Hinge’s AI feature, Convo Starters, offers up to three ideas for a first message based on selected photos, prompt answers and pronouns shown on a dater’s profile. It can help you notice a specific detail instead of reaching for “How’s your week?”—but it does not write or send a message for you, and there’s no published evidence that it leads to more replies or dates.
What Hinge’s Convo Starters do
Convo Starters are suggestions for opening a conversation, not a dating chatbot. In Hinge’s documented flow, you browse a profile in Discover and tap Like on a qualifying photo or text prompt. Hinge may then show up to three ideas tied to that particular piece of profile content. You can take inspiration from one, adapt it or ignore the suggestions and write your own message.
For example, a photo that appears to show someone at a pasta restaurant might prompt a question about the restaurant, a favorite pasta dish or a recipe. Those are illustrative possibilities, not guaranteed outputs. A picture may not tell you whether the person likes the restaurant, cooked the food or was even there; treat the AI’s interpretation as a cue to ask, not a fact to assume.
Hinge says Convo Starters do not provide pre-written messages or send anything on your behalf. You remain responsible for composing and sending the message. The feature is for first-message inspiration, not ongoing chat coaching or automatic replies.

Where suggestions appear—and when they may not
- Open Discover and view a profile.
- Tap Like on a photo or text prompt.
- If that content qualifies, look for up to three Convo Starters beneath it.
- Use one as a starting point, rewrite it in your own voice or dismiss it. Send a message yourself only if you want to.
Suggestions are not offered for every profile item. Hinge lists selfies and group photos, Voice Prompts, Video Prompts, Poll Prompts, and content involving sensitive topics or terms among the exclusions. The system may also decide that a piece of content is unsuitable for a suggestion. Hinge says suggestions are generated automatically and are not reviewed beforehand, so they can be off-base or irrelevant; users can submit feedback through the feature.
If you do not see suggestions, the selected content may be excluded, or you may have opted out. Availability can also depend on rollout or account eligibility, but Hinge’s documentation does not establish a universal country-by-country rollout. Check the app rather than assuming the feature is available to every user. The available information does not say Convo Starters requires Hinge+ or HingeX, so a missing feature is not evidence that you need to pay.

What profile information goes to OpenAI?
Hinge says that, where the feature is available, it sends profile prompt responses, photos and pronouns to OpenAI to generate suggestions. Hinge describes this as information already visible to other Hinge members. For this feature, it says the system does not analyze facial geometry or biometric data and does not use private messages as inputs.
Hinge says OpenAI acts as its data processor, follows Hinge’s instructions and cannot use the received information to train its models. Hinge also says OpenAI deletes the data it receives within 30 days. That is separate from Hinge’s own retention: generated Convo Starters remain account data for the life of your account, and Hinge says it deletes them under its privacy policy after account closure. You can access generated suggestions through Hinge’s in-app Download My Data tool. These are Hinge’s descriptions of its data handling; they should not be collapsed into the claim that all related data is deleted after 30 days.

If you do not want your public profile content processed by an external AI provider for this feature, Hinge says you can opt out in Settings. Its help article does not give a stable, precise menu path, so look for the Convo Starters control in the current app settings. Opting out stops suggestions from being generated on your photos and prompt responses, and also means you will no longer see suggestions on other daters’ qualifying content that you like.
Does it actually make dating conversations better?
It may make it easier to begin with something more specific than generic small talk. That is a useful design goal, but it is not the same as proving that conversations improve. Hinge reports that 72% of daters are more likely to consider a potential match when a Like includes a message, and says its testing found users felt more confident sending a first message with Convo Starters. The 72% figure is Hinge’s claim about Likes that include messages; it does not establish that AI suggestions cause more replies, dates or lasting relationships. The confidence finding is not an outcome study of dating success.

The feature’s practical value depends on what you do with the prompt. A specific question can give someone an easier opening to answer, but an AI suggestion can also sound polished, generic or unlike you. It can misread a photo, invite an assumption, or encourage the same opener to be sent to multiple people. A prompt cannot manufacture genuine curiosity or compensate for a profile that offers little to respond to.

Turn the suggestion into a message that sounds like you
A simple approach is specific detail + genuine reaction + open question. Keep it brief, ask one question rather than conducting an interview, and avoid treating an image as proof of someone’s interests or circumstances.

- AI cue: Ask about the restaurant in a pasta photo.
- More human version: “That pasta looks dangerously good—was the place worth the visit, or was the photo doing all the work?”
The rewrite refers to something visible, leaves room for correction and gives the other person a real question to answer. You could also add a small, relevant detail about yourself if it genuinely fits. Avoid turning a suggestion into a probe about someone’s health, religion, politics, finances, ethnicity, sexuality or relationship history unless they have clearly chosen to raise that subject on their profile. If the conversation flows, move beyond endless opener-style questions rather than relying on prompts to carry the exchange.
Hinge’s official feature is different from third-party automation. The company warns that autoswipers, bots, scrapers and similar tools violate its Terms of Service and may lead to an account ban. Convo Starters is an in-app suggestion feature; it is not permission to automate likes or messages.
Who might prefer to opt out?
Consider turning the feature off if you are uncomfortable with profile photos, prompt answers or pronouns being processed by an external AI provider, dislike AI-generated social prompts, or simply prefer to write every opener unaided. The trade-off is reciprocal: opting out means you will not get suggestions for your own qualifying profile content, but you will also stop seeing them on other people’s content.
