“Goodbye to my Chinese spy” was a January 2025 TikTok meme that turned a threatened U.S. shutdown into a mass digital farewell. Users addressed an imaginary Chinese operative supposedly monitoring them, thanking the “spy” for curating their For You Page, introducing them to celebrities and niche communities, and seemingly understanding their tastes better than their friends did.
The joke was fictional and satirical—not evidence that an individual Chinese agent was watching users. Its deeper subject was the uneasy intimacy of algorithmic recommendation: the feeling that a platform built from surveillance and prediction had become part of people’s identities.
What was the “Chinese spy” meme?
Also called “My Chinese Spy” or “Me Saying Goodbye to My Chinese Spy,” the trend used a simple format. A creator would speak directly to an imaginary Chinese spy and offer a farewell, often with exaggerated gratitude. The spy was credited with years of attentive surveillance and with perfecting the creator’s For You Page.
Some videos were sentimental. Others were flirtatious, absurd, dramatic, or deliberately uncomfortable. Creators thanked the supposed observer for showing them attractive strangers, tarot readers, celebrities, memes, breaking news, and oddly specific communities they would never have found elsewhere. Some performed the joke in Mandarin. In other versions, creators pretended to be the spy and addressed American users directly.

The humor came from treating a supposedly threatening observer as a loyal companion. Data collection became friendship. Profiling became personal care. Political suspicion became a breakup—or, more accurately, a farewell to a relationship that users knew was strange but did not want to lose.
How the trend began
The earliest widely documented example was posted by TikTok user @claxmcb on January 11, 2025. According to Dexerto, the video thanked the creator’s “Chinese spy” for introducing him to celebrities, memes, and events associated with TikTok. The publication reported that it reached more than 3 million views and 748,000 likes within three days.
A related video by @saltyjimmy on January 12 portrayed the imagined spy monitoring users. Dexerto reported more than 5 million views and 870,000 likes for that example. Those figures are contemporary publication reports, not independently audited TikTok analytics.

Unlike a dance or audio trend, it did not demand choreography, editing skill, or a particular aesthetic. The premise was recognizable immediately, but every creator could fill it with their own digital history.
Why it appeared in January 2025
The timing supplied the meme with something most internet trends lack: a plausible ending date.
The Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act established restrictions affecting TikTok unless ByteDance divested the U.S. operation. The TikTok-related prohibitions were scheduled to take effect on January 19, 2025. The Supreme Court rejected TikTok’s challenge shortly before that deadline.

For users, the issue was no longer an abstract argument about ownership or national security. The app might actually become unavailable. A platform that had shaped people’s routines, friendships, entertainment, political awareness, and sense of humor appeared to have a countdown clock attached to it.
TikTok briefly went offline in the United States around the deadline. On January 20, the White House directed the attorney general to refrain from enforcing the relevant prohibitions for 75 days, creating another period of uncertainty rather than a clean, permanent conclusion. The legal timeline is documented by the White House and the Congressional Research Service.
That uncertainty was perfect meme material. Users could pretend to say goodbye while genuinely wondering whether they were recording a final message.
The joke was about more than China
The phrase “Chinese spy” compressed several different anxieties into one character:
- TikTok’s Chinese ownership and ByteDance’s relationship to China.
- Concerns about personal data and possible government access.
- Fear that recommendation algorithms can influence attention and public opinion.
- The broader U.S.–China technology rivalry.
- The unsettling accuracy with which platforms can predict what users will watch next.
That is why the meme cannot be read as a straightforward statement of belief. Some creators were mocking politicians and the threatened ban. Some were making fun of their own dependence on TikTok. Some were satirizing surveillance. Others were simply participating in a popular joke before a deadline.
The meme did not prove that TikTok data was or was not accessed by Chinese authorities. Nor did it refute the national-security case behind the law. It transformed that complicated dispute into a fictional relationship, which made the issue easier to joke about but less technically precise.

The algorithm as an intimate companion
The imaginary spy often functioned as a stand-in for TikTok’s recommendation system. Users were not merely thanking a government operative; they were thanking the invisible machinery that appeared to know them.
The “spy” supposedly knew which videos a person would watch to the end, which subjects they searched repeatedly, which creators they found attractive, what emotional tone they needed, and which obscure subculture would make them feel at home. In that sense, the character could represent several things at once:
- ByteDance and TikTok’s data practices.
- The Chinese state as imagined in U.S. political rhetoric.
- The recommendation algorithm.
- The user’s accumulated digital identity.
The comedy depends on not separating those meanings too carefully. The user accepts the premise of surveillance, then rejects the expected emotion. Instead of fear, there is affection. Instead of resistance, there is gratitude. The result is funny because it exposes a contradiction: people may dislike being profiled while also valuing the feeling of being understood.
RedNote made the irony sharper
As the shutdown threat intensified, some American TikTok users moved to Xiaohongshu, known in the United States as RedNote. Computing described RedNote as a Chinese-language lifestyle, social-networking, and e-commerce platform. The Daily Beast reported that RedNote became the most-downloaded free app on the U.S. Apple App Store on January 13, 2025.
The migration produced an almost perfect extension of the joke. Users were saying goodbye to one Chinese-owned platform while downloading another. That did not necessarily mean they were unconcerned about privacy. It revealed a different priority: preserving access to a living community and a stream of culturally relevant content.
If users were choosing solely on data sovereignty, RedNote was not an obvious refuge. If they were choosing based on social energy, curiosity, and the prospect of finding a new shared space, the move made more sense. The contradiction exposed the gap between abstract privacy concerns and the concrete desire to belong somewhere online.

Why it felt like a great TikTok trend
Calling it the “last great TikTok trend” is an editorial judgment, not a measurable fact. TikTok continued operating in the United States, and major trends continued after January 2025. But the meme had qualities that made it feel unusually collective.

It had a shared narrative
Millions of users were reacting to the same event and the same anticipated date. The trend had a beginning, a middle, and a possible ending: discover the shutdown threat, make a farewell video, and wait to see whether the app disappeared.
It was easy to personalize
Every creator could identify what their “spy” had supposedly given them. A generic political story became an autobiography assembled from recommendations, obsessions, crushes, and inside jokes.
It crossed cultural registers
The format combined U.S. political anxiety, internet absurdism, Chinese-language performance, fandom, sentimental farewell culture, and self-mockery about algorithmic dependence. It could be sincere and ridiculous in the same few seconds.
It made TikTok itself the subject
Most TikTok trends use the platform without discussing it. This one personified its invisible infrastructure. The algorithm, the company, the geopolitical controversy, and the user’s own media habits became characters in the same joke.

The goodbye was funny partly because it might be premature. Users were not mourning a discontinued app after the fact; they were performing a farewell while the outcome remained uncertain. The possibility of loss made the sentiment feel less manufactured.

What weakens the “last great trend” claim?
The meme was also dependent on a fast-moving news cycle. Many copies repeated the same premise without adding much. Its “greatness” cannot be established by early view counts alone, and its political framing simplified difficult questions about data governance, ownership, Chinese law, and U.S. regulation.
There is also a basic historical problem: TikTok did not permanently vanish from the United States. In January 2026, TikTok announced the TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC. The White House later described the arrangement as a qualified divestiture in which ByteDance would hold less than 20 percent and have limited board representation. Those announcements describe the reported operating and ownership framework; they do not mean every concern about TikTok’s technology, data, or influence disappeared.
That later development changes the meaning of the original farewell. The creators’ expected ending did not occur in the straightforward way they imagined. Yet the moment still mattered because, for a short time, users believed it might be permanent.

The trend’s most revealing feature was not the claim that a Chinese spy existed. It was the recognition that an algorithm had become socially intimate.
TikTok did not simply host the joke; it had supplied the experiences users were thanking the spy for. It had introduced them to people, sounds, obsessions, communities, and political arguments. The imagined watcher was therefore also a personification of the users’ own time on the platform.
That makes the meme a small cultural document of platform dependence. Users could criticize surveillance and still miss the system that performed it. They could distrust corporate control and still feel that the For You Page had found something uniquely theirs. They could joke about national borders while moving from TikTok to another Chinese-owned service in search of the same sense of connection.
So was it literally TikTok’s last great trend? No. That claim cannot be proved, and TikTok survived in the United States.

But it may have been one of the last TikTok trends to feel like a genuinely shared public event: easy for anyone to join, anchored to a real deadline, politically charged, emotionally personal, and self-aware enough to make the platform itself the punchline.
