Some users say AI-generated sexual content has made compulsive pornography habits harder to interrupt. In an August 10, 2025 report, Futurism described a 26-year-old man identified as Kyle, who said his use escalated from an AI-generated Instagram Reel to increasingly unrealistic material and began affecting his enjoyment of sex with his partner. That is a concerning personal account—not proof that AI pornography causes addiction, brain damage, or the same effects for everyone.
What “gooning” means—and what it does not
“Gooning” is internet slang for prolonged masturbation or pornography sessions, often involving edging, extended arousal, or binge-like consumption. A “gooner” is a self-description or online identity, not a clinical category. Reports about gooners tend to draw on personal accounts and online communities, not representative surveys.
The headline phrase “brains hijacked” captures how powerless some people say they feel. It should not be read as a demonstrated neurological finding. The reporting behind it does not show that AI pornography permanently changes the brain or that people who use it will develop a disorder.
What Kyle said happened
Futurism reported on an interview Kyle gave to Wired. According to that account, Kyle encountered an AI-generated sexualized image in an Instagram Reel, then sought increasingly unrealistic and taboo material. He said ordinary pornography stopped producing the same response, and that he experienced less pleasure during sex with his partner. He joined NoFap and tried to reduce or stop his use. Other people posting in NoFap communities reportedly described AI content as unusually difficult to avoid because it could be tailored to their preferences.

These are attributed self-reports. They do not establish how common the experience is, whether AI was the cause rather than one factor in an existing pattern, or whether any person described meets diagnostic criteria. NoFap is a community and abstinence approach, not proof of a clinical diagnosis or a validated treatment.
Why AI content could feel different
Generative tools can change the experience of seeking sexual content. Rather than choosing from a fixed catalogue, a user may be able to request variations, modify an image, build a recurring character, or interact with an erotic chatbot. That can mean more novelty, personalization, and immediacy. A person can also adjust prompts step by step toward material that is more specific or extreme for them.
A 2026 content analysis of 98 AI-pornography platforms documented a varied mix of capabilities: 67.3% supported original image content, 23.5% original video generation, 40.8% modification of existing content, and 40.8% erotic AI companions. These figures describe features in the study’s platform sample—not how many people use them, whether users become compulsive, or whether the tools cause harm. The study also found a shifting marketplace: by September 18, 2025, 66.3% of the sampled sites remained active, 6.1% had changed domains, and 27.6% no longer existed.

Personalization and interaction could make an existing habit more compelling for some people, but that is a plausible mechanism, not a settled causal finding. The evidence does not show that every user escalates, that generated material is inherently more extreme than human-made pornography, or that AI has a uniform effect. Some users may find synthetic content less compelling.

What research can—and cannot—say
It helps to separate three kinds of evidence:
- Personal accounts: The Futurism story reports what Kyle and people in online communities said they experienced. Such accounts can surface real problems, but they cannot measure prevalence or prove cause and effect.
- Platform analysis: The study of 98 services documents what sampled sites offered and how their governance materials varied. It does not track users over time or measure addiction.
- Online discussion: A quantitative analysis of Reddit posts describes how people talk about AI-generated stories, chatbots, images, videos, and altered content. Reddit is self-selected; those posts cannot establish how typical a reported experience is.
At present, the available evidence here does not establish the scale of AI-specific compulsive use, a distinct clinical condition, or a uniquely AI-driven neurological effect. The more careful conclusion is that some users report loss of control and consequences, while AI features may make sexual content more customizable and continuously available. Whether—and for whom—that changes patterns of use requires more research.

The Reddit-post analysis is useful for understanding user discourse, not estimating population rates.
Is “AI smut addiction” a diagnosis?
No. “AI smut addiction” is not an established medical diagnosis, and “porn addiction” is a contested label. The more appropriate clinical framework for persistent, difficult-to-control sexual behavior that causes significant impairment or distress is compulsive sexual behavior disorder. That does not mean a person’s frequency of use, guilt, religious conflict, relationship disagreement, or disapproval of their own sexual interests automatically indicates a disorder.
Only a qualified professional can assess an individual. The people in the report should not be diagnosed from a story, and readers should not diagnose themselves from a checklist or headline. A reported reduction in partnered sexual pleasure, for example, may have several possible causes; one person’s account does not show that AI pornography causes sexual dysfunction generally.

Separate risks: consent, privacy, and platform governance
Compulsive use is only one concern. AI tools can also be used to sexualize identifiable people without their consent, create deepfake pornography, or alter existing images. Generated content is not automatically harmless simply because it is synthetic: a fictional character differs from a sexualized impersonation of a real person. Privacy matters too, since prompts, uploaded images, saved preferences, and chat histories may reveal intimate information.
The platform study found variation in rules, enforcement, privacy practices, and how services assign responsibility. A platform’s terms alone cannot guarantee that harmful material will not be generated or shared. The existence of moderation also does not mean every service applies it consistently. Age-safety failures, unclear rights over source material, and exploitation of creators are additional concerns, though the platform analysis does not quantify their prevalence.

When use may be becoming a problem
Frequency alone does not establish harm. More useful questions are whether someone repeatedly tries and fails to cut back, spends substantially more time than intended, loses sleep or neglects work and relationships, continues despite clear consequences, or relies on pornography mainly to escape distress. Conflict with a partner can matter, but disagreement about boundaries is not by itself proof of pathology.
For someone concerned about their own use, practical steps can include:
- Notice the pattern. For a short period, record when use happens, how long it lasts, and what tends to precede it—such as boredom, stress, loneliness, or late-night phone use.
- Reduce easy cues and access. Remove saved prompts, accounts, image libraries, and automatic recommendations that keep restarting a session. Consider screen-time limits, blocking tools, or keeping devices out of the bedroom.
- Address what the habit may be serving. Sleep problems, isolation, anxiety, and relationship strain can be part of the picture. Changing access alone may not address those pressures.
- Seek nonjudgmental support. A licensed mental-health professional familiar with compulsive sexual behavior can help assess what is happening without presuming a diagnosis. Shame and claims of permanent damage are not useful evidence-based conclusions; a lapse does not prove that someone is beyond help.
If sexual content depicts a real person without consent, do not download or share it. Report it to the relevant platform and consider seeking legal or victim-support advice.

The narrowest defensible conclusion
AI can offer sexual content that is more personalized, interactive, and quickly varied than a static catalogue. Some people say those features have made their pornography habits harder to control and have affected their relationships or partnered sex. Those reports deserve attention, but the available evidence does not establish a new “AI smut addiction,” prove that AI hijacks the brain, or show how widespread the problem is. The story is a reason to ask better questions—not to mistake a headline, a platform feature, or one person’s experience for a diagnosis or a proven general effect.
