The headline referred to MyHeritage AI Time Machine, a photo-based image generator launched in November 2022. It turned 10–25 photographs of one person into historical-style portraits featuring themes such as ancient Greece, medieval life, Egyptian pharaohs, Renaissance art and 19th-century exploration.
There is an important update for anyone searching for the tool today: MyHeritage says AI Time Machine was sunset in January 2026 and is no longer available. The images were imaginative AI-generated interpretations—not authentic historical photographs or scientific predictions of how someone would have looked in the past.
What AI Time Machine was
MyHeritage, a genealogy and family-history company, created AI Time Machine to place a user’s face inside preset historical and fantasy scenes. The service combined text-to-image generation with personalization technology that MyHeritage said was licensed from Astria.
When the feature was active, users could generate a set of eight images for each selected theme. The results might show the same person as a medieval knight, an ancient Greek figure, an Egyptian pharaoh, an alchemist, a 19th-century explorer or a scientist from the 1930s. Other themes used Renaissance-style painting, Byzantine mosaics or artistic styles associated with painters such as Van Gogh and Rembrandt.

MyHeritage’s original announcement is available at the company’s AI Time Machine launch post.
Current status: the feature has been retired
Status: Sunset
Original launch: November 2022
Original access: MyHeritage’s website and mobile web browser
Current availability: No longer available as of January 2026
Old articles and social-media posts may still contain “try it now” instructions or links. Those references describe the 2022 product and should not be treated as evidence that AI Time Machine remains active.
How it worked when available
- Upload photographs: Users supplied multiple images of the same person.
- Prepare the identity model: MyHeritage used the photographs to create a personalized facial model.
- Enter basic details: Users described the person with a name or title and selected a gender.
- Choose themes: The service automatically generated some themes and allowed users to select additional ones.
- Download or share: Users could save individual portraits or collages.
At launch, MyHeritage said the initial model could take approximately 30 minutes to two hours to build. Additional themes generally took around one to two minutes. These were launch-era estimates, not current performance figures.
What photographs produced better results?
The original guidance recommended roughly 10 to 25 photographs, although upload limits and recommendations varied across versions. The strongest inputs were generally clear, varied photographs of one adult:
- Several close-ups, plus upper-body and full-body images
- Different angles, poses and expressions
- Different lighting conditions and backgrounds
- Photographs taken on different days
Users were advised to avoid sunglasses, hats, masks, heavy makeup, strong filters, group photographs and images containing distracting people. Mixing photographs from dramatically different ages could also make the identity model less consistent.
These details come from MyHeritage’s quality and photo-selection guidance and describe the discontinued service.

Why the portraits looked convincing
The effect came from combining recognizable facial characteristics with strong visual shorthand. Costumes, hairstyles, props, architecture, lighting, pose and color treatment quickly signaled an era or occupation. A user did not need image-editing experience to produce a dramatic before-and-after image, which helped the feature spread on social media.
But a convincing composition is not the same as an accurate reconstruction. A theme could alter the face to fit its style, add facial hair or makeup, change the hairstyle, or introduce dramatic lighting and perspective. The result might look polished while becoming less recognizable as the original person.
Was it really showing what someone would have looked like?
No. The phrase “what you’d look like” was a playful description, not a scientific claim.
AI Time Machine did not know the user’s historical clothing, occupation, social position, hairstyle, age, cultural setting or location. It did not use DNA to calculate an appearance, reconstruct an ancestor or establish that someone belonged to a particular class, profession, culture or ethnicity. It generated a modern person’s likeness within a preset visual concept.

It was not digital archaeology, genealogical evidence, forensic reconstruction or a historically grounded prediction.
How accurate were the images?
Results varied substantially. MyHeritage’s own guidance acknowledged that the technology could produce distorted facial features, imperfect anatomy, altered features and images that did not initially resemble the user.
Accuracy also depended on the theme. A simple portrait with moderate lighting might preserve more of the person’s likeness, while a theme involving elaborate headwear, painterly effects, unusual perspective or heavy costume styling could prioritize visual drama over identity.
Rank #4
The images were marked with watermarks to distinguish them from real photographs. That distinction mattered: despite their photorealistic appearance, they were synthetic images generated from the uploaded photographs and the selected theme.

Historical pricing
AI Time Machine was described as free for a limited introductory period. In December 2022, MyHeritage listed the following packages:
| Package | 2022 description | Listed price |
|---|---|---|
| Time Travel Package | About 60 themes and more than 480 images | Approximately $12 |
| Avatar Package | About 40 themes and 320 images | Approximately $10 |
| All-Inclusive Package | About 100 themes and 800 images | Approximately $18 |
These prices were historical 2022 listings only. They are not current purchase options because the feature has been discontinued. MyHeritage’s pricing and feature update is documented in this December 2022 announcement.

MyHeritage said AI Time Machine processed uploaded images on its servers and did not share them with third parties. In a later update, the company said uploaded photographs were deleted once the results were ready. Those statements describe MyHeritage’s representations about this older feature and should not automatically be applied to every current AI-photo service.
The original instructions also told users to obtain permission before uploading photographs of other people. That is especially important for friends, relatives, children, public figures and deceased people. Users were also warned against prohibited or offensive material, including nudity and images that could humiliate or offend someone.

MyHeritage has introduced other AI-photo features, but the available evidence does not establish a direct replacement for AI Time Machine’s historical-era portraits. For example, LiveMemory animates still photographs into short AI-generated video clips. It is an adjacent photo feature, not a tool for placing a face into ancient, medieval or other historical settings.
Anyone seeking a current service with similar historical portrait effects should verify its present availability, privacy terms, image-retention policy and pricing before uploading personal photographs. The discontinued AI Time Machine should not be used as a recommendation for a current purchase.
The broader lesson
AI Time Machine was effective at making a person visually legible inside a familiar historical aesthetic. It could suggest “ancient Greek,” “medieval,” or “19th-century explorer” through costume and atmosphere in seconds. What it could not do was recover a person’s real appearance in another era.
Its portraits were creative syntheses: part uploaded likeness, part generated face, and part preset artistic interpretation. That distinction is the key to understanding both the appeal of the 2022 viral trend and the limits of what its images proved.
