Spotify Car Thing stopped working on December 9, 2024. The small dashboard controller still may power on, but Spotify disabled its core playback functions. Spotify’s official guidance was to reset the device and dispose of it through local electronics-recycling channels. The company also invited owners to contact support about refunds, but the on-screen deadline was January 14, 2025, and that date has passed.
What Spotify Car Thing was—and why it stopped working
Car Thing was a dedicated control surface for Spotify, not a standalone music player or replacement car stereo. It had a touchscreen, physical dial, preset buttons and “Hey Spotify” voice control. It relied on a smartphone, mobile data, a Spotify Premium account and the car’s audio system; it drew power from the vehicle’s 12-volt outlet. Spotify introduced it for drivers who wanted easier access to Spotify in cars without modern infotainment systems. Spotify’s U.S. launch announcement listed a price of $89.99 and the service and phone requirements.
That dependence on Spotify’s service is why a device that still boots can nevertheless be unusable. Spotify disabled Car Thing’s core functionality remotely; powered-on units display a message saying the product is discontinued and no longer operational. “Bricked” is a common shorthand for this outcome, but it does not necessarily mean the physical electronics are broken: the service the hardware depended on has been switched off. Reports of the December deactivation describe the devices as officially disabled.

- April 2021: Spotify announced Car Thing as an in-car hardware experiment.
- October 2021: Limited availability began for eligible Premium users.
- February 22, 2022: General U.S. sales began at $89.99.
- July 2022: Spotify said it would stop producing the device.
- May 23, 2024: Spotify announced that existing units would stop operating.
- December 9, 2024: The devices were deactivated.
- January 14, 2025: The deadline shown on the shutdown screen for contacting Spotify about refund options.
So the headline’s “two years ago” describes roughly the interval between the 2022 U.S. launch and the May 2024 shutdown announcement—not the full period owners had the device. From public launch to deactivation was less than three years. The launch and warranty details cited here are U.S.-specific; they should not be treated as a statement about consumer remedies in every country.

Why Spotify shut it down
Spotify’s public explanation cited low product demand, supply-chain issues when production ended, a desire to streamline its product lineup, and a shift toward software features and improvements. Those are the company’s stated reasons; claims that a particular server expense, security issue or financial loss caused the shutdown should not be treated as established fact on this evidence. Can you still get a refund?
Spotify offered owners a way to contact customer support to discuss refunds. That was not the same as an automatic refund for every buyer. Reports described a process that could require proof of purchase or other details Spotify could use to verify a transaction. The shutdown-screen notice gave owners until January 14, 2025 to contact the company. That deadline has expired, so there is no basis to count on a refund now. You can still try Spotify Support, but a late request is uncertain and should not be mistaken for an open, guaranteed program.

- Your original order number and receipt or confirmation email, if available.
- The purchase date and amount paid.
- The device serial number, if you can access it.
- A photo or screenshot of the shutdown message, if available.
If you bought the unit used, preserve the resale listing, payment record and seller communications. Spotify may be unable to verify a purchase made through another person, and a marketplace seller is not automatically responsible for Spotify’s later service decision. Eligibility depends on the circumstances; do not assume either that a late request will succeed or that every owner received the original $89.99.

What to do with the disabled device
- Do not rely on it as a Spotify control while driving. A screen that turns on does not mean Spotify playback still works.
- Factory-reset it, if possible, before passing it on or disposing of it. Follow the device’s reset instructions and consider any account or personal information associated with it.
- Use an electronics-recycling route rather than ordinary trash where local rules require it. Check your city, county or state guidance, or a retailer or electronics-recycling program. Spotify’s direction was to reset the unit and dispose of it according to local electronic-waste rules.
- Be wary of “working” used listings. A working display or successful boot is not proof that the Spotify service is available. A seller should clearly disclose that Car Thing’s Spotify functionality has been discontinued.
There is no official replacement version, trade-in program or Spotify-supported way to keep using Car Thing as a general-purpose player in the supplied materials. Unofficial repurposing experiments have been reported, but they are not a supported consumer fix and may involve custom firmware, disassembly or other technical work. Treat those projects as experiments, not as a dependable way to restore Spotify service.

For Android Auto and CarPlay, compatibility depends on the phone, vehicle or receiver, software and sometimes the cable. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying equipment. If you consider a replacement stereo, verify dashboard fit, steering-wheel-control support and any required wiring harness or installation parts. A phone mount can make the phone easier to see, but it does not provide Car Thing’s controls or make phone interaction safe while driving. Set up playback and navigation before moving, use hands-free controls where available, and follow local laws.

Spotify Connect can control playback on another compatible device, but it is not a universal solution for older cars; it depends on a compatible receiving device and network setup. See Spotify’s explanation of Connect before treating it as an option.

The bigger lesson about connected hardware
Car Thing’s shutdown illustrates a distinction that matters when buying any connected device: owning the physical hardware does not necessarily mean owning the service, account access or software needed to make it useful. Car Thing depended on Spotify’s infrastructure and a Premium account, so the intact screen and knob could not preserve its central function after Spotify ended support. That is a consumer lesson drawn from the shutdown, not an admission by Spotify about a broader policy. Before buying connected hardware, it is worth asking what still works if the manufacturer ends the service, what support period is promised, and how the device can be reset or recycled afterward.
