YouTube Music’s lyrics-sharing feature is available on Android and iOS, but it is not a new 2026 launch. YouTube began testing it on Android in April 2025 and expanded the rollout to Android and iPhone in June 2025. The feature lets you choose one to five lines from an eligible song, turn them into a visual card, and share the card with a link back to YouTube Music.
By 2026, YouTube Music had also added optional AI-generated backgrounds for some lyric cards. Availability still depends on the song, region, account, app version and whether YouTube Music has the rights to display that track’s lyrics.
What YouTube Music lyrics sharing does
This is a visual sharing feature, not a tool for copying or exporting complete song lyrics. On supported tracks, YouTube Music creates a card containing:
- One to five selected lyric lines
- The song and artist information
- Artwork or another visual background
- YouTube Music branding
- A link intended to take the recipient back to the song
YouTube Music’s official feature information describes the standard result as an image containing the selected lyric excerpt and a song link. The short selection limit is a product constraint; YouTube has not publicly established that it exists for one specific legal reason.

Later updates added GenAI Lyrics Sharing. Where the option is available, YouTube Music can use the selected lyric phrases to generate a personalized background image. This is an enhancement to the original lyric-card feature, not the original rollout itself.
YouTube Music’s feature roundup documents the one-to-five-line cards and the requirement that the service have rights to display the lyrics. Its later feature update describes the GenAI background option.
How to share lyrics from the YouTube Music app
The labels can vary slightly between app versions and staged interface rollouts, but the reported mobile path is:

- Open the YouTube Music app on Android or iPhone.
- Play a song that has lyrics available.
- Open the song’s lyrics panel.
- Tap the Share button or share icon.
- On the Select lyrics screen, tap the lines you want to include.
- Choose between one and five lines.
- Select the available card design or background option. Some accounts may show an AI-background option, while others may show artwork or a standard visual treatment.
- Tap the system share control.
- Choose Instagram, Messages, WhatsApp, Snapchat, another installed app, or an available copy/share option.
The June 2025 rollout reporting described the selection screen and the five-line maximum. YouTube’s official sharing help page documents ordinary sharing of songs, albums, playlists, podcasts, videos and timestamps, but does not provide a dedicated lyric-card procedure. For that reason, menu names may differ from the sequence above.

What the recipient receives
The recipient should see a visual lyric card and a link back to the song in YouTube Music. The exact presentation can change depending on the destination: Instagram, Messages and other services may resize, crop or otherwise re-render the image.
The link does not guarantee unrestricted playback. The recipient may need the YouTube Music app or a browser, the track may be unavailable in their country, licensing may have changed, or playback may depend on the recipient’s account and current YouTube Music rules.
For the most consistent result, use the operating system’s share sheet and save the card where the app permits it. Do not assume that the card will look identical on every social platform.
Which devices support lyric-card sharing?

“Available on Android and iOS” does not mean that every device, account or song has the same option at the same time. YouTube Music frequently changes mobile interfaces through staged or server-side rollouts.

Why the Share button may be missing
The most important limitation is rights and lyric coverage. YouTube Music says lyric sharing works only for tracks for which it has the rights to display lyrics. The button may therefore be absent even when the app itself is working normally.
Other common explanations include:
- The song has no lyrics in YouTube Music.
- You are viewing a cover, remix, live recording, music video or user-uploaded version with different metadata.
- The lyrics are unavailable in your market.
- The lyrics provider has not supplied or cleared the text.
- Your account or device has not received the relevant interface rollout.
- The app is outdated or experiencing a temporary fault.
- Current account policies restrict access to the lyrics panel.
In 2026, secondary reporting also described wider changes to lyrics access for some free users. That can affect whether a listener reaches the lyrics panel in the first place. The available official rollout information does not establish a universal free-versus-Premium rule for lyric-card sharing, so it is inaccurate to describe the feature as categorically free for everyone or Premium-only.
Fixing a missing lyrics-sharing option
- Confirm that the song has a visible lyrics panel.
- Try the official track instead of a cover, remix, live upload or user-uploaded video.
- Update YouTube Music through Google Play or the Apple App Store.
- Close and reopen the app.
- Sign out and back in if the option previously appeared.
- Test another well-known song with available lyrics.
- Check whether the issue affects only one device or account.
- If other users have the feature but you do not, allow for a staged rollout.
- Report missing or incorrect lyrics through YouTube Music’s available feedback or help channels.
Reinstalling the app or clearing local data may resolve a temporary software problem, but neither step can overcome a licensing restriction or make unavailable lyrics appear. Changing regions is not a reliable way to unlock the feature.

The original 2025 feature created a card using selected lyrics, song information and a visual treatment. The later AI-background update added a way to generate a personalized image based on the selected lyric phrases.

Reports in January 2026 described the AI option appearing on both Android and iOS, sometimes alongside a sparkle-style icon in the share controls. YouTube’s own description calls the feature GenAI; the available evidence does not establish a specific underlying model or technical implementation. If no AI option appears, standard lyric sharing may still be available.

Lyric sharing is not unique to YouTube Music. Spotify introduced lyric sharing earlier, and Apple Music offers a related feature on iPhone.

Spotify’s support documentation covers viewing and sharing lyrics. Spotify has also announced newer lyrics features including translations, offline lyrics for Premium users and lyric previews on mobile. Apple’s iPhone guide documents lyric sharing of up to 150 characters, while its Android lyrics guide explains lyrics access but does not present the same iPhone sharing workflow.
For someone already using YouTube Music, switching services solely for lyric cards may not make sense. Spotify is the closest alternative if lyric sharing and newer lyrics tools are the priority. Apple Music is particularly relevant to iPhone users who want time-synced lyrics integrated into Apple’s ecosystem.

Is YouTube Music Premium required?
The available official feature information does not establish a universal requirement that lyric sharing be Premium-only, nor does it guarantee that every free account receives the same lyrics access. Availability can depend on the song, region, account, rights situation and YouTube Music’s current lyrics policies.
Premium may affect access to the broader service experience, but a subscription should not be purchased solely on the assumption that it will unlock every missing lyric card. Check the current rules for your country on the official YouTube Music membership page.
Timeline: from test to established feature
- April 2025: YouTube Music began testing lyrics sharing on Android, according to 9to5Google’s report.
- June 2025: The feature expanded in a broader rollout to Android and iOS, with selection of up to five lines, as reported by 9to5Google.
- Late 2025 and early 2026: YouTube Music added or began surfacing GenAI background options for lyric cards. January 2026 reporting described the option on Android and iOS.
That history matters: “YouTube Music rolls out lyrics sharing” accurately describes the 2025 news event, but in August 2026 the feature is better described as an established mobile capability with continuing interface and availability differences.
