Squid Game Virtuals can be a terrific one-time outing with the right group—and still be hard to justify as a repeat purchase. Sandbox VR’s full-body, multiplayer take on the Netflix series turns familiar challenges into a lively shared competition. The catch is that the playable session is short beside the premium ticket price: a December 2023 reviewer reported about 30 minutes of gameplay for $50–$55 per person. That is a historical price, not a current quote, so check your local venue before booking.
What is Squid Game Virtuals?
Squid Game Virtuals is a location-based VR attraction made by Sandbox VR in partnership with Netflix. It is designed for groups of up to six, who enter a tracked play space and take on a sequence of mini-games inspired by the series, including “Red Light, Green Light” and “Cross the Glass Bridge.” The series’ recognisable settings and competitive premise are there; its lethal consequences are not. This is an arcade game, not a literal recreation of the show’s violence: players can make mistakes and continue playing.
It is also not a consumer game you download and play at home. You book a session at a participating venue, put on the equipment, and play together in the same physical room while appearing as avatars in the virtual one.

Expect a briefing and equipment setup before the game begins. Players wear a headset, a haptic vest, and motion-tracking sensors on their wrists and ankles. Overhead cameras track movement in the room. Once inside the experience, the group chooses avatars and a team name, plays several mini-games, and works toward a final score or ranking. Some locations offer replay or highlight footage afterward.

The distinction between appointment time and actual play matters. In GeekWire’s December 2023 account, training and setup took roughly 15 minutes, followed by about 30 minutes of gameplay. That is one reviewer’s visit, not a guarantee for every booking: session length and process can vary by location. Ask the venue what your ticket includes.
Why it works so well the first time
The main attraction is not just seeing a familiar TV world in VR. It is seeing your friends there with you. The motion tracking makes body movement part of the game, and the haptic vest adds physical feedback without making the hazards real. You can react to other players, compete, and laugh at what happens in the room—rather than simply watching a scripted sequence unfold.
That shared presence makes the format approachable for many people who are not regular gamers. The challenges are framed as quick mini-games, and the familiar Netflix setting helps explain the premise without a long tutorial. Independent reviews have likewise pointed to player interaction as a highlight: in some moments, you have to respond to the people beside you, not just navigate an impressive virtual backdrop. That is the experience’s strongest argument for a birthday, team event, or night out with friends.

It is still worth separating “easy to start” from “comfortable for everyone.” A headset and vest can feel awkward, motion sickness is a possibility, and not everyone likes competitive games. If someone in your group has mobility, sensory, or other accessibility needs, or is unsure about wearing a headset, contact the location before paying. Age rules, equipment fit, and options to pause or sit out are venue-specific.
Why I may not go back
The ticket buys a short burst of play
The most persuasive reason to hesitate is the price-to-playtime ratio. GeekWire reported paying—or, more precisely, reviewing at a stated typical price of—$50–$55 per person for roughly half an hour of gameplay in December 2023. The reviewer disclosed that admission was complimentary, enjoyed the session, but doubted they would return at that value. Setup and any post-game video can make the outing feel fuller, but they are not the same as additional time playing.
Do not treat that figure as the current price everywhere. Sandbox VR directs customers to local booking pages, and prices, taxes, session details, and availability can change by market. Check the official experience page and your selected location’s booking terms before deciding. A useful comparison is not just the ticket total; it is what your group gets for that amount compared with an escape room, arcade visit, or other activity.

A memorable first run is not necessarily a deep game
The first session has novelty on its side: new equipment, a familiar fictional world, and the fun of seeing friends as avatars. On a second visit, the question is whether the mini-games and scoring give your particular group enough reason to return. Highly competitive friends may want to improve their scores or beat one another. A group that mainly wanted to discover the experience may feel it has already got the best part from one session.
Sandbox encourages players to replay and master the games, but replay value depends on the group, how much the local experience has changed, and whether players care about scoring. Do not assume a specific sequence or identical game catalogue at every venue; ask what is currently included.
There has been new content since the original reviews. In March 2025, Sandbox announced “Repeat Racers,” a mini-game inspired by Squid Game Season 2. The update may give returning players something new, but one added game does not by itself settle whether another ticket is worthwhile. In that announcement, Sandbox also reported more than $30 million in ticket sales since launch; that is a company-reported sales figure, not independent proof of customer satisfaction or value.

Small technical or equipment snags matter more in a short session
Getting suited up takes time, and a headset, vest, and trackers will not be comfortable for every player. GeekWire also described a minor startup glitch during its visit. That single account does not establish how often technical problems happen, but it illustrates the stakes: a delay is more frustrating when the play window is short. Ask the venue what it does if tracking or equipment problems cut into a session.

It is easiest to recommend as a special-occasion activity rather than a repeatable weekly pastime. Consider booking if:
- Your group has several enthusiastic participants who enjoy friendly competition.
- You are celebrating a birthday, organising a team outing, or looking for a distinctive group story.
- Most of the group is curious about VR but does not own a headset.
- You value novelty and shared memories more than getting the longest activity for your money.
- The local ticket price feels acceptable as a premium attraction expense.
Before booking, check the local price, gameplay and appointment length, minimum age, accessibility and motion-sickness options, and cancellation terms. For a small group, ask whether the booking will be private or whether other customers may join. Also ask what happens if someone cannot attend or needs to stop early; those policies should not be assumed to be the same everywhere.

Who may be happier elsewhere?
Skip it, or compare alternatives first, if the outing needs to fill several hours, your group is price-sensitive, or the same players want an activity with substantial repeat play. It may also be a poor fit for someone prone to motion sickness or uncomfortable with head-mounted equipment, and for a group that would rather talk, solve puzzles, or explore at its own pace.

Home VR is not automatically cheaper: compare hardware, software, accessories, and how many people will actually use it. Its advantage is more plausible if you expect to play often; Sandbox VR’s advantage is the managed, group experience in a dedicated venue.
Is it worth it?
As of August 2026, Sandbox VR still lists Squid Game Virtuals on its official site, but local availability and terms need checking. The attraction’s case is strongest for a first visit with a well-matched group: shared avatars, physical reactions, and friendly competition can make a short session memorable. Its weakness is equally clear: a premium ticket for limited gameplay is difficult to defend as a routine repeat purchase unless your group loves chasing scores or the local version has meaningful new content.

My verdict: worth doing once with the right people; not an obvious return visit at any price. Let the local ticket price, actual playtime, and your group’s appetite for replay decide.
