Amazon’s Kindle Translate is a free, invite-only beta that lets eligible Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) authors create AI-translated e-books for sale through Amazon stores. Launched on November 6, 2025, it supports translations involving English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Portuguese, according to Amazon’s June 30, 2026 update. It is not a reader-facing feature for translating any Kindle book: authors need an eligible live e-book, the relevant translation rights and an invitation.
The tool lowers the upfront cost of testing a foreign-language edition, but it has important limits. Authors can preview a translation, yet cannot directly edit its prose in Kindle Translate; Amazon retains ownership of the generated edition files, which cannot be distributed outside the program. Whether it makes sense depends on the book’s style, formatting, rights and intended distribution.
What Kindle Translate does—and what it does not
Kindle Translate is a publishing workflow inside Kindle Direct Publishing, not a feature that lets Kindle readers translate books on demand. It takes an eligible KDP e-book and creates a translated e-book edition that an author can offer through Amazon stores. Authors can choose publishing settings such as territories, price and, where applicable, KDP Select enrollment, then track sales in KDP Reports.
Amazon launched the service on November 6, 2025, as an invite-only beta. It remains a beta as of August 2026. Amazon says the expanded offering supports translations between English and Spanish, German, French, Italian and Portuguese. That description does not establish that every possible direction between every pair of those languages is available; check the language options shown in KDP for the specific book.

Amazon reports that thousands of authors have used the service, with millions of pages read and average customer ratings above four stars. Those are Amazon’s own reported figures, not an independent assessment of translation quality.
Who can use it?
Kindle Translate is not open to every KDP author or every Kindle title. Participation is by invitation, and the source must be an eligible KDP e-book that is live and offered for sale in a supported language. The author or rights holder must control the relevant translation rights. A book primarily made up of public-domain material is ineligible, and a Kindle Translate edition cannot be used as the source for another Kindle Translate translation. Amazon also reserves the right to reject a book or remove a translation that does not meet its standards.
On an eligible title, the KDP Bookshelf may show Translate your eBook. If the option is absent, the book may not meet the eligibility requirements, or the author may not have access to the beta.

Translation rights may have been granted to a publisher, co-author, agent, foreign-rights partner or another party. Being the author—or owning the original-language e-book—does not automatically mean you control those rights.

How the KDP workflow works
- Open the KDP Bookshelf and find the eligible e-book.
- Select Translate your eBook or, for an existing translation setup, Manage translations.
- Choose a target language from the options offered for that title and review the translation settings.
- Choose whether to preview the translation before publication or enable automatic translation and publication when available.
- Set territorial rights, list price, royalty plan and any KDP Select enrollment you want for the translated edition.
- Review the generated edition and submit it for publication. Monitor sales in KDP Reports.
For automatic publishing, Amazon documents this route: open Manage translations or Continue setup, choose Adjust translations settings, enable Automatically translate and publish in new languages under Languages, then select Submit for publishing. Automatic publishing can save repeat setup work, but it also means a new language edition may go live without a fresh manual review. Authors unsure about the results may prefer to leave the option off initially.
Translations inherit details from the source e-book, and updates to source metadata can flow to translations. Amazon says automatic translations use the source book’s default cover unless the author uploads another cover. The default treatment includes the existing cover image, a white border and the language at the top. These inherited details can be a poor fit if the target market needs a different title, subtitle, description, series naming convention or cover treatment.
Amazon says translated series editions are created automatically within five business days after translations go live. Check eligibility across the series and verify that numbering, titles and covers make sense together in the target language.

Kindle Translate allows authors to preview a generated translation, but currently offers no in-place editor for correcting the translated text. That distinction matters: previewing an edition and changing its publishing settings are not the same as being able to revise a mistranslated idiom, a character’s voice, a joke, a technical term or a cultural reference.

If you find a problem, Amazon’s published workflow does not establish that you can export the generated text, patch it and upload the corrected file as a Kindle Translate edition. Possible next steps include changing the source book and checking whether a regenerated translation is available, unpublishing the translation, or creating a separate translation through another workflow under the applicable KDP rules. Do not assume the Amazon-generated file can be reused elsewhere.
How good is it, and which books are suitable?
Amazon says translations go through automated quality checks, including a seven-step threshold that considers literary elements of long-form translation. That is evidence of a screening process, not a guarantee that a published translation will match the work of a professional literary translator. A system can screen out some weak output and still miss awkward dialogue, inconsistent terminology, lost humor or culturally unsuitable phrasing.
Amazon flags books with many images, multiple languages, tables, graphs or code excerpts as potential problem cases. Based on those limitations, Kindle Translate is a more plausible first test for a text-heavy book with straightforward formatting than for a graphic novel, illustrated children’s book, cookbook, highly designed nonfiction title or technical manual. That is a practical inference from Amazon’s warnings, not a promise about how any specific title will perform.

- More promising candidates: straightforward text-heavy nonfiction or a relatively simple book where an author can assess reader response and accept beta limitations.
- Higher-risk candidates: voice-driven fiction, poetry, humor, dialect-heavy dialogue, culturally specific writing, books with complex terminology, or titles whose meaning depends on layout and images.
Even if Amazon’s quality threshold is met, it cannot establish that a regional variety of Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese is right for the intended audience, or that every character still sounds distinct. A native-speaking review can help identify problems, but Kindle Translate itself does not provide a prose-editing tool for applying that review.

Rights, files and distribution: read the terms before accepting
Amazon’s beta terms provide for a nonexclusive, irrevocable licence for Amazon parties to translate the submitted digital book for the program. They also say Amazon retains ownership of Kindle Translate edition files and that the author may not sell or distribute those particular editions outside the program. This is a significant constraint: a Kindle Translate file is not a free translation asset to download and upload to other retailers.
The terms do not say the author gives up every translation right in every form. Unless KDP Select exclusivity applies, the author may create an alternative translation in the same language and distribute that independently, subject to the applicable terms and rights. That alternative is a separate edition, not a way to export or republish Amazon’s generated file.
Authors select territorial rights for a translation. Distribution is through Amazon stores covered by that selection; Kindle Translate is not a route to automatic placement on Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, libraries or other non-Amazon channels.

Translated editions may be enrolled in KDP Select and included in Kindle Unlimited, subject to the current program rules and the author’s choice. KDP Select has exclusivity obligations, so check the current terms for the relevant marketplace before distributing the same e-book elsewhere. Do not assume a translation enrolled in Select can also be sold through other retailers.

Authors can unpublish a Kindle Translate e-book through KDP. Unpublishing stops that edition from being offered through the program; it does not give the author ownership of, or the right to export, Amazon’s generated translation file.

Amazon says Kindle Translate is free for beta participants. Its official materials do not establish a per-word fee during the beta, and the beta price should not be treated as a promise about future pricing. Authors may still spend money on manuscript preparation, a replacement or localized cover, marketing, and independent human proofreading or post-editing. A weak edition can also carry reputational costs through confused readers and poor reviews.
For comparison, Reedsy lists typical book-translation rates of about $0.06–$0.12 per word; its cited averages vary by language, including $0.06 for English-to-Spanish or Italian, $0.07 for English-to-German and $0.09 for English-to-French. These are marketplace signals, not guaranteed quotes. A professional translator can discuss choices and adapt voice and cultural references, but commissioning one requires an upfront budget and does not itself handle every formatting or distribution task.

That trades some future revenue and control for translation and distribution help; review the actual revenue-share terms and translator arrangement before agreeing.
DeepL offers paid document and API translation, but it is a general translation tool rather than a turnkey e-book publishing service. It does not by itself settle rights, proofread literary work, localize a cover or blurb, or publish through retailers. Its plans and usage charges can change, so check current pricing directly. An AI-first workflow is most defensible when a capable native-language reviewer can assess the output; post-editing a poor literary draft may approach the effort of translating it anew.
Choosing the right route
- Consider Kindle Translate if your book is eligible, you control its translation rights, Amazon-only distribution is acceptable, and you want to test demand without an upfront translation fee. Start with a title whose formatting and style do not make errors especially costly, preview the edition, and watch reader feedback.
- Choose a professional human translator when voice, humor, cultural adaptation, poetry, dialogue or precise terminology is central, or when you need close control and a translation that can be distributed independently.
- Consider a royalty-share service if you cannot fund an upfront translation and are willing to share future revenue in exchange for a partner-led arrangement. Understand the split and distribution terms first.
- Use a general AI translation tool as a draft aid, not a publishing shortcut, unless you have a reliable native-language review and a separate plan for editing, formatting, rights and retail distribution.
Kindle Translate removes a financial and logistical barrier to trying selected foreign-language editions, but it does not remove an author’s responsibility for rights, quality, localization or distribution. For a suitable, text-heavy e-book, it can be a low-cost experiment. For a book where every line’s voice matters—or where the author needs an editable translation and broader retail reach—the beta’s current limits may outweigh the savings.
