Short answer: As of August 2026, free YouTube background playback in mobile browsers is no longer reliable. Google has effectively closed the loophole that let some users keep YouTube audio playing after minimizing a browser or locking a phone. Google confirmed the change through reporting by Android Authority, while YouTube’s official help pages identify background playback as a Premium benefit.
YouTube Premium is the only dependable, officially supported solution for screen-off listening. Free users may still use Picture-in-Picture (PiP) for eligible content, particularly in the United States, and Brave is worth testing on Android. Safari, Firefox, desktop mode, and other browser tricks should be treated as temporary or device-specific experiments—not permanent replacements for Premium.
What changed in January 2026?
For years, some mobile-browser combinations allowed this sequence:
- Open YouTube in a browser.
- Start a video.
- Minimize the browser or switch apps.
- Lock the phone or turn off the display.
- Continue hearing audio through headphones, a car system, or lock-screen controls.
That behavior became inconsistent across browsers including Samsung Internet, Vivaldi, Brave, Edge, and Firefox-based workflows. The evidence points primarily to a deliberate YouTube-side enforcement change rather than one isolated browser defect. Reports appeared across unrelated browsers, and Google indicated that background playback is intended to be a YouTube Premium benefit.

That does not mean every playback failure has the same cause. Browser bugs, battery management, competing audio, account state, network conditions, and operating-system restrictions can still interrupt playback. But switching from one Chromium-based browser to another is unlikely to restore a permanent free entitlement.
Background playback, PiP, and media controls are different
“YouTube stopped working in the background” can describe several different features:
- Background playback: Audio continues while another app is open or the screen is off.
- Picture-in-Picture: A video remains visible in a floating window while another app is used.
- Lock-screen media controls: Play, pause, skip, or resume controls appear in the phone’s media panel.
- Autoplay: The next video starts after the current video ends.
- Audio-only listening: Video playback continues while the display is off, even though no picture is visible.
A browser may support media controls or PiP while YouTube still prevents screen-off playback. Likewise, one video may continue while autoplay stops at the end. These are separate checks, not proof that the entire browser is broken.

The reliable solution: YouTube Premium
YouTube Premium is the clearly supported answer if you need reliable audio while the phone is locked. YouTube says Premium background playback works in the YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids mobile apps, and in a mobile browser when you are signed in with the Premium account.
Premium supports:
- Screen-off playback.
- Audio while using other apps.
- Lock-screen and notification media controls.
- Background listening in YouTube Music.
- Offline downloads in supported mobile apps.
Enable Premium playback in a mobile browser
- Open
m.youtube.com. - Tap your profile picture.
- Sign in with the Google account that has YouTube Premium.
- Start a normal, eligible video.
- Minimize the browser or lock the device.
- Use the lock-screen or notification media controls.
Premium must be available in your country, the membership must be active, and the correct Google account must be signed in. YouTube says background playback is not available in the Shorts player, and some videos may be unavailable for background playback or offline download. Free option: official Picture-in-Picture
PiP is useful when you want to watch a video while messaging, browsing, or using another app. It is not a replacement for screen-off audio: the video generally remains visible in a floating window, and locking the phone normally stops playback.
iPhone and iPad
YouTube’s documented requirements include iOS 15 or later. Then:
- Open Settings → General → Picture-in-Picture.
- Enable Start PiP Automatically.
- In YouTube, open Settings → Playback.
- Enable Picture-in-Picture.
- Play an eligible video and swipe up or leave the app.
Music videos and other music content remain restricted to Premium. Availability also varies by country. See YouTube’s iOS and iPadOS PiP guidance.
Android
- Open Android Settings.
- Go to Apps → YouTube → Picture-in-picture, or Special app access → Picture-in-picture, depending on the Android version.
- Allow YouTube to use PiP.
- In YouTube, open Settings → Playback.
- Enable PiP and leave the app while an eligible video is playing.
In the United States, non-Premium users can generally use PiP for eligible non-music content. That rule should not be generalized to every country. Consult YouTube’s Android PiP documentation for current regional and content limitations.
Free browser options: what is worth trying?
Brave
Brave is the most credible browser experiment because Brave has publicly documented improved YouTube PiP and background playback for Android in version 1.87 and later, including lock-screen media controls. Start with the current version from Brave’s official download page.

However, this is not an official free YouTube Premium entitlement. Brave’s feature can change or fail after a YouTube, browser, Android, or iOS update. Community reports document inconsistent behavior, especially on iOS. Android users are more likely to find it useful, but it should still be treated as a version-sensitive experiment.

Firefox for Android supports background media and PiP in general, including notification media controls. That describes Firefox’s media capabilities—not a guarantee that YouTube will permit free background playback.
Reports in 2026 indicate that YouTube background playback stopped working for some Firefox Android users after the enforcement change. Extensions and user scripts may restore behavior temporarily, but they require trust, maintenance, and sometimes desktop-mode workarounds. Do not treat Firefox as a dependable free YouTube solution.
Safari on iPhone
The old Safari method—request the desktop site, start playback, lock the screen, and resume from the lock screen—is no longer reliable. Occasional success may depend on the iOS version, whether playback entered native PiP, the tab’s state, and whether YouTube’s media session survived the lock.
Safari desktop mode is therefore an intermittent, unsupported experiment, not a recommendation for reliable listening.

Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet, and Vivaldi
These browsers may behave differently for a particular account or update, but reports covering multiple browsers indicate that changing between them is not a durable solution. A different browser can preserve PiP while failing at screen lock, or play one video but stop before autoplay begins.
Troubleshooting that is still worthwhile
If you have YouTube Premium
- Confirm that the correct Google account is signed in.
- Check that the membership is active and recognized.
- Update YouTube or your browser.
- Check YouTube’s Background Play setting.
- Test a normal long-form video rather than a Short or restricted music item.
- Make sure another app, navigation prompt, call, or media session is not taking audio focus.
- Allow background data for YouTube or the browser.
- Reduce aggressive battery optimization for the app or browser.
- Allow notifications and media controls.
- Restart the app and reboot the phone.
- Test on both Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Sign out and back in if Premium status is missing.
YouTube’s official troubleshooting guidance covers membership status, account sign-in, background settings, updates, background data, competing audio, network conditions, and notifications.
If you are a free user
First decide whether you need PiP or screen-off audio. If PiP is enough, configure the official YouTube app and test an eligible non-music video. If the requirement is uninterrupted audio with the display locked, repeated browser troubleshooting is unlikely to produce a stable result in 2026.

- Changing the user agent as a permanent fix.
- Private tabs or desktop-site mode as a guaranteed solution.
- Unmaintained extensions or scripts copied from forums.
- Modified YouTube APKs from unknown websites.
- Apps requesting Google credentials outside Google’s official sign-in flow.
- Assuming ad blocking and background playback are the same feature.
- Assuming a method that works on Android will work on iPhone.
- Unofficial downloaders when the only goal is background listening.
Browser extensions and scripts can also interfere with the page visibility events or media session that playback requires. Modified apps add security, privacy, update, and account risks.
Which option should you choose?

If you only want occasional multitasking with ordinary, non-music videos, free PiP may be sufficient. If you specifically need playlists, lock-screen audio, and reliable playback across devices, Premium is the practical answer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did YouTube permanently remove free mobile-browser background playback?
The safest description is that it has been effectively blocked or made unreliable for free users. It may still work intermittently for particular browsers, accounts, regions, or versions, but no free browser method should be treated as permanent.
Does YouTube Premium work in a mobile browser?
Yes. Sign in at m.youtube.com with the Google account that has Premium, start an eligible video, and minimize the browser or lock the device.
Why does one video play but autoplay fail?
YouTube applies separate checks to the current video, autoplay, content type, and account or regional rollout. A workaround that preserves one playback session may not permit the next video to start.

Is this different on Android and iPhone?
Yes. Android browsers and battery controls differ from iOS, and iOS browsers are subject to Apple’s system web-engine rules. A method working on Android cannot be assumed to work on an iPhone.
The Bottom Line
If reliable YouTube audio with the screen locked is the requirement, YouTube Premium is the only clearly supported answer in 2026. Free PiP remains useful for eligible video multitasking, while Brave and other browser workarounds may be worth experimenting with but cannot be promised as durable.
