HBO Max’s “biggest expansion yet” was not still two days away: the launch took place on March 26, 2026. HBO Max arrived directly in the UK and Ireland while launching simultaneously in 12 Asia-Pacific countries and territories. In the UK, the most significant change was the combination of HBO, Warner Bros., DC and Max programming with TNT Sports in one streaming ecosystem.
The original countdown headline was published on March 24, 2026. This is the retrospective explanation of what launched, where it launched and which subscription route makes the most sense.

What the expansion included
The March 26 rollout had two connected parts:
- UK and Ireland: HBO Max launched as a direct-to-consumer streaming service.
- Asia-Pacific: HBO Max entered Bhutan, Fiji, Kiribati, the Maldives, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu.
New Zealand was discussed separately as a planned mid-2026 launch, so it should not be counted among the 12 Asia-Pacific markets launched on March 26. Warner Bros. Discovery described the wider rollout as part of 22 HBO Max launches in 2026 so far. The phrase “biggest expansion yet” should be understood as the company’s promotional framing rather than a formally measured ranking by subscribers, revenue or territory count. Warner Bros. UK and Irish viewers had previously accessed much HBO programming through Sky and other licensing arrangements rather than through a local HBO Max service. The new platform created a single direct destination for programming from HBO, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Television, DC Studios, New Line Cinema, Max Originals and Discovery.

That does not mean every title became exclusive to HBO Max or that every plan received the same catalogue. Programming can vary by country, plan and distribution agreement. Sky and other partners continued to carry some Warner Bros. Discovery content.
For UK sports viewers, the change was especially important: TNT Sports became available through HBO Max as its UK streaming home, while continuing to be distributed through existing partners.
What was available at launch?
The launch promotion highlighted a mixture of established series, films, library programming and future releases.

Promoted future programming
Several titles mentioned in the launch material were not day-one releases. Lanterns was listed for summer 2026, the next season of Euphoria was due in April, and House of the Dragon was listed for later in the year. UK launch plans and prices
The following were the monthly UK launch prices announced in March 2026. Streaming prices and plan terms can change, so check the official HBO Max signup page before subscribing.

TNT Sports: the separate sports calculation
TNT Sports brought Premier League, UEFA competitions, rugby, UFC, MotoGP, tennis, cycling and other live sports to HBO Max in the UK. It was not included in the cheapest entertainment plan: customers needed a separate TNT Sports subscription or an entertainment-and-sports bundle.

The Saver offers required a 12-month minimum term and were available through the direct HBO Max website. The announced savings ranged from £60 to £131.88 per year, depending on the selection. These were UK offerings; the announcement should not be read as confirmation that Ireland received the same TNT Sports product.

Sky customers
Sky Stream and Sky Glass customers with Sky Ultimate TV, along with Sky Q customers, could receive Basic with Ads as part of qualifying Sky subscriptions. “Included” does not mean every Sky customer receives every HBO Max feature. Check the exact package, billing arrangement, device limits and cancellation terms before buying a second subscription.

NOW customers
A NOW Entertainment & HBO Max Basic with Ads bundle launched in the UK. Existing NOW Entertainment members were automatically switched to the combined membership under the announced arrangement. Members should check their account for the applicable price, renewal date and cancellation rules.
Prime Video customers
HBO Max was also offered through Prime Video in the UK. This can simplify billing and app access, but channel subscriptions may have different plan availability and feature limitations. TNT Sports availability through Prime Video was treated separately from TNT Sports purchased through HBO Max.
Who benefits most?
- HBO and prestige-TV fans: Direct HBO Max is the simplest route if you do not already receive access through another provider.
- Warner Bros. and DC viewers: The service consolidates major film, television and franchise libraries, although individual titles remain subject to plan and regional rights.
- Sports subscribers: UK viewers wanting TNT Sports should compare the standalone price with a bundle and decide whether a 12-month Saver commitment is worthwhile.
- Existing Sky customers: Check eligibility before subscribing directly; Basic with Ads may already be included in a qualifying package.
- Occasional streamers: The £4.99 ad-supported launch tier was the lowest entry point, but its film restriction matters if recent theatrical releases are important.
- Households needing 4K or more simultaneous viewing: Premium was the relevant launch tier, offering four devices, 4K Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos where available.
What changed after the countdown?
The countdown ended on March 26, 2026. HBO Max’s UK and Ireland arrival was therefore not an upcoming event but a completed launch. The broader rollout also included the 12 named Asia-Pacific markets on that date.
Because the prices, catalogue, partner packages and future-release schedules announced in March were launch information, readers should treat them as dated reference points rather than guaranteed September 2026 terms. The live HBO Max website and the relevant Sky, NOW or Prime Video account pages are the appropriate places to confirm current offers.
For most households, the deciding questions are straightforward: do you already have qualifying Sky or NOW access, do you need TNT Sports, are adverts acceptable, do you require 4K, and are you willing to accept a 12-month minimum term? Those answers matter more than the headline’s “biggest expansion” label.
