Critterz is a real feature-length animated film project connected to OpenAI, but it is not accurately described as a movie made entirely by artificial intelligence. It is better understood as a human-led production that uses generative AI across parts of the filmmaking pipeline—an experiment in whether a small team can make feature animation faster and for substantially less money.
As of August 18, 2026, first-look footage had been presented to buyers at the Cannes 2026 film market. The film did not receive the anticipated full festival premiere, and reporting placed its release target in the first quarter of 2027. That is a target, not a confirmed theatrical release date.
What is Critterz?
Critterz is a family animated adventure that grew out of a short film created in 2023 by Chad Nelson, an OpenAI creative strategist. The feature follows an anxious but brave woodland creature who joins a group of eccentric outcasts on a quest to find her missing brother.

The feature is an expansion of the original short rather than evidence that a generative model independently conceived and produced a complete movie. Its commercial positioning is that of a mainstream family film, with a conventional story, characters, screenplay, direction, production supervision and sales strategy.
Screen Daily reported that AGC International is handling worldwide sales.
Who is making the film?

This structure matters. OpenAI is central because its tools, computing resources and personnel are reportedly involved, but the available reporting does not establish OpenAI as the film’s conventional studio, distributor or sole producer. The project is being made through a network of filmmakers, production companies, writers, technical specialists and a sales company.
Where does AI enter the production?
Coverage has variously called Critterz “AI-made,” “AI-powered” and “AI-assisted.” Those phrases can imply very different things. The most accurate description supported by the available information is human-led, AI-assisted feature animation.
Generative systems may contribute to:
- concept development and visual exploration;
- character, setting and environment design;
- storyboards and previsualization;
- image generation and animation assistance;
- iterative shot development;
- motion or video-generation experiments; and
- rapid testing of visual ideas before more expensive production work.
They do not remove the need for people to write and revise the screenplay, direct performances, select and correct outputs, maintain continuity, edit scenes, record or manage voices, design sound, composite shots, supervise production and resolve legal and delivery requirements.
A feature-length film also needs decisions that current generative tools do not reliably make on their own: what a character wants, how an emotional beat should build, where a scene takes place, how an object moves from shot to shot, and whether the final sequence works for an audience. Attractive individual images are not the same as a coherent feature.
The reported budget and schedule
Earlier reporting described a production budget of less than $30 million and an intended production period of roughly nine months. Those figures should be treated as reported claims from the project’s coverage, not independently audited results.
The nine-month figure may describe an AI-focused production phase rather than the entire life of the film. Development, financing, writing, casting, voice recording, editing, sound, legal review, insurance, delivery, sales and marketing may not be included. Similarly, a sub-$30-million production budget is not the same as the total cost of releasing and marketing a family film worldwide.
The original schedule is also harder to evaluate now that the expected release has shifted. A lower production cost can be commercially valuable, but it does not automatically produce a profitable film. The meaningful comparison is the complete cost and revenue potential of Critterz against comparable independently financed family animation—not simply against the budgets of the largest studio productions.
What happened at Cannes in 2026?
The Cannes update is important because some earlier descriptions suggested a 2026 release or premiere.
At the Cannes 2026 film market, AGC reportedly presented first-look footage to studios, streamers and international distributors. However, Critterz did not receive the anticipated full festival premiere. A market presentation is primarily a sales and industry event; it is not the same as a public festival debut or theatrical launch.
Later reporting said the team was targeting a first-quarter 2027 release. No confirmed theatrical release date is established by the available material.

Did Sora disruption affect the project?
Later coverage said changes to, or the shutdown of, OpenAI’s Sora tool forced the production team to rebuild parts of its workflow. Director Nik Kleverov reportedly presented the disruption as evidence that filmmakers need durable production systems rather than dependence on one model or vendor.
The available reporting does not establish the exact percentage of footage generated with Sora, how many completed shots became unusable, the precise cost or schedule impact, or whether the final film continues to use OpenAI models. It would therefore be misleading to say that Sora alone caused the Cannes delay.
The episode does illustrate a genuine production risk. A feature pipeline may run for years while models, APIs, prices, usage limits, terms of service and output behavior change. A professional workflow needs exportable assets, version records, reproducible settings, provenance documentation and contractual continuity.
Is Critterz the first AI feature film?
That depends on what “first” means. It could refer to the first feature using generative image tools, the first mainstream family film built around an AI-assisted pipeline, the first backed by a major AI company, or the first completed and publicly released feature. Those are separate claims.
The safer description is that Critterz is one of the earliest high-profile mainstream feature projects built around an AI-assisted production pipeline. Calling it the first AI-generated feature without defining the category would overstate what has been established.
Copyright, authorship and rights
AI involvement creates a chain-of-title problem as well as a creative one. A production must be able to identify who owns the screenplay, characters, designs and other underlying material, and how AI-generated or AI-modified frames fit into that ownership chain.
Important questions include:
- How much human selection, editing, composition and transformation shaped the final images?
- Are prompts, source assets, revisions and approvals documented?
- Were training-data, style, likeness and voice concerns reviewed?
- Do AI suppliers provide appropriate contractual protections or indemnities?
- Can the production obtain errors-and-omissions insurance and distribute the film internationally?
- How will AI participation be disclosed in credits and publicity?
It is too broad to say that AI-generated work cannot be copyrighted everywhere. Copyright treatment varies by jurisdiction and depends on the nature and extent of human authorship. The practical issue for a film is whether its rights, permissions and human contributions are sufficiently documented for financiers, insurers, distributors and audiences.

AI-assisted production could allow smaller teams to explore more ideas, produce visual development more quickly and attempt projects that were previously unaffordable. Directors may be able to test staging and design concepts earlier, while independent producers may gain access to tools that once required large departments.

Fewer entry-level assignments in storyboarding, design, cleanup or asset production could make it harder for new artists to enter the industry. Artists may face pressure to deliver more work for lower fees, while questions remain about consent and compensation for training data, likenesses and recognizable styles.
Lower headcount does not necessarily mean lower total labor demand. Work may shift toward directors, technical artists, compositors, editors, pipeline specialists, continuity supervisors, rights-management staff and people responsible for correcting and integrating generated material. Whether that shift creates good, stable jobs—or concentrates value with a few vendors—will depend on production practices and labor agreements.
How should the project’s success be judged?
Critterz will be commercially meaningful only if it passes ordinary film-industry tests, not merely technical demonstrations.
- Completion: Is there a finished feature rather than only promotional or first-look footage?
- Continuity: Can characters, lighting, geography, props and motion remain consistent across a feature?
- Story and performance: Does the film sustain emotional engagement for its intended family audience?
- Cost accounting: Does the reported budget include post-production, legal work, insurance, delivery and marketing?
- Distribution: Will a theatrical, streaming or international buyer commit to the completed film?
- Audience response: Will families accept the visual style and the film’s perceived relationship to AI?
- Repeatability: Can another team reproduce the economics, or did the project depend on unusual expertise and bespoke experimentation?
- Revenue: Does the film remain profitable after sales costs, marketing and distribution expenses?
Its biggest test is therefore not whether AI can generate an impressive frame. It is whether AI can help a human team maintain story quality, visual consistency, rights clearance and audience value at a lower total cost.
What Critterz really represents
The project is best viewed as a proof-of-production experiment. OpenAI appears to be using a real commercial film to demonstrate that generative tools can reorganize visual development and animation work, shorten parts of the schedule and allow a smaller team to pursue feature-scale ambitions.
That is a consequential proposition, but it remains unproven. The film’s eventual completion, distribution, audience reception and financial performance will matter more than claims that it was “made by AI.” For now, Critterz shows that generative systems can become part of a professional filmmaking pipeline—and that the human, legal, technical and commercial work around those systems remains substantial.
