If a voice describes scenes, expressions, clothing, or on-screen action while you watch the Spectrum TV app on Roku, change the program’s audio track—not Roku’s captions or Screen Reader. Start the video, press the * (Star) button, open Audio track, Audio, Accessibility, Accessibility and Language, or SAP, and select the ordinary English or primary track.
If the voice reads Roku menus, buttons, or guide items instead, it is Roku’s Screen Reader. That is a separate feature and can be turned off at Home > Settings > Accessibility > Screen reader > Off.
First, identify which voice you are hearing

Roku’s Screen Reader reads interface text. It normally does not describe the action in a television program. Closed captions are separate as well: they display dialogue and sound information as text and do not control spoken audio description.
Turn off descriptive audio in the Spectrum Roku app
- Open the Spectrum TV app on your Roku.
- Start the affected live channel, show, or episode.
- While the video is actively playing, press the * (Star) button on the Roku remote.
- Look for an option named Audio track, Audio, Accessibility, Accessibility and Language, or SAP.
- Open the audio-selection menu.
- Choose the ordinary primary track, such as English, English – Original, Primary, or Stereo.
- Avoid tracks labeled Descriptive, Audio Description, Described Video, or Narration.
- Close the menu and resume playback. If the narration continues, stop and restart the program or switch channels and return.
The exact label is not universal. Roku’s documentation describes audio-track selection for streaming content when multiple tracks are supplied, so the Spectrum app may show different controls—or no selectable audio-track control—depending on the Roku model, app version, program, and available feed.

Turn off Roku Screen Reader instead
Use this section only if the voice reads Roku’s menus or controls rather than describing the program.
Using the remote shortcut
Press the * (Star) button four times quickly. This toggles Roku’s Screen Reader when its shortcut is enabled. It does not reliably turn off descriptive narration embedded in Spectrum program audio.

Using Roku Settings
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Select Settings.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select Screen reader.
- Set it to Off or Disabled.
If the feature is being activated accidentally, open the Screen Reader shortcut setting and disable the four-Star-button shortcut. Menu names can differ on older Roku software; older devices may call Screen Reader Audio Guide. Roku’s current terminology and controls are described in its accessibility support documentation.

What if the Star menu has no audio-track option?
Do not assume the Roku is malfunctioning. The audio-track control may be absent when Spectrum supplies only one selectable track for that program, channel, or episode. Roku cannot create a non-descriptive version if the service does not provide one.

Try these checks in order:
- Confirm that the voice describes the show and is not reading menus.
- Press Star while the video itself is playing, not while the guide or channel list is open.
- Check nested menus under Audio, Language, or Accessibility.
- If two English tracks appear, choose the one without descriptive or narration wording.
- Test another show or channel. If only one title is affected, the issue may be specific to that program feed.
- Exit and relaunch the Spectrum app.
- Restart Roku through Home > Settings > System > Power > System restart, where that menu is available. You can also unplug the Roku briefly, reconnect it, and retry.
Some streaming apps assign the Star button differently. If it opens another menu, use the in-player Audio, Language, or Accessibility control that Spectrum provides. Roku notes that Star-menu behavior can vary by app.
SAP, captions, and other settings
SAP
SAP, or Secondary Audio Program, can carry another language or descriptive audio on some live-TV feeds. Roku’s guide distinguishes SAP for applicable digital live-TV channels from Audio track controls for streaming content. If you are watching inside the Spectrum Roku app, use the Spectrum playback controls first.

Check Roku TV’s SAP setting only when you are using the television’s own antenna or built-in live-TV input, or when Spectrum specifically exposes SAP in its player. Turning off SAP is not a universal fix for narration in the Spectrum app.
Closed captions
Captions are text displayed on the screen. Turning them off will not remove a spoken descriptive track, and turning them on will not normally cause that track. Treat captions and descriptive audio as separate settings.

TV and audio equipment features
If narration continues on the Roku home screen, in another streaming app, or through another input, check the television’s voice guide and any accessibility or audio mode on a soundbar, receiver, cable box, or other connected device.

- Only one program or channel is affected: test another channel and note the title, episode, and air time. The program feed may be providing a different set of audio tracks.
- Every Spectrum program is affected: check the app’s playback audio selection, then relaunch the app and restart Roku.
- Every Roku app is affected: test the home screen and disable Screen Reader or the television’s own voice feature.
- The audio is another language rather than scene narration: check the audio-track menu before calling it audio description; it may be a language or SAP selection.
- The setting returns after changing channels: the app may not retain the preference, the new program may have different tracks, or the channel may supply descriptive audio as its only option.
When to contact Spectrum
Contact Spectrum if the narration is clearly part of the program, no ordinary primary track is available, or the audio selection does not work after restarting the app and Roku. Give support:
- your Roku model and Roku OS version;
- the Spectrum app version, if visible;
- the channel and program or episode title;
- the episode air time, if relevant;
- whether another show or channel has the same problem;
- whether an audio-track menu appears; and
- whether the narration occurs outside Spectrum.
That information helps distinguish an app setting from a channel or program-feed issue. Roku’s guide also notes that descriptive audio is supplied only for some programs, so availability and controls can vary.

Usually not. The normal fix is an audio-track selection in the Spectrum player or the Roku Screen Reader setting. Replacing a Roku or television is unlikely to solve a problem caused by Spectrum supplying only one audio track. Hardware replacement is worth considering only if the device is otherwise unsupported or its own accessibility controls are malfunctioning.
