Corus Entertainment did not shut down all of its children’s channels. Effective September 1, 2025, it ceased distributing five Canadian specialty networks: ABC Spark, Nickelodeon, La Chaîne Disney, Disney XD and Disney Junior.
The cuts were influenced by cord-cutting, changing viewing habits and the weaker economics of traditional specialty television. But Corus’s debt burden, liquidity pressure and broader portfolio-reduction strategy were just as important. This was a selective contraction of Canadian children’s television—not the disappearance of kids’ programming or the global Disney and Nickelodeon brands.
The five channels that closed
Corus’s 2025 corporate filings identify five networks whose Canadian distribution ended on September 1, 2025:

“Ceased distribution” is the most precise description. It means Corus stopped carrying and distributing these Canadian specialty services. It does not mean that Disney or Nickelodeon disappeared worldwide, that every related programme vanished, or that all five brands were globally discontinued. Corus’s 2025 Annual Information Form places the decision within a reduction of the company’s cost base and television-channel portfolio.

The Canadian regulatory consequences were separate. The CRTC later revoked the Canadian broadcasting licences for Nickelodeon and La Chaîne Disney in Decision 2025-325 and Decision 2025-327. Those decisions concern Canadian licences, not the survival of the international brands.
Corus still has major kids’ brands
The shutdown was selective. Corus’s 2026 public materials continued to identify or promote:
- YTV
- Treehouse
- Cartoon Network/Télétoon
- Disney Channel
That last point matters: Disney Channel continued operating even though Disney Junior, Disney XD and La Chaîne Disney were among the five services discontinued. Corus also continued positioning its linear networks alongside streaming products such as TELETOON+ and STACKTV.
The surviving lineup should not be treated as guaranteed indefinitely. Corus was still undergoing financial restructuring, so its portfolio could change. But the available 2026 materials do not support the claim that Corus eliminated its entire children’s-TV business.

Was streaming the cause?
Streaming is part of the explanation, but “streaming killed the channels” is too simple.
Traditional specialty television has been weakened by cord-cutting, fragmented audiences and the shift from scheduled channels to on-demand viewing. Children and families can increasingly find programmes through services controlled by major rights holders, general streaming platforms and digital video services. That makes it harder for a large bundle of linear channels to justify its carriage, programming and advertising costs.
Corus had already adapted to that change. It launched TELETOON+ in 2022 as a Canadian subscription service focused on kids and family programming. It has also promoted STACKTV as a way to access Corus channels live and on demand.
However, Corus’s own public record points to a wider corporate problem. The company was reducing its channel portfolio while carrying substantial debt, facing a difficult conventional-TV market and dealing with programming and distribution economics. Streaming weakened the old model; financial distress made portfolio cuts more urgent and attractive.

- Age-appropriate listening: Requested songs from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, or Pandora are filtered for explicit lyrics. Amazon Kids+ provides access to ad-free podcasts from Wondery Kids & Family and ad-free radio stations from iHeart Radio Family.
The debt crisis behind the channel cuts
Corus’s financial position gives the closures a different meaning from a routine programming adjustment. In its fiscal 2026 third-quarter results, the company reported net debt equal to 8.20 times segment profit as of May 31, 2026, compared with 6.01 times as of August 31, 2025. The figures are reported in Corus’s fiscal 2026 results.
Corus also received covenant waivers and liquidity support while pursuing a recapitalization. A June 2026 company update said the waiver period had been extended to September 1, 2026.
The proposed recapitalization presented to the CRTC involved approximately C$500 million in debt forgiveness in exchange for lenders receiving 99% ownership of a new parent company. The proposal was part of a court-supervised and regulatory process; it should not be confused with a claim that Corus had formally declared bankruptcy.
In that context, cutting several channels can be understood as portfolio simplification: fewer services to program, distribute and support, with resources concentrated on brands and platforms the company considered strategically more valuable.

Why were some channels retained?
There is no published formula proving exactly why Corus retained one kids’ channel and closed another. It would be speculative to say that any single factor determined the outcome.
Possible considerations include brand recognition in Canada, the age groups served, advertising and carriage potential, programming-rights costs, regulatory value and the ability to consolidate content across fewer networks and streaming products. YTV and Treehouse have long-standing Canadian identities, while Cartoon Network/Télétoon connects with Corus’s Warner Bros. Discovery-related programming strategy.
Disney Channel’s continued presence also shows why the decision should not be reduced to a simple Disney-versus-streaming story. Different services can have different contracts, audiences, economics and strategic value.

There is no single replacement service for every closed channel. A channel schedule, a programme catalogue and a streaming library are different things, and rights can change independently.

- Disney-related programming: Some titles may be available through Disney-owned services or other Canadian distributors, subject to current Canadian rights. The disappearance of Disney Junior, Disney XD or La Chaîne Disney does not guarantee that every former programme is available on Disney+.
- Nickelodeon-related programming: Some titles may appear through Paramount’s Canadian streaming offerings, but availability is title-specific and can change as licences expire or move.
- Corus and Cartoon Network programming: Cartoon Network/Télétoon and TELETOON+ remain relevant places to look for programming associated with Corus’s Warner Bros. Discovery, Cartoon Network, DC and animation catalogue, where rights permit.
- STACKTV: This is a broader live-TV and on-demand Corus bundle rather than a one-for-one replacement for the five closed networks.
- French-language viewing: Corus’s Vivéo is a French-language streaming option. Corus described it in June 2026 as costing C$4.99 per month through Prime Video Add-on Subscriptions, with more than 200 series and films and nearly 2,000 hours of content. It is not a direct replacement for every closed kids’ channel.
Corus originally identified Amazon Prime Video Channels, Bell Fibe TV, Virgin Plus and RiverTV as distribution routes for TELETOON+. Those arrangements and the service’s 2022 launch price of C$5.99 per month should not be assumed to be current in 2026.
What to check before subscribing
For families replacing a particular channel, the practical question is not simply “what replaces it?” Check the exact title and:
- Whether it is currently available in Canada.
- Whether the English or French version is offered.
- Whether the programme is live, on demand or available only as selected seasons.
- Whether it is included in an existing subscription or requires an add-on.
- Whether the service offers suitable profiles and parental controls.
- Whether the catalogue is ad-supported or commercial-free.
- Whether the subscription can be cancelled monthly.
A programme may remain available on demand after leaving a linear channel, return later under a different licence or disappear entirely for a period. Canadian rights also differ from U.S. rights, and English and French rights may be negotiated separately.

The reduction from a larger collection of specialty services to a smaller group of brands reflects a broader shift in how children’s television is packaged.
Linear channels offer scheduled discovery and a predictable place for parents to find age-specific programming. Streaming offers convenience and deeper on-demand libraries, but it fragments access across services and makes catalogues less stable. A show can be available today, move to another platform tomorrow and remain unavailable in a particular language or territory.
For broadcasters, fewer channels may reduce costs and concentrate audiences. For viewers, the trade-off is less choice within the traditional television bundle and more dependence on rights negotiations between broadcasters, studios and streaming platforms.
