. The launch covered a small selection of movies, worked on only certain platforms, and did not include Peacock Originals in 4K at the time. A 4K television alone was not enough: the title, app, device, internet connection, and display setup all had to qualify.
Peacock’s 4K rollout was smaller than it sounded
The announcement was significant because Peacock had previously lacked 4K streaming, but the initial rollout was deliberately limited. In its September 2022 report, Android Headlines identified just 17 movies carrying 4K availability. Most were older films remastered for the format rather than new Peacock productions.
That distinction matters. Peacock’s app could play HD video on many devices, but that did not mean every title was delivered in native 4K. The 4K badge applied at the title level, and the stream also depended on using a supported platform. The original announcement is documented by Android Headlines.
The 17 movies available at launch
The reported launch lineup consisted of:

This is a historical launch-day list, not a current Peacock catalog. Streaming rights, title availability, and video formats can change by date and region. A movie being available in 4K on another service also does not prove that Peacock offers the same version.

Peacock Originals were not 4K at launch
The original report specifically stated that Peacock Originals were not available in 4K when the feature launched. That should be understood as a 2022 limitation, not automatically applied to every title today. Current availability would need to be checked title by title inside Peacock.
There is also no evidence in the supplied official material that 4K universally means HDR, Dolby Vision, or Dolby Atmos. Resolution is a separate feature from those picture and audio formats.
The biggest catch was device support

The same report identified Apple TV, Fire TV, iPhone, and Android mobile devices as excluded from 4K playback at that time. In other words, a subscriber could own a 4K television and still receive only an HD stream if the Peacock app or device did not support the 4K version.
Peacock now lists a much broader range of devices, including Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Google TV, supported LG, Samsung, Hisense, and Vizio televisions, Roku, PlayStation, Xbox, Xumo, and selected cable-provider equipment. The current official device list confirms general app compatibility, however—not guaranteed 4K playback for every device or every title.
A 4K television does not guarantee 4K Peacock playback
There are several separate requirements:
- The title must be offered in 4K. Look for a 4K or UHD badge on the title’s detail page.
- The app must support the 4K stream. General Peacock availability and 4K compatibility are not identical.
- The device must be capable of outputting 4K. This could be a compatible smart-TV app, streaming player, game console, or set-top box.
- The television or monitor must support 4K.
- The HDMI chain must be compatible. With an external player, older cables, receivers, or HDMI switches can prevent a 4K signal from reaching the display.
- The connection must be stable enough. Peacock says 3 Mbps is the general minimum and recommends at least 8 Mbps for certain high-quality live and ultra-high-definition content. That is guidance, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 4K playback.
Adaptive streaming can reduce picture quality when the network is congested. Wi-Fi interference, simultaneous household traffic, device limitations, and title-specific encoding can all result in playback below the highest available resolution.

Does Peacock require Premium Plus for 4K?
The 2022 announcement did not establish a separate 4K surcharge or clearly tie 4K to Premium Plus. It is therefore unsafe to claim that Premium Plus is required, that 4K is included with every plan, or that 4K always costs extra without confirming the current title and plan terms directly with Peacock.

These prices took effect on July 23, 2025, according to Peacock’s price-change notice. The current Select plan should not be confused with Peacock’s old free tier: it excludes major content categories, including movies and Originals. Check the official plans page for current terms.

What has changed since the 2022 rollout?
Peacock’s current help center continues to maintain a page for watching content in 4K Ultra HD, so 4K remains a supported content category. The service’s general app compatibility has also expanded considerably since launch.
What has not been established by the available information is that every current Peacock device supports 4K, that the original 17 movies remain available in UHD, or that every Peacock Original has been upgraded to 4K. Those are separate questions from whether Peacock supports 4K in general.

- Open the movie or program’s detail page in Peacock.
- Look for a visible 4K or UHD badge.
- Confirm that your television, streaming device, and Peacock app are supported and updated.
- Check the display’s information panel, if available, to see what input resolution it is receiving.
- If playback begins in lower quality, reduce other network traffic and test the connection again.
- Do not assume that a 4K television will upscale an HD Peacock stream into native 4K.
If the title has no 4K designation, changing the television settings or buying a new streaming box cannot create a native 4K version. If the title is labeled 4K but still plays in HD, the likely causes include platform restrictions, outdated software, HDMI compatibility, bandwidth, or adaptive bitrate behavior.

Is Peacock’s 4K support worth paying for?
Peacock’s 4K feature is most useful if you already subscribe for its movies, sports, NBC programming, or other content and want higher resolution for a qualifying title on a compatible television. It is a weaker reason to subscribe if you expect the entire library to be 4K, mainly watch Peacock Originals, use a phone or tablet, or are comparing services solely by the size of their UHD catalogs.
The practical verdict is unchanged from the original headline: Peacock’s 2022 4K addition was real, but modest. It expanded the service with a limited set of 4K movies rather than transforming all Peacock content into 4K.
