Apple says Apple Podcasts had its best year yet in 2025, with record listeners, plays, and subscribers. That is a significant first-party claim—but it does not prove that Apple Podcasts is the largest or most popular podcast platform overall.
What Apple actually announced
In a January 2026 review of its services, Apple said 2025 was Apple Podcasts’ “best year yet.” The company reported records for three measures: listeners, plays, and subscribers. Apple also pointed to product updates including automatically generated chapters, Enhanced Dialogue, and links in Apple Podcasts.
The wording matters. Apple described its own performance compared with previous years. The announcement did not provide absolute totals, year-over-year percentages, regional splits, or a comparison with Spotify, YouTube, Amazon Music, or other services. Read Apple’s announcement.

Apple’s statement supports a straightforward conclusion: Apple says its podcast service grew to record levels in 2025. It does not establish that Apple Podcasts:
#1 Best Overall
- CLASS LISTS
- SPECIAL PEOPLE, GROUPS, AND ACTIVITIES PAGES
- SPECIAL DATES, AND BIRTHDAYS PAGE
- SUBSTITUTE INFORMATION PAGES
- has the largest total audience in podcasting;
- gained market share;
- beat Spotify or YouTube;
- has the most listening hours or downloads;
- has the most paid subscribers or podcast revenue; or
- grew equally in every country and category.
“Popular” can mean several different things: unique users, listening time, plays, downloads, followers, paid subscriptions, advertising reach, or influence over discovery. Apple named three internal measures, but it did not explain in the announcement exactly how each was counted. “Listeners,” for example, should not automatically be treated as unique people, and “subscribers” should not automatically be treated as paying customers.
Podcasting itself reached record levels
Independent research does show that Apple was operating in a rapidly expanding market. Edison Research’s Podcast Consumer 2025 study found that, among Americans aged 12 and older:
- 73% had ever consumed a podcast;
- 55% had consumed one in the previous month; and
- 40% had consumed one in the previous week.
Edison described all three figures as all-time highs. It also reported that Americans aged 13 and older spent an estimated 773 million hours per week with podcasts, up 355% from 2015. See Edison’s 2025 findings.

These figures make Apple’s growth claim plausible, but they do not independently measure Apple Podcasts. They describe podcast consumption in the United States across platforms. A rising overall market can lift Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and other services at the same time.

The market is no longer audio-only
There is another reason platform comparisons have become more difficult. Edison’s 2026 research found that in the third quarter of 2025, 82% of weekly podcast consumers actively watched video, while 78% listened to audio-only podcasts. Video consumption had overtaken audio-only consumption for the first time in Edison Podcast Metrics. In 2023, the comparable figures were 73% for video and 89% for audio-only listening.
This does not make Apple’s audio figures irrelevant. It does mean that an assessment of “the most popular podcast platform” must account for video viewing, particularly on services such as YouTube. Traditional download or audio-play comparisons may not capture the whole audience. Read Edison’s 2026 research.
Why Apple’s charts are not proof of overall leadership
Apple’s charts are useful signals of current popularity and discovery activity, but they are not a census of total listening. Apple says its charts are not all-time listening records and are not rankings of the largest podcasts by total listenership.
Apple says chart rankings use a combination of listening, follows, and completion rate. Subscriber charts use additional criteria. Ratings, reviews, and shares do not directly determine the Top Shows and Trending Episodes charts, and automatic downloads do not count toward rankings. Apple also says chart positions cannot be bought or sold. Apple explains its chart methodology here.
Rank #3
That means a show reaching No. 1 on Apple Podcasts has demonstrated strong recent performance under Apple’s ranking system. It does not necessarily have the largest audience across all platforms, the most total listeners in history, or the greatest advertising reach.
Apple’s live U.S. charts are also volatile. At the time of access on August 18, 2026, the Top Subscriber Shows list included programs such as The Daily, Crime Junkie, The Rest Is History, Up First, Dateline NBC, Morbid, and Pod Save America. That snapshot shows what was ranking then—not year-over-year growth or total market size. View the current U.S. charts.
What does “subscribers” mean?
Apple’s announcement says subscribers reached a record, but it does not define the term in enough detail to determine whether it refers to paying Apple Podcasts subscribers, subscriptions to individual shows or channels, free followers, or another internal measure. It also does not say whether the figure is global or limited to particular markets.

Apple’s creator documentation distinguishes subscriber shows and channels, and its subscriber charts measure engagement with subscriber episodes. Those rankings do not represent total subscription revenue or profitability. A record subscriber figure therefore cannot be converted into a record-revenue claim without additional information.

Is the growth global?
Apple presented the 2025 result as a service-wide achievement, but the announcement did not include a complete geographic breakdown. Edison’s percentages are specifically from U.S. research and should not be presented as global statistics.
Apple’s chart availability also varies by market. Top Shows and Trending Episodes are available across more than 170 countries and regions, while subscriber and series charts are available in narrower groups of markets. Geography matters when interpreting any chart or audience figure.

Apple Podcasts appears healthy and growing, and its record listeners, plays, and subscribers indicate that it remains an important distribution and discovery service. Apple-device integration, subscriptions, personalized discovery, and features such as chapters and Enhanced Dialogue continue to give it a substantial role in podcasting.
But listeners should not assume that Apple offers the biggest audience for every show or category. A podcast’s Apple ranking reflects activity within Apple’s ecosystem, not necessarily its total reach on YouTube, Spotify, websites, smart speakers, and other apps.

What this means for creators
For creators and publishers, Apple Podcasts remains a core distribution and subscription channel. Apple’s chart explanation suggests that recent listening, follows, and completion matter more to rankings than simply accumulating automatic downloads.
Creators should still use platform-specific and cross-platform analytics rather than treating a chart position as a complete audience report. Useful comparisons include unique listener estimates, verified downloads, completion, subscriber conversion, geography, audience composition, video performance, and advertising attribution.
Apple’s creator resources are available at Apple Podcasts for Creators, and distribution is managed through Apple Podcasts Connect.

What this means for advertisers
Apple’s announcement is evidence that podcasting remains commercially significant, especially alongside Edison’s record U.S. consumption figures. It is not, by itself, a media-buying guarantee.
Advertisers should evaluate verified reach, audience demographics, listening or viewing behavior, geography, attribution, and campaign objectives. The right platform may differ by show and audience. Apple’s “best year yet” should be treated as market context—not as proof that Apple provides the greatest available reach.
The verdict
Yes: Apple officially says Apple Podcasts had its strongest year ever in 2025. The company reported record listeners, plays, and subscribers, and independent research confirms that podcast consumption overall reached record levels.
No: the available public evidence does not establish that Apple Podcasts is the single most popular podcast platform overall. Apple has not published enough comparable data to prove leadership by users, hours, downloads, market share, subscribers, or revenue. The most accurate reading is that Apple Podcasts is bigger than ever by Apple’s own measures—not that it has definitively overtaken every rival.
