Pocket Casts lets you collect individual podcast episodes into named, manually ordered Playlists—and you don’t need a paid plan to use them. Introduced on November 24, 2025, the feature is available in current iOS and Android apps, the web player, and the desktop app. It works well for a documentary-listening list such as “Investigations to Revisit” or “Long-form Interviews,” but it is not a shared playlist or an automatically updated favorites list.
What Pocket Casts Playlists do
A manual Playlist is a saved collection of episodes. You can mix episodes from different podcasts, give the collection a name, arrange its order, and play individual episodes or the collection. You can also add episodes to an existing Playlist even if you do not follow their podcasts, according to Pocket Casts’ Playlists support page.
This fills a different need from Pocket Casts’ older tools. Up Next is the active listening queue; a manual Playlist is a collection you can keep and return to. Starred marks individual episodes as favorites. Smart Playlists automatically gather episodes that match criteria you choose.

How to create a Playlist
On iPhone or Android
- Open Pocket Casts and go to the Playlists tab.
- Tap the plus button in the upper-right corner.
- Enter a name, or keep the default name.
- Tap Create Playlist.
On the web or desktop app
- Open the Playlists tab.
- Select New playlist.
- Enter a name and select Create playlist.
These labels and steps come from Pocket Casts’ support instructions. If the Playlists tab is missing on mobile, first check that the app is version 8.0 or later and update it if needed. The exact interface can vary with app version.
How to add episodes
You can add episodes while browsing or from the player:

- From a Playlist on mobile: Open it, tap Add episodes, choose a followed podcast, tap the plus icon beside episodes, then confirm with Done where shown.
- From an episode list on mobile: Swipe left on an episode, tap the plus icon, choose an existing Playlist or create one, and tap Done.
- From Now Playing: Open the playing episode and tap the plus icon in the player toolbar. If it is not visible, open More actions. Choose a Playlist and tap Done.
- From episode details: Open the episode, tap the plus icon, choose a Playlist, and confirm. Pocket Casts documents this route for Android 8.5 and later and iOS 8.6 and later.
- On web or desktop: Use the plus icon beside an episode in an episode list, show page, or episode details page, then select a Playlist.
Manual Playlists can include individual episodes from shows you do not follow. That is useful for a one-off documentary, a limited series, or an interview you want to keep without adding the whole show to your regular subscriptions. There is a documentation wrinkle: Pocket Casts’ dedicated Playlists page says unfollowed-show episodes can be added, while a more general episode-management page appears to say they cannot. The feature-specific Playlists instructions are the clearer account; Smart Playlists, by contrast, are limited to followed shows.

Making a favorites list
Choose the method that matches what you mean by “favorites”:
- For a hand-picked, stable collection: Create a manual Playlist called “Favorites” and add the episodes you want. This suits a curated set of standout documentaries, interviews, or episodes you plan to replay.
- For a list that follows your changing stars: Star episodes as you listen, then create a Smart Playlist with its criterion set to Starred. Star or unstar an episode to change what qualifies. This option is documented on iOS and Android.
“Favorites” is a possible Playlist name and use case, not the name of a new automatic favorites database. If you want a list that updates itself, use Starred with a Smart Playlist rather than expecting a manual Playlist to discover new episodes.

Playback, ordering, and downloads
You can play an episode directly from a Playlist or send Playlist episodes to Up Next. Manual Playlists can be arranged in your preferred order. Be careful with Play All: Pocket Casts says it replaces the existing Up Next queue with the Playlist’s episodes; it does not simply append them. If you want to preserve your current queue, add episodes individually or use the appropriate Up Next action instead.
A Playlist can have Auto Download enabled in Playlist Options. Adding an episode to a Playlist is not itself the same as downloading it: Playlists can be streamed, while downloads are for offline playback. Pocket Casts documents the setting but does not establish identical download timing or storage behavior across every platform, so check the app’s Playlist Options rather than assuming that adding an episode automatically saves it offline.

Limits and other things to know
- Up to 1,000 episodes per Playlist: Pocket Casts documents this per-Playlist maximum. The available documentation does not establish a total Playlist-count or account-storage limit.
- Playlists are private to your account: Pocket Casts says you cannot share or export a Playlist, send it to another user, or create a Playlist share link. You can share individual episodes, podcasts, or a curated list of podcasts instead.
- No imported local files: Audio files imported into Pocket Casts cannot be added to a Playlist.
- Removed episodes may stop playing: If a creator removes an episode, it can show as unavailable in the Playlist. Look for an available replacement or updated feed entry.
- Manual lists need maintenance: A normal Playlist will not automatically add new episodes just because they fit its theme.
- Smart Playlists are mobile-only: Do not assume that rule-based lists are available in the web or desktop app.
Is Pocket Casts Plus required?
No. Pocket Casts says manual Playlists are available to free users, so there is no reason to upgrade just to create or use one. Plus may matter for other premium features, but the Playlist feature itself is not paywalled.
Is Pocket Casts the right podcast app for this?
Pocket Casts is a good fit if you want to organize individual episodes across shows and use the same podcast service on mobile, web, and desktop. It is particularly useful when a listening plan is about episodes rather than subscriptions—for example, a list of documentary episodes on a subject, a sequence of interviews, or a queue for a trip. It is a weaker fit if you need to share a finished playlist, combine local audio files with podcast episodes, or rely on an automatically generated recommendation mix.
The alternatives suit different habits. Apple Podcasts is a natural choice for listeners who primarily use Apple devices and want its built-in ecosystem and creator subscriptions. Overcast is an independent, Apple-platform-focused option for iPhone listeners, but not a cross-platform substitute for Android users. Castro centers on an inbox and a manually ordered queue rather than multiple persistent episode Playlists, and is oriented toward Apple devices. Spotify makes sense if you want podcasts integrated with music and discovery in one service, rather than Pocket Casts’ dedicated podcast workflow.
Those are workflow distinctions, not claims that one app is universally better. If your specific requirement is a manually curated episode collection that remains available across platforms, Pocket Casts’ free Playlists address it directly. If shareability or automatic discovery is the requirement, this feature alone will not solve it.
