2024 did not have one online main character or a single platform where everyone gathered. Instead, its most recognizable internet moments moved between music, sport, celebrity publicity, animal videos, AI search and social networks. Together, they showed an internet capable of collective delight—and quick to turn that attention into scrutiny, jokes or money.
This is a representative selection, not a statistical ranking of the year’s biggest trends. The moments matter because they crossed communities and made wider changes in online culture visible: how quickly a story can become a meme, how hard it is to control a viral image, and how commercial platforms now shape even apparently spontaneous fame.
When a real-world event became the punchline
In Glasgow, a Willy Wonka-themed experience promised a fantastical attraction. Promotional materials featured conspicuously odd language, including “Encherining Entertainment” and “Imagnation Lab”; reporting described the fliers as AI-generated. Attendees, however, encountered a sparsely decorated warehouse rather than the immersive spectacle the promotion suggested. Attendees effectively documented the gap between the promise and the experience, while the internet turned that evidence into satire. The episode captured a broader dynamic of 2024: promotional language and striking imagery can set expectations at scale, but social sharing can just as quickly make an event’s failure its defining feature.

Google’s AI answers became public evidence of AI’s limits
Google AI Overviews generated viral screenshots of bizarre answers, including suggestions involving glue on pizza, staring at the sun and eating a small rock each day. Google removed or limited some prominent examples, according to the retrospective. These incidents do not establish how the feature performed overall, or explain the technical causes of each answer. Their cultural importance was more immediate: people saw machine-generated responses presented within a familiar search product and began circulating examples that challenged their reliability.
In that sense, the memes worked like informal public testing. Users searched, noticed strange results and shared screenshots; other users examined the claims and added context. The story was not simply that an AI system could be wrong. It was that generative answers had moved into a mass-market interface, where visible mistakes could quickly become a trust problem.
“Brat” became a ready-made cultural identity
Charli XCX’s Brat was more than a music release in 2024. Its lime-green look and deliberately informal sensibility offered people an easy visual and verbal shorthand to reuse. “Brat” became a flexible attitude as well as an album reference, spreading through fan participation and into wider celebrity and political conversation. In July, Charli XCX described Kamala Harris as “brat” in a post that helped carry the word beyond music fandom.

The phenomenon worked because several things reinforced one another: music, design, artist identity and a concept simple enough to caption, color-code or imitate. It was not merely a marketing campaign; people gave the aesthetic new meanings as they used it. That participatory quality is part of why Brat became one of the year’s most recognizable online moods.
The Olympics supplied a stream of internet characters
The Paris Olympics gave online audiences a steady flow of clips and personalities to follow. Celine Dion’s performance of an Edith Piaf song became a major emotional moment. Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec drew attention for his relaxed-looking posture and apparent lack of elaborate equipment. Australian breakdancer Raygun became a subject of widespread discussion for her distinctive performance. In the United States, Peacock’s presentation and streaming access helped viewers engage with a broad range of events, as TechCrunch noted.
These moments show how a global sporting event becomes internet-native: competition produces the footage, streaming and social platforms distribute it, and viewers select the people and images that become shorthand for the event. That visibility can bring admiration and shared joy, but also ridicule or reductive attention. An athlete can be reduced to a single clip even when the performance—and the person—has a much larger context.

Moo Deng showed the reach—and cost—of cute virality
Moo Deng, a pygmy hippopotamus born at Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo on July 10, became an international online celebrity. Short clips of her energetic behavior, vocalizations and harmless biting were easy to watch and share. Unlike a complicated news story, her appeal needed little explanation: viewers could recognize the small, lively animal and pass the clip along.
But attention also had a physical-world consequence. The zoo faced visitor-management challenges, and reports described people throwing objects at Moo Deng. Her popularity illustrates that viral attention is not automatically harmless to its subject. A clip can bring a zoo publicity and visitors while increasing pressure on an animal and the people responsible for protecting it. Cuteness may travel frictionlessly online; care still has to happen in person.
The “holding space” interview turned publicity into a meme
During the Wicked film publicity cycle, a journalist said audiences were “holding space” for the lyrics to “Defying Gravity.” Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo reacted emotionally, and Grande reaching for Erivo’s finger became the image many viewers remembered. The exchange was an interview moment, not a scripted scene, but it quickly detached from its original context and was remixed online.

That ambiguity helped it travel. Viewers could read the visible reaction as sincere, as part of an unusually theatrical press tour, or as a moment shaped by the performance of celebrity publicity. The clip does not establish what either performer privately felt. What it does show is how an unscripted exchange can eclipse a conventional advertisement: the press tour provided the setting, while audiences supplied the interpretations and jokes.

Hailey Welch became famous after a street-interview clip featuring her sexually explicit phrase spread online. Her viral visibility was rapidly turned into commercial opportunities, including merchandise and a podcast. A cryptocurrency token known as HAWK became associated with the story and later collapsed amid a rug-pull-style controversy. Welch denied wrongdoing; claims about her responsibility should not be treated as settled fact. TechCrunch’s retrospective summarizes the episode and her denial.
The sequence—from clip to recognizable persona, products and speculative token—made the monetization pipeline unusually visible. But viral fame is not the same as lasting influence, a large audience is not automatically a loyal customer base, and commercial activity is not proof of a sustainable business. The speed of the transformation also raises a question of agency: when managers, sellers, platforms and promoters move quickly to build around someone’s image, the newly famous person may have limited control over how that identity develops.

Bluesky’s growth reflected a splintering social web
Bluesky opened to the public in February 2024 and built an identity as a smaller alternative to X. Its growth accelerated in Brazil after X was briefly banned there, and later in the United States after the 2024 election, according to TechCrunch. The significance was not just that another app gained attention. Users were moving among platforms with different communities and expectations, while the wider social web became less centered on a single venue.
That shift carries a trade-off. A smaller platform can feel culturally coherent; growth brings a broader audience and new moderation expectations. Questions about openness, community norms and commercial pressure become harder as a service expands. The available retrospective documents Bluesky’s rise and the debate around it, but it does not establish one universal reason people joined or prove that the service had displaced X.
What these moments reveal about 2024
These examples do not all have the same kind of importance. Some became memorable as jokes; others exposed risks around technology, public attention or money. Taken together, they point to a year in which internet culture was more participatory, commercial, AI-mediated and fragmented:

- Visual shorthand traveled fast. A warehouse photo, a lime-green album aesthetic, an Olympic clip or a viral animal video could cross communities more easily than a long explanation.
- Audiences helped make the story. Attendees documented the Willy Wonka event, users circulated AI-search failures, and viewers remixed the Wicked interview.
- Attention became an asset. Brat acquired a life beyond its release, while Welch’s sudden fame was quickly attached to products and a token controversy.
- Viral attention had consequences. It could bring shared pleasure, but also ridicule, pressure on an animal or reputational and financial risk for a newly famous person.
- No one platform held the whole conversation. Moments spread across services, while Bluesky’s growth reflected the search for alternatives and the continuing fragmentation of social media.
There is no authoritative count of the internet’s definitive moments for 2024, and English-language visibility is not the same as worldwide reach. The value of this selection is not that it claims to represent every community. It is that these moments make the year’s contradictions legible: people used the internet to celebrate, investigate, mock, promote and migrate—sometimes all at once.
