A 33-year-old Hawthorne man, Joseph Mayuyo, was arrested on October 4, 2025, after Culver City police said investigators traced multiple alleged online threats reported by TikTok employees to him. One message allegedly targeted TikTok’s Culver City headquarters, which the company’s security team evacuated as a precaution. The available reports describe a threat investigation, not a physical attack at the office, and do not report injuries.
What happened at TikTok’s Culver City office
On Friday, October 3, TikTok employees reported receiving multiple threats through social-media platforms. A subsequent message allegedly threatened the company’s Culver City headquarters. TikTok security evacuated the office out of caution while police investigated. TechCrunch’s account of the incident describes the evacuation as a precaution; the available coverage does not describe an assault or other physical attack at the headquarters.
The Culver City location is described in reports as TikTok’s headquarters or Los Angeles-area headquarters. That does not mean it is the company’s global headquarters. Reports do not establish how many evacuations took place, so the confirmed account is that the office was evacuated after the reported threat.
Police traced the alleged threats to a Hawthorne home
Investigators traced the alleged online messages to a residence in Hawthorne, California, and went there as part of the inquiry. Authorities said Mayuyo made further threatening statements during the investigation, including one indicating that he would not be taken alive. The reports do not reproduce the alleged threats in full, and their exact wording has not been established in the available accounts.

Detectives obtained search and arrest warrants. The Culver City Police Department’s Emergency Response Team assisted, and negotiators communicated with Mayuyo for more than 90 minutes. He eventually left the residence voluntarily and was arrested peacefully on October 4, according to The Independent’s report. The police department’s October 4 release confirms the date of the operation.
What is known about the arrest—and what is not
Mayuyo, 33, of Hawthorne, was booked on suspicion of making criminal threats. Booking on suspicion is not the same as a formal criminal charge, and an arrest is not a finding of guilt. The available reports do not establish a later charging decision, plea, conviction, sentence, or other court outcome.

Police said they recovered items of evidentiary value during a search of the home but did not identify them in the reporting reviewed here. There is no basis in those accounts to claim that officers found a particular weapon or explosive. They also do not establish a motive.

TechCrunch reported that one employee believed the messages appeared to target TikTok’s e-commerce department. It also noted a July 2025 Medium post criticizing TikTok Shop USA on an account under Mayuyo’s name. Those details are reported context, not proof that the department was the target, that Mayuyo authored the post, or that the post was connected to the alleged threats.

Police and company response
Culver City police praised TikTok’s security team for its quick response, collaboration, and professionalism. Police Chief Jason Sims said the department takes threats seriously and credited the coordinated response with allowing the suspect to be taken into custody peacefully. The TechCrunch report said it had contacted TikTok for comment but did not include a substantive company response; it therefore does not establish that TikTok independently confirmed the allegations or Mayuyo’s identity.
The available reports do not report injuries. That is narrower than a definitive statement that nobody was harmed: the evacuation is described as precautionary, and no physical attack at the office is reported in the coverage cited here.
