Short version: Plex has not introduced one blanket price increase. It has raised the price of a new U.S. Lifetime Plex Pass to $749.99, effective July 1, 2026, and has begun requiring payment for remote playback of personal video libraries in newer app experiences. Local playback remains free, and existing Lifetime Plex Pass owners retain their benefits.
Whether you need to pay depends mainly on three things: where you watch, who owns the server, and which Plex features you use.
What changed in Plex?
Plex’s 2026 changes are best understood as separate policy and pricing changes rather than a single “Plex now costs $750” announcement.

The price took effect at 12:01 a.m. UTC on July 1, 2026, rising from the previously advertised $249.99. That is a $500 increase, or approximately 200% over the former price; the new price is roughly three times as high.
- Remote playback of personal video libraries is becoming a paid feature in newer apps. Depending on the arrangement, the server administrator needs Plex Pass or the remote viewer needs Remote Watch Pass.
- The rollout is gradual. The requirement has appeared in newer mobile and TV app experiences, with Roku affected before some other platforms and Fire TV beginning its rollout in April 2026. Timing depends on the device and app version.
Plex says the Lifetime change applies to new purchases. Existing Lifetime Plex Pass subscribers are grandfathered into their existing benefits, and Plex said monthly and annual Plex Pass pricing was not changed by that specific Lifetime announcement. See Plex’s official pricing announcement.

Will you personally have to pay?
Use this distinction first: local playback means watching while your device is on the same local network as the Plex Media Server. Remote playback means streaming over the internet while away from that network.

This means a shared server does not automatically create a bill for every viewer. If the server administrator holds Plex Pass, authorized users may continue to stream remotely without each buying Remote Watch Pass. The exact result can vary by account arrangement, app, and platform as Plex completes its rollout.
How much does Plex cost in the U.S.?
The following figures are U.S. price signals identified on Plex’s plan pages. Taxes, currency conversion, regional pricing, and app-store billing can change the amount shown at checkout.

Plex’s indexed plan information also showed an introductory Remote Watch Pass price of $1.99 monthly or $19.99 annually before June 1, 2026. Confirm the live amount on Plex’s plans page before purchasing.

Remote Watch Pass
Remote Watch Pass is the lower-cost option for people who only need to stream personal video remotely. Plex describes it as allowing the account holder to watch personal content remotely from servers they can access, including their own server or another person’s server.

It does not mean “cheap Plex Pass.” It does not include the wider Plex Pass feature set, including:
- Hardware transcoding
- Downloads for offline viewing
- Skip Intro or Skip Credits
- DVR and live-TV recording
- Premium Plexamp features
- Other Plex Pass-only media-management and customization features
Plex also says Remote Watch Pass cannot currently be gifted to another Plex account.
Plex Pass
Plex Pass is the more relevant choice for server owners and power users. Depending on the current plan and platform, its benefits include:
- Remote streaming for users of the server
- Hardware-accelerated transcoding
- Downloads for offline viewing
- Skip Intro and Skip Credits
- DVR and live-TV recording with a compatible tuner and antenna
- Premium Plexamp features
- Additional media-management and customization tools
Plex Pass does not remove advertising from Plex’s free, ad-supported Movies & Shows or Live TV services, nor does it unlock an additional premium catalog for those services. It primarily adds features around your own media and Plex’s premium apps. Plex’s Plex Pass feature overview explains the distinction.
What remains free?
Plex has not become entirely paywalled. In general, you can still use the free Plex Media Server and watch personal media locally without a subscription. Plex’s separate ad-supported Movies & Shows and Live TV services also remain available with their own limitations and advertising.

Music and photo access have different treatment from remote personal-video playback. Dedicated Plexamp music streaming and Plex Photos should not be described as universally subject to the same paywall. For the current feature boundaries, consult Plex’s free-versus-paid guide.
Why the Lifetime price is now difficult to justify
At $749.99, Lifetime Plex Pass is no longer an automatic bargain. Using the stated U.S. prices:
- Compared with $69.99 annual billing, $749.99 equals approximately 10.7 years of Plex Pass.
- Compared with $6.99 monthly billing, it equals approximately 107.3 months, or about 8.9 years.
Those are simple break-even calculations, not guarantees. Subscription prices, promotions, taxes, regional pricing, feature policies, and Plex’s product direction can change. A Lifetime purchase makes the most sense only if you expect to use Plex for roughly a decade, strongly prefer avoiding recurring payments, and accept the risk that your needs or the service may change.
There is no reason to use the old $249.99 price as a current “buy before the deadline” argument: that deadline passed on July 1, 2026.
What to do in common situations
If you only watch at home
- Confirm that the playback device is on the same local network as the server.
- Continue using Plex for local personal-media playback without paying.
- Do not buy Plex Pass merely to watch your own files locally.
- Consider Plex Pass only if you want Downloads, DVR, hardware transcoding, Skip Intro, or another premium feature.
If you watch remotely from a friend’s server
- Ask whether the server administrator’s Plex account has an active Plex Pass.
- If it does, remote streaming may continue without your own Remote Watch Pass.
- If it does not, Remote Watch Pass is the cheaper option if remote video is all you need.
- If you also need Downloads, transcoding, DVR, Skip Intro, or Plexamp features, compare full Plex Pass instead of assuming the two products are interchangeable.
If you own the server and share it
- Check which Plex account administers the server.
- Confirm that this account—not a different household account—holds the active Plex Pass.
- Make sure the intended viewers remain authorized to access the shared libraries.
- Test remote playback on the actual devices your users rely on.
For a household or group, one server-owner Plex Pass can be less expensive than requiring every remote viewer to buy Remote Watch Pass. Plex’s rollout is app- and platform-dependent, so do not assume every legacy or third-party client behaves identically.

If you already own Lifetime Plex Pass
The July 2026 price increase does not require existing Lifetime holders to repurchase. Plex says they retain their Plex Pass benefits. Still, verify the subscription status of the correct Plex account rather than relying only on an old receipt or a third-party app-store purchase history. Plex discussed this distinction in its community announcement.
If you paid for a one-time mobile activation
A past Android or iOS mobile activation is not the same as Lifetime Plex Pass. Plex offers an extended Remote Watch Pass trial to some users with qualifying legacy mobile activation purchases, but eligibility depends on details such as the original platform, the same app-store account, starting the subscription on that platform, and whether Remote Watch Pass has previously been used. Before purchasing anything, check the setup. A new payment prompt can result from the new policy, but it can also reflect an account or server problem.
- Verify the signed-in account on the playback device.
- Identify the server administrator account and confirm whether that account has active Plex Pass.
- Check subscription status in the Plex account’s subscription or payment area.
- Confirm the playback is actually remote. A device that has moved to a guest network, cellular connection, or different VLAN may no longer be considered local.
- Update the Plex app and server, then test again.
- Check the sharing permissions for the affected user and library.
- Consult Plex’s current remote-playback requirements for the specific device and app version.
If you only watch your own files, owning the media does not exempt remote delivery from Plex’s policy. Plex distinguishes between ownership of the files and use of its internet-based remote playback feature.
What about VPNs or old apps?
A VPN can sometimes place a remote device on a home network, but it is not a direct, universally supported replacement for Plex remote playback. It adds setup, maintenance, device-compatibility, bandwidth, and security responsibilities. It also does not provide Plex features such as Downloads, DVR, hardware transcoding, or account-based sharing.

Similarly, relying on an old Plex app is not a durable solution. Plex is extending the requirement through updated app experiences and platforms, and legacy behavior may change or become unsupported. The safer approach is to choose the plan—or an alternative media server—that matches your actual use.
Should you switch to Jellyfin or Emby?
Jellyfin and Emby are alternatives for people willing to run a different self-hosted media-server platform. Jellyfin is particularly attractive to technically capable users who want an open-source ecosystem. Emby offers another self-hosted platform with its own apps and premium options.
Switching is not cost-free in practical terms. You may need to rebuild libraries, configure remote access, replace apps on TVs and streaming devices, and accept different transcoding behavior or integrations. Plex may still be preferable if its established device support, account-sharing workflow, discovery features, and ecosystem save you more time than the subscription costs.

- Choose free Plex if you watch locally and do not need premium features.
- Choose Remote Watch Pass if you only need remote personal-video playback and the server owner does not have Plex Pass.
- Choose monthly or annual Plex Pass if you own and share a server, need hardware transcoding, want Downloads or DVR, or use Skip Intro and premium Plexamp features.
- Consider Lifetime Plex Pass cautiously if you expect nearly a decade of use, want to avoid recurring billing, and have confirmed the current checkout price and terms.
The most important question is not “Is Plex free or paid?” It is: which part of Plex are you using, and which account should carry the cost? Local users can generally remain free. Remote viewers should first ask whether the server owner has Plex Pass. Remote Watch Pass is the budget solution for remote video alone, while Plex Pass is the better fit for server owners and power users.
