MKBHD did not start the backlash against dbrand, and he did not secure the company’s first apology or its $10,000 offer to the customer. His intervention came after those steps: he said he would not work with dbrand until it deleted a tweet mocking an Indian customer’s surname. dbrand then agreed to remove it, turning a general social-media controversy into a specific commercial consequence.
The customer complaint that prompted the tweet
On April 9, 2024, Indian customer Bhuwan Chitransh complained on X that a dbrand MacBook skin had discolored after about two months. The exchange began with a conventional support response about cleaning and contacting the company. It became a controversy when dbrand’s main account quote-posted the complaint with the line: “Your last name is basically shit rash, be serious.” Android Central’s account of the exchange describes both the product complaint and the company’s response.
The issue was not simply that a customer reported a product problem. dbrand’s public account made the customer’s name the punchline. Critics and several news outlets described the remark as racist or xenophobic because it targeted an Indian customer’s surname. Those are descriptions of the public reaction, not a legal finding. A company can maintain an irreverent voice, but mocking a paying customer’s name carries a different weight from joking about a product or a complaint.

The post drew widespread criticism and millions of views. dbrand initially kept up its sarcastic tone, including pushing back when asked to “keep the same energy” in an apology. On April 10, it apologized directly to Chitransh, called the episode a “huge fumble,” and offered him $10,000 as a gesture of goodwill, with no strings attached. The company rejected the suggestion that the offer was hush money. Reporting did not establish whether Chitransh accepted it, so the offer should not be described as a settlement or as accepted compensation.

The apology was also qualified: dbrand defended its longstanding habit of making fun of customers and said it would not stop. That distinction helps explain why an apology and a substantial offer did not end the public argument. Compensation could address the individual relationship, but it did not by itself address why the company had made the surname joke or whether the public post should remain online. Android Central reported the apology and offer.
MKBHD tied his partnership to a concrete action
On April 11, Marques Brownlee—known as MKBHD—said he would not work with dbrand until the original tweet was deleted. His criticism was not a demand that dbrand abandon its edgy brand voice altogether. He argued that this particular post caused unnecessary harm and called for a response with reflection, rather than an apology that merely looked like a crisis-management script. Hindustan Times reported his condition and dbrand’s reply.

That boundary mattered because Brownlee was not an unrelated commentator. dbrand’s company timeline says the two began collaborating on the ICONS product line in 2020. A public pause in that relationship put the possibility of losing a valuable brand association on the table. The available reporting does not establish the partnership’s financial value or prove that Brownlee was a particular share of dbrand’s sales; the leverage was the visible relationship itself.
What changed after MKBHD spoke
dbrand said it had left the tweet up at first because deleting it might look like burying the incident. It then acknowledged that the post had gone too far and created a platform for hateful discourse. The company said it had resolved the matter directly with Chitransh and agreed to delete the tweet and be more mindful going forward. The change in position followed Brownlee’s public condition, but it would be too strong to say he alone caused every part of dbrand’s response: criticism had already begun, and the apology and money offer came first.

The sequence is the clearest way to understand what Brownlee achieved. He did not initiate the backlash, the April 10 apology, or the $10,000 offer. He converted his commercial relationship into a public, specific condition—and dbrand agreed to the deletion he had asked for. Contemporary coverage later said Brownlee recognized dbrand’s willingness to learn, while dbrand’s current timeline and product pages continue to show an MKBHD association. That indicates the relationship was not simply ended in April 2024, though a product listing alone cannot establish the precise status of any contract. Gizmochina reported on the later exchange.

There was a real tension between leaving the post visible as a record and removing it to limit further exposure and hateful replies. dbrand initially cited the risk of appearing to bury the incident; Brownlee prioritized taking down the original content. Deletion addressed that visible post, but the public record cited here does not establish whether dbrand changed its social-media policies, how the customer’s product issue was ultimately resolved, or whether the $10,000 was accepted.

The episode is a case of conditional accountability, not a call for permanent cancellation. Brownlee did not demand that dbrand stop making jokes; he made his own participation contingent on removing one post and responding more thoughtfully. It also shows why a creator’s commercial ties can provide a different kind of pressure from ordinary criticism: a creator can make the cost to a brand explicit by pausing work, while leaving room for the company to correct course.
