Yes—Kindle users in the United States can tap “Get Book” in the iPhone or iPad app to reach a book’s Amazon listing, but they still complete the purchase on Amazon’s website in a browser. The May 2025 change makes the route easier; it does not add Apple in-app checkout or an Amazon checkout screen inside Kindle.
What the “Get Book” button does
On an eligible Kindle book listing, “Get Book” hands you off from the Kindle app to the corresponding Amazon Kindle Store page in your device’s default browser. You sign in to Amazon if needed, confirm the Kindle edition, and complete checkout on Amazon. The title is then associated with the Amazon account used for the purchase and should appear in that account’s Kindle library after syncing.
That distinction matters: the button is a browser handoff, not an in-app purchase. It does not open Apple’s payment sheet, and Apple is not selling the Kindle book. Kindle remains principally the reading and library app on iPhone and iPad. Amazon says Kindle books bought through a browser can be read in the Kindle app when you use the same Amazon account (Amazon’s Kindle buying guidance).
How to buy a Kindle book from the app
- Update Kindle from the App Store, then open the app and sign in to the Amazon account that holds your Kindle library.
- Search for a book or open its store listing in Kindle.
- Tap Get Book. If asked, allow the app to open your default browser.
- On Amazon’s page, check that the listing is for the Kindle edition—not a print, audio, or other format—and sign in if necessary.
- Complete checkout on Amazon.com.
- Return to Kindle and refresh or sync your library, then open the book.
If the book does not appear right away, pull down to refresh or use the app’s sync function. Check that checkout actually completed and that Kindle is signed in to the same Amazon account you used on the website. Amazon’s purchase guidance explains the account link between buying and reading.

Why the button arrived in 2025
Before the change, Kindle users on iOS generally had to leave the app, open a browser, find the book on Amazon, and buy it there. Amazon support responses had directed customers to use a browser because the iOS app did not support in-app Kindle-book purchases (Amazon customer-support forum).
That arrangement reflected Apple’s App Store rules for digital goods. A developer selling digital content inside an app has historically been subject to Apple’s in-app payment requirements and commission structure, which can vary by program, developer status, geography, and transaction. Amazon’s May 2025 update offered a more direct route to its own website rather than adding Apple-processed checkout. What the Apple ruling did—and did not do
The change followed a U.S. court order in Epic Games v. Apple, not a lawsuit brought by Amazon. On April 30, 2025, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers found Apple in willful violation of the existing injunction. The order addressed Apple’s restrictions on qualifying external-purchase links and related buttons or calls to action, as well as fees or commissions on covered external purchases (April 30, 2025 order).

That ruling did not require Amazon to build a native Kindle checkout flow, nor did it mean Apple began processing Kindle purchases. Amazon chose to link users to its web store. In practical terms, the order changed the conditions under which apps could direct customers to external purchasing; the “Get Book” implementation is Amazon’s product decision and uses Amazon checkout.

The legal picture also continued to develop. A Ninth Circuit opinion issued December 11, 2025, left the external-link framework largely in place while saying Apple could potentially charge a narrowly tailored fee tied to genuinely necessary costs for linked-out purchases, sending that question back to the district court (Ninth Circuit opinion). So it would be too broad to say the 2025 order permanently eliminated every possible Apple fee.
Who can use it, and what may not work
The clearest availability described at launch is for users in the United States on iPhone or iPad, in the Kindle iOS app updated in May 2025 or later. App Store rules and external-purchase permissions differ by region, so do not assume the same button or flow is available worldwide. The U.S. App Store listing supports iPhone and iPad and, as reviewed, lists iOS 16.0 or later; app requirements can change, so check the live U.S. listing.

Not every item related to Kindle necessarily uses this path. A missing button may mean the app needs updating, the feature is unavailable in your storefront, the title or format is ineligible, or the listing is for a sample, library item, subscription, or other content type. The button should not be taken as a promise that the app can buy Audible audiobooks, Kindle Unlimited subscriptions, magazines, or every digital item Amazon sells.
If “Get Book” is missing
- Update Kindle in the App Store and check that your iPhone or iPad meets the app’s current system requirements.
- Confirm your storefront and Amazon region. The U.S. change does not establish worldwide availability.
- Check that the title has a Kindle edition available. You can search for it directly in Safari and buy from Amazon’s Kindle Store if necessary.
- If the app appears to have the wrong account state, sign out and back in, then sync.
If the link or purchase seems wrong
On the browser page, check the Amazon domain, the signed-in account, and the selected edition. Book listings can include multiple formats, editions, or regional variants; do not assume the first product displayed is the ebook. If a completed purchase is missing from the library, refresh or sync Kindle, close and reopen the app, and verify the purchase in the Amazon account used at checkout. If the browser purchase went to a different Amazon account, the book will be associated with that account instead.

The practical trade-off
The button removes some friction: you do not have to leave Kindle, open a browser, and search for the same title yourself. But the purchase and reading still happen in separate contexts, and the browser may ask you to authenticate again. It is a more convenient doorway to Amazon’s store—not full ecommerce inside Kindle.
For readers already invested in Amazon’s library, that may be all they need. Anyone choosing an ebook ecosystem from scratch should also consider how important retailer-specific libraries, device compatibility, and format flexibility are; a Kindle purchase is not automatically portable to another store’s ecosystem.
