To watch NFL football on an Amazon Fire TV Stick, install the official app that carries the game and sign in with the subscription or TV-provider account that includes it. The Stick is a streaming device, not a football package: no single app or subscription carries every NFL game. This guide covers U.S. NFL viewing in 2026; soccer, college football and football outside the U.S. have different rights and apps.
Before you start
You’ll need a Fire TV Stick connected to your TV and the internet, an Amazon account registered on the device, and an eligible subscription or participating TV-provider login for the game you want. Keep Fire OS and your apps up to date. For local channels, have your ZIP code handy: channel availability depends on your market. App availability and device compatibility can vary by region and Fire TV generation, so check the official app listing for your model. Amazon notes that subscriptions may be required and availability varies by region (Amazon Fire TV overview).
An antenna is another option for over-the-air local broadcasts when CBS, FOX or NBC is available in your area and your TV setup supports reception. It is separate from Fire TV: it does not provide streaming apps, ESPN, Prime Video or out-of-market games.

Install the right app on Fire TV
- From the Fire TV home screen, choose Find, the search icon or Apps (labels vary by model and software version), then choose Search if prompted.
- Search for the official app you need, such as Prime Video, YouTube, YouTube TV, Peacock, ESPN, Paramount+, NFL or FOX One, where available.
- Check the publisher and app logo in the results. Choose the official app’s detail page, then select Get, Download or Install.
- Open the app and sign in. Depending on the service, you may use your remote, a QR code, an activation code or your email and password.
- Search for the team, matchup or league, or browse the app’s live sports listing. Confirm that the event is live and included in your plan.
The app should appear in your app library or on the home screen after installation. If it is hard to find, open Apps or Your Apps & Channels, choose See All if shown, highlight the app and use the Menu button to move it to the front if that option is available. Menu wording differs across Fire OS versions.

Which Fire TV app has the game?
For U.S. NFL games, start with the schedule and rights holder for the particular matchup. The NFL’s ways-to-watch guide lists viewing options by game and notes that availability can depend on the market and provider. The schedule and assignments can change, including through flex scheduling, so check the game listing before subscribing.

These are starting points, not guarantees for every plan or market. The NFL’s provider-authentication guidance describes routes for local CBS, FOX and NBC games and identifies app-specific compatibility requirements. That guidance lists Fire TV 6 or newer for that particular NFL app workflow; it is not a universal minimum for every football app.
How to watch by game type
Thursday Night Football
Open Prime Video and sign in to the Amazon account with the required Prime entitlement. Search for Thursday Night Football, the teams or the live sports listing, then select the game when it is live. The NFL also directs Prime subscribers to Prime Video for Thursday Night Football (NFL viewing help). Amazon advertises 17 exclusive NFL games in its 2026 sports lineup, including Thursday Night Football and Black Friday; confirm the individual event in Prime Video’s schedule (Amazon’s 2026 live sports page). This is not a way to watch all Sunday, Monday or playoff games.

Local Sunday afternoon games
Local means the viewer’s current broadcast market, not necessarily the market where their favorite team plays. A local matchup may be available through CBS, FOX or another listed broadcaster, while a fan’s preferred team is out of market. Depending on the game and location, options can include Paramount+ for eligible local CBS coverage, FOX’s current streaming service, or a live-TV service that carries the local affiliate. NBC/Peacock applies to NBC-controlled games, not every Sunday afternoon game.
Before paying, check the provider’s channel availability for your ZIP code and whether its plan includes the specific channel or event. The NFL lists providers such as YouTube TV, DIRECTV, Hulu, Sling and Fubo among possible TV-provider routes, but local lineups are not identical everywhere (NFL viewing options).
Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games
NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube or YouTube TV is the relevant package for eligible Sunday afternoon games on CBS and FOX that are outside your local market. Use the YouTube or YouTube TV app on Fire TV and sign in to the account that owns access. Sunday Ticket does not replace Prime Video for Thursday games, and it does not automatically include Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, local games, or every playoff or special-event broadcast. The NFL also identifies Sunday Ticket as the out-of-market route (NFL regular-season access help).

Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football
For Sunday Night Football, try Peacock or a live-TV app that carries your local NBC station, as appropriate for the event and your plan. For Monday Night Football, use ESPN or a live-TV service with ESPN and, where the particular broadcast calls for it, ABC. Not every service’s standalone subscription unlocks every game. Check the matchup’s listing in the app or the NFL schedule instead of assuming it will appear under the same tab each week. The NFL identifies NBC/Peacock and ESPN/ABC among the routes for these games (NFL viewing by day; NFL ways to watch).
NFL app and special events
The NFL app is useful for schedules, game information and eligible live viewing, including access that may depend on market rules or a participating TV provider. Installing the app does not give you rights to every live game. The NFL lists supported providers, including examples such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and Sling TV, in its NFL app provider guide. For playoff, international and other special games, follow the service named for that event; some may be on a different rights holder from the regular weekly schedule.
Sign in and activate a streaming app
- Open the app and choose Sign in.
- If a QR code or activation code appears, scan it or use the activation page displayed by the official app. Enter the code there and sign in with the account that owns the subscription or provider access.
- Return to Fire TV and allow time for the entitlement to load. If you are asked for a TV provider, choose your provider and use its credentials, not just your streaming-app password.
Only enter activation codes on the page identified by the official app. If a game stays locked, confirm you signed in with the right account and that the plan includes that specific game. YouTube, YouTube TV, Prime Video and a TV provider may use separate accounts even when they are on the same device.

Choose a setup that matches how you watch
- Mostly local games: Check whether an antenna can receive local CBS, FOX or NBC broadcasts in your area. Add only the streaming subscriptions needed for the games you want. An antenna does not supply ESPN, Prime Video or out-of-market coverage.
- Thursday games: Prime Video is the main Fire TV route for Thursday Night Football and Amazon’s listed NFL events. It is not an all-games solution.
- Out-of-market Sunday fan: Consider NFL Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV for eligible Sunday afternoon games. Verify the current purchase terms and coverage before paying.
- Many national channels and local stations: A live-TV bundle may combine local broadcast channels with ESPN or NFL Network, depending on ZIP code and plan. It may still leave games on Prime Video, Peacock or Sunday Ticket outside the bundle.
- Only a few games: Check whether the official rights holder offers a suitable short-term or single-event option. Do not assume it does, or that it includes other games.
Subscription prices, plan names, channel lineups and app branding change. Check the provider’s current terms and ZIP-code availability before subscribing. Buying a newer Fire TV Stick can help if your current device is unsupported or struggling, but it cannot fix a blackout, missing subscription or rights restriction.

The app is missing from search or will not install
Possible causes include an older or unsupported Fire TV model, an outdated Fire OS version, a different Amazon marketplace or country, parental controls, or a changed app listing. Check the app’s official Amazon listing and minimum device requirements, update Fire OS, and confirm the account’s country/region. App availability varies by region. Avoid sideloading an unverified APK just to watch a game.
I subscribed, but the game is locked
A lock usually means the account lacks the right entitlement, not that the Fire TV needs replacing. The plan may be too limited, the game may belong to another broadcaster, or you may have signed into the wrong account. Sunday Ticket, for example, is not a substitute for Prime Video, Peacock or ESPN/ABC games. Sign out and back in, verify the subscription on the provider’s official site, check the game’s listing and compare it with the table above. Check for location or blackout restrictions, too. Contact the provider before purchasing a second subscription.

The event appears, but will not play
Check that the stream has actually started; a pre-game tile may appear before the live feed. Confirm the latest schedule in case the game was moved or flexed, then check local-market restrictions. If other videos in the app also fail, update or restart the app and Fire TV; if only this game fails, check the provider’s event listing, account entitlement or service status.
The stream buffers or looks blurry
- Confirm the game is live and your plan includes it.
- Try another video in the same app to see whether the problem is limited to the event.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Restart Fire TV. A common path is Settings → My Fire TV → Restart; menu wording may differ.
- Restart your router, reduce Wi-Fi congestion, or move the Stick closer to the router. A compatible Ethernet adapter can provide a wired connection.
- Update the app and Fire OS. If needed, clear the app cache; clearing app data may sign you out. Reinstall the app as a later step.
- Check the service’s outage notices, account status, location and any blackout restrictions.
YouTube TV recommends at least 7 Mbps for the best NFL Sunday Ticket streaming experience, but that is its service recommendation—not a universal minimum for every Fire TV app (YouTube TV help). Wi-Fi congestion, a Stick tucked behind a TV, simultaneous streams and an app or provider outage can also affect playback. A 4K Fire TV Stick does not make a football broadcast 4K: the event, plan, device, HDMI path and TV must all support the format.
Other kinds of football
This guide focuses on American football, especially the NFL, in the United States. College football rights vary by conference and game and can involve ESPN, ESPN+, FOX, FS1, CBS/Paramount+, NBC/Peacock, conference networks and live-TV services. Check the specific matchup rather than assuming an NFL package covers it. If you mean soccer, rugby, Canadian football or football outside the U.S., search Fire TV for the official service carrying that league or competition in your country.
Use official apps and authorized subscriptions. Unverified IPTV services or modified Fire TV devices can expose you to unreliable streams, credential theft, malware or payment fraud, and may violate provider terms or the law. They are not dependable fixes for a locked or buffering game.
