Samsung introduced “Over the Horizon 2024”, a new interpretation of its long-running Galaxy signature sound, for the Galaxy S24 generation. The version combines orchestral instrumentation with traditional Korean gugak influences and was preloaded on the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra according to contemporary reporting.
Samsung announced the release on January 23, 2024, ahead of the phones’ reported January 31 retail availability. It is best understood as a new arrangement of an established theme—not a completely new melody created exclusively for the S24.
What makes the Galaxy S24 version different?
The 2024 arrangement was created around Samsung’s “Sound from Nature” concept. Rather than presenting “Over the Horizon” as a generic stock ringtone, the production places the familiar Galaxy theme in a larger orchestral setting while bringing in sounds associated with traditional Korean music.
Samsung describes the result as a meeting of tradition, modernity, and the future. Music director Won Il said the arrangement uses musical expressions beyond a simple pentatonic framework, including sevenths and chromatic scales. Those details should be treated as Samsung’s description of the musical approach, rather than as an independent genre classification.

The “orchestral” label is therefore accurate but incomplete. The defining feature is the combination of classical instruments and gugak instruments and performance practices.
Samsung’s behind-the-scenes account presents the production as another stage in the continuing evolution of the Galaxy sound.
Who performed and produced it?
- Seoul National University Gugak Orchestra: the performing ensemble central to the recording.
- Won Il, also credited as IL WON: music director and conductor. Samsung also notes his association with overseeing music for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
- Byeong Joon Hwang: sound director responsible for the production and fine-tuning/mastering work described by Samsung.
Samsung says the recording was made in Dolby Atmos. That describes the reported recording and production process; it does not necessarily mean the short ringtone clip plays from a phone speaker as a full multichannel Atmos experience.

Which Galaxy phones include it?
Contemporary reporting identified the preloaded tone on these standard S24-series models:
- Galaxy S24
- Galaxy S24+
- Galaxy S24 Ultra
This evidence should not automatically be extended to every device with “S24” in its name, including the Galaxy S24 FE. Preset ringtone availability can also vary by region, exact model, carrier, and software configuration. Samsung specifically warns that available ringtones may differ by carrier. See its current ringtone support guidance before assuming that every international variant has the same list.
The phones’ reported store availability was January 31, 2024, while Samsung’s announcement of the 2024 sound was dated January 23. Those are separate milestones: the announcement date does not mean every retail unit was already available that day.

How to select the ringtone
On a compatible Galaxy phone, Samsung’s general path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Swipe through the available sounds.
- Tap a tone to preview it.
- Leave the desired tone selected and tap Back.
Labels and menu placement may differ slightly with the One UI version, language, carrier customization, or device model. Look under Ringtone, not Notifications or System sounds.
Assigning a tone to one contact
- Open Contacts and select the person.
- Tap the three-dot More options menu.
- Choose Change ringtone/vibration.
- Select a preset or add a local audio file.
Samsung documents this contact-specific route in its sound and notification support material.

Why might the tone be missing or inaudible?
If “Over the Horizon 2024” does not appear, the phone may have a different regional or carrier firmware configuration, or a later software update may have changed the visible ringtone list. Its presence on one S24 model is not proof that it is installed on every variant.
If it is selected but cannot be heard, check the following:
- The phone is not set to Mute or Vibrate.
- The ringtone-volume slider is turned up.
- Do Not Disturb or a custom Mode is not suppressing calls.
- A contact-specific ringtone has not overridden the general setting.
- The calling app is not using its own sound or notification controls.

Can older Galaxy phones use it?
There is an important difference between a tone being built into a phone’s firmware and an audio file being usable as a custom ringtone.
Samsung allows Galaxy users to add a locally stored audio file as a ringtone. That means an older Galaxy phone may be able to use a legitimately obtained, compatible copy of the sound. It does not mean Samsung officially made the S24 system tone available on every older model, nor does it guarantee that the original preset will appear after a software update.
Samsung’s instructions require a physical audio file stored on the device. A track available only through Spotify or another streaming service cannot normally be selected directly as a ringtone. Avoid unofficial ringtone mirrors and extracted files when an official Samsung source is not available; a third-party upload may be incomplete, mislabeled, or unauthorized.

“Over the Horizon” is an evolving Galaxy sound
Samsung has used “Over the Horizon” as a recurring Galaxy sound since 2011, repeatedly reworking the theme in different musical styles. The S24 edition continues that branding strategy. Its significance is not that Samsung replaced the melody, but that the familiar idea was given a distinctly orchestral treatment shaped by Korean traditional instrumentation.
For owners of the standard S24 trio, the version was presented as part of the phone’s built-in sound identity. For owners of other Galaxy devices, custom-file support may offer a separate route—but only when a legitimate local audio file is available and compatible with the phone.
