A generic astronaut is easy to recognize, but the most memorable space-themed Halloween costumes turn a mission, machine, or scientific idea into a wearable joke or striking silhouette. Standouts from Futurism’s 2021 roundup included a Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon, a child dressed as Neil Armstrong, a James Webb Space Telescope, and an astronaut apparently swimming in space. Here’s what made those ideas work—and how to choose or adapt a costume for your age, budget, and Halloween plans.

What makes a space costume memorable?
“Space-themed” can mean a real spacecraft or launch vehicle, an astronaut, a telescope, a satellite, a planet, an alien, a mission-control operator, or a visual pun about spaceflight. It need not be a licensed character or a realistic spacesuit. Often, the best costume is an object or idea made legible with a strong shape, a few distinctive details, and—if the reference is obscure—a name or mission label.

Standout costumes from the 2021 roundup
Futurism’s November 1, 2021 roundup featured costumes found or shared around that Halloween. These are useful inspiration, not a claim about current products or a new contest.
- Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon: A homemade spacecraft-and-rocket costume is instantly more specific than a generic astronaut outfit. The vehicle’s tall rocket shape and capsule give it a memorable silhouette. It is an ambitious build, best suited to a photo, party, or wearer who can move comfortably in it. Add clear labels or a mission patch so people recognize the reference.
- “Swimming” in space: An astronaut costume paired with inflatable swimming gear turns familiar space imagery into a simple visual gag. It is relatively easy to recreate, though bulky inflatables can be hot and awkward in crowds. Keep the added gear light and make sure it does not block movement or vision.
- Neil Armstrong: A child dressed as the first person to walk on the Moon is a compact history lesson as well as a costume. A spacesuit-inspired outfit, name tag, and a small Moon-surface prop help communicate the specific person. Avoid claiming a homemade outfit is an authentic spacesuit.
- James Webb Space Telescope: The telescope’s distinctive gold, segmented mirror makes an excellent costume shape. A gold or yellow hexagon pattern and a “James Webb Space Telescope” label help it read from a distance. The reference may be less obvious to people unfamiliar with Webb, so a name badge or companion astronomer helps.
- Young astronauts and mission crews: The roundup also showed children in astronaut looks, including outfits with NASA and SpaceX imagery and children inspired by the Inspiration4 mission. The broader idea is easy to adapt: give each person a different mission role or name patch. Logos on homemade costumes should not suggest official endorsement.
More space costume ideas, sorted by effort
Easy: start with clothes and one clear detail
- Astronaut: A jumpsuit or plain clothing in a space-program-inspired color, plus a name tag or mission patch. It is among the easiest and most recognizable options, but adding one specific mission or joke makes it less generic.
- Alien: A comfortable outfit, face paint, and simple antennae or a mask can create an instantly readable costume. For young children, choose soft, removable accessories.
- Mission Control: Wear ordinary clothes, add a headset, clipboard marked “flight plan,” and a countdown graphic or fictional mission badge. It is low-effort, comfortable, and a strong choice for an adult or a group member who does not want a bulky costume.
- Moon, star, or planet: A simple circular or star-shaped form works well for children. Keep it lightweight, with clear openings for arms and legs, and avoid trailing fabric.
Intermediate: build a recognizable object
- Rocket: A cardboard or foam-board body and a few bold color bands can sell the shape without elaborate tailoring. Lightweight construction matters more than detail if the wearer will be walking.
- Rover or probe: Use soft, oversized shapes for wheels, antennae, and instruments. Add the word “rover” or a fictional mission name if the design could otherwise look like a robot.
- Satellite: Make the panels or antennae visible from the front and side, and add a “no signal” sign for a joke. Keep projections soft and close to the body to avoid catching on people or doorways.
- Space tourist: Pair an astronaut-inspired outfit with an oversized boarding pass or a playful itinerary. This is an easy way to make a familiar look more distinctive.
Ambitious: go for a big visual concept
- James Webb Space Telescope: A large hexagonal mirror pattern is the key cue; a label supplies the context. A wearable frame can look impressive in photos but should not restrict vision or walking.
- Crew Dragon and Falcon 9: A group can divide the spacecraft, rocket, and crew among several people. A single-person build is possible, but test it in doorways, stairs, and a chair before Halloween.
- Black hole: Use a dark circular silhouette and objects apparently being pulled toward it—lightweight, soft props are safer than rigid ones. A sign or a few orbiting props help explain the idea.
- Solar system: Give each person a planet, the Sun, or the Moon. This works well for families, classrooms, and groups because each outfit can be simple while the group picture communicates the concept.
- Space junk: Use clean, safe recycled packaging as a playful satellite-debris costume. Avoid sharp edges, loose pieces, or anything that could snag or become litter.
Best picks by wearer and occasion
- For toddlers and young children: A simple astronaut, star, Moon, or lightweight rocket is easier to move in than a large structure. Prioritize clear vision, easy bathroom access, warm layers, and a hem that does not drag.
- For older children: Neil Armstrong, a rover, a telescope, or a mission specialist gives more room for labels, patches, and details they can help make.
- For adults: Mission Control is comfortable and low-effort; a historic astronaut is recognizable; a telescope, satellite, or black hole offers more originality.
- For couples: Pair a rocket with an astronaut, Earth with the Moon, or Mission Control with an astronaut. These combinations work because the relationship between the costumes is clear even if each is simple.
- For groups: Try a solar system, a spacecraft crew, or astronaut/alien/rover. A shared mission name or coordinated color scheme makes the group look deliberate.
- For a last-minute costume: Start with clothes you already own and add one readable prop: a clipboard for Mission Control, a name tag for an astronaut, or a “no signal” sign for a satellite.
- For a classroom or science event: A telescope, rover, planet, or mission role can prompt conversation. Add a short label explaining what the object does, especially for less familiar references.
Buy a base, or build the whole costume?
Buying is most practical when you need a fitted jumpsuit, a child’s size, a uniform look for a group, or a quick recognizable base. DIY works especially well for spacecraft, telescopes, rovers, satellites, black holes, and mission-control costumes, where a silhouette and a few details matter more than precise tailoring. A hybrid often gives the best balance: use a basic outfit or jumpsuit, then make the distinctive prop or mission accessories yourself.

As of the retailer pages checked in August 2026, Spirit Halloween listed an adult blue NASA jumpsuit costume at $54.99, with sizes Small through Extra Large shown; the listing describes a jumpsuit and matching hat and calls it an official NASA costume. Its product listing is the source for those details. Spirit’s children’s orange NASA jumpsuit was listed at a $32.98 sale price against a $44.99 regular price, but was marked out of stock online when checked. Local inventory may differ, and both prices can change.
For other options, Spirit’s astronaut category lists adult, child, inflatable, and other styles. The Smithsonian Store child astronaut suit page describes youth sizes XS through L and NASA, space-shuttle, commander, and American-flag patches; check the page for current price and availability. The Space Store’s costumes collection includes adult and child astronaut costumes, including Apollo and flight-suit options. Inflatable astronaut costumes can be funny and eye-catching, but bulk, heat, noise, and limited movement can make them a poor choice for trick-or-treating or packed rooms. A cardboard telescope or rocket may be inexpensive to make but harder to carry and store. Before buying, check the size chart, what pieces are included, the return terms, and whether the item can arrive in time.

- Add a mission patch with a fictional mission name or a name tag honoring a historic astronaut.
- Carry a clipboard labeled “flight plan,” a countdown badge, or a mission objective such as “retrieve missing Halloween candy.”
- Attach a small, lightweight cardboard spacecraft or add a soft toy rover or robot companion.
- Use a mission-specific color scheme, or make the wearer an “ISS repair crew” member with a pouch of soft toy tools.
- For a helmet effect, use costume-appropriate, lightweight headgear that preserves a clear field of vision. A face-painted or open-face look may be more practical than a closed mask.
Describe homemade outfits as NASA-inspired or space-program-inspired unless they are genuinely licensed products. A logo or familiar color scheme does not make a costume official, and a costume is not a flight-ready spacesuit.

- Vision and communication: Check peripheral vision and hearing with the full headpiece on. Make masks or helmets easy to remove.
- Movement: Walk, turn, sit, climb a step, and use the bathroom in the costume. Test doorways and car seats for large builds.
- Comfort: Check heat, weight, arm movement, and whether the outfit fits over the layers needed for local weather.
- Weather and visibility: Cardboard and paper can suffer in rain; visors may fog. Consider reflective details for outdoor visibility, and test them with the coat and shoes the wearer will actually use.
- Props and edges: Keep add-ons soft, lightweight, and securely attached. Avoid sharp points, long trailing fabric, and anything likely to snag or fall off.
- Heat and flame: Keep fabric and costume parts away from candles, heaters, and other flames. Battery-powered, low-heat lights are a better choice for a glow effect than hot components.

Halloween in orbit
Space costumes have a real-world counterpart: astronauts have celebrated Halloween aboard the International Space Station. NASA’s historical coverage shows individual and group costumes, often improvised from materials available on the station, including a history of Halloween on the ISS and a separate collection of space-station Halloween examples. It is a useful reminder that a clever costume is more about the idea than expensive materials.
