Spotify Error Code 3 usually appears with the message “The username or password is incorrect.” However, it does not prove that your password is wrong. The cause may be an incorrect sign-in method, phone-number login on desktop, stale app data, a VPN or firewall, a damaged installation, or a Spotify-side problem.
Start by testing your account in the Spotify web player. If you can sign in there but not in the desktop app, focus on the app, local data, and network rather than repeatedly changing your password.

Quick diagnosis
- Web player and mobile also fail: check your credentials, login method, account access, and Spotify’s service status.
- Web player works but desktop fails: suspect stale credentials, corrupted local data, installation problems, or desktop security software.
- Mobile data works but Wi-Fi fails: investigate the router, DNS, VPN, proxy, firewall, or network filtering.
Spotify does not currently appear to publish a dedicated official guide defining Error Code 3. Historical Spotify Community reports associate it with the displayed username-or-password error, but the code is best treated as a login troubleshooting label—not a definitive diagnosis.
1. Confirm how you created the Spotify account
Use the same authentication method you used when registering:

- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Easy to use: With a Google Play gift code, you never have to worry about expiration dates or fees.
- Email and password: enter the email address registered to Spotify and your password.
- Google, Apple, or Facebook: select the corresponding Continue with… button instead of entering a Spotify password.
- Phone number: use the phone-number and SMS-code method in the mobile app or web player. Spotify’s current guidance says phone-number accounts cannot sign in to the desktop app with the phone number. See Spotify’s account-recovery guidance.
If you are unsure which email belongs to the account, enter possible addresses on Spotify’s password-reset page. Spotify sends a reset message only when the address is registered to an account. A reset email also does not necessarily identify the account containing your playlists if you have multiple accounts.
2. Try the registered email address
In the desktop login form, try the email address linked to your Spotify account in the normal username field. Do not confuse your public display name with your account username.
Also check for accidental spaces, Caps Lock, a changed keyboard layout, and an outdated password inserted by your browser or password manager. Type the credentials manually once. Spotify Community login guidance supports using the account email as a practical alternative to the username: Spotify login troubleshooting.
3. Reset the password correctly
- Open Spotify’s password-reset page.
- Enter the account email address or username and select Send.
- Check your inbox, spam, junk, promotions, and filtered folders.
- Open the message, create a new password, and restart the desktop app.
- Enter the new password manually rather than relying on autofill.
If the reset message does not arrive, try another possible email address and request a new message. If Spotify says a reset link is invalid or already used, request another link and open the newest one in a private or incognito browser window. Repeated requests can invalidate older links. Never share a reset link, password, payment details, or authentication code.

4. Test the web player or another device
Sign in at the web player or on a phone. This separates an account problem from a desktop-app problem:
| Result | Likely direction |
|---|---|
| Login fails everywhere | Credentials, login method, account access, or a Spotify outage |
| Browser and phone work, desktop fails | Stale session, corrupted app data, installation, or desktop network conflict |
| Mobile data works but Wi-Fi fails | Router, DNS, VPN, proxy, firewall, or filtering |
| All devices fail during an incident | Spotify-side service problem; avoid repeatedly changing passwords |
Spotify recommends trying another device or the web player as part of general troubleshooting: Spotify playback and app troubleshooting.
5. Update, restart, and clear Spotify’s cache
These are the least disruptive app fixes:
- Quit Spotify completely, then reopen it.
- Install any available Spotify update.
- Restart the computer or phone.
- Clear Spotify’s cache using the current app settings.
On supported mobile versions, the cache control is under Settings and privacy → Data-saving and offline → Storage. Labels can vary by Spotify and operating-system version.
Clearing cache is different from clearing app storage or data. Storage clearing can sign you out and remove downloaded content. Use Spotify’s current instructions for version-specific guidance: Spotify reinstall instructions.

6. Check VPN, proxy, firewall, and network restrictions
For a short diagnostic test:
- Disconnect any VPN.
- Check the operating system’s proxy settings and disable an unnecessary proxy.
- Confirm that Spotify is allowed through the firewall.
- Check antivirus, web-filtering, and ad-blocking software for blocked Spotify connections.
- Try signing in through a phone hotspot.
If the hotspot works, the original network is the likely source of the problem. School, work, hotel, library, and public networks may restrict Spotify, and you may not have permission to change those settings. Do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled; add an approved exception or ask the network administrator instead.
Spotify’s network guidance covers Wi-Fi, mobile data, firewall checks, and offline connectivity: Spotify offline troubleshooting. Additional Community guidance discusses proxies, VPNs, ad blockers, and managed networks: Spotify connection troubleshooting.
7. Perform Spotify’s official clean reinstall
Use this step when browser login works but the desktop app continues to reject the same credentials. Reinstalling may remove damaged local files, but it cannot correct a wrong login method, an account restriction, or a Spotify outage.
Windows 10 and newer
- Close Spotify.
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Apps & Features.
- Select Spotify and uninstall it.
- Reinstall it from the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s official download source.
Windows Store and standalone installations can use different local paths, so follow the cleanup section in Spotify’s live reinstall instructions rather than deleting an old path copied from another guide.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What not to do
- Do not assume the displayed message proves the password is wrong.
- Do not keep trying a phone number in the desktop app when the account uses phone-number sign-in.
- Do not permanently disable a firewall or antivirus.
- Do not install cracked Spotify builds, registry cleaners, unofficial repair tools, or random “fix” utilities.
- Do not use a VPN as a guaranteed solution; disconnect it temporarily to test whether it interferes.
- Do not reinstall before considering that downloaded content will need to be downloaded again.
If Error Code 3 remains

- Contact Spotify Support or post in the official Community. Do not include passwords, reset links, or security codes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Spotify Error Code 3 always an incorrect password?
No. The message reports a failed username-or-password login, but the underlying cause can be the wrong provider login, phone-number sign-in on desktop, stale app data, network interference, or an outage.
Why can I log in on my phone but not my computer?
The account may be fine while the desktop app has stale credentials, corrupted local data, a damaged installation, or a VPN, proxy, firewall, or network conflict.
Can I use a phone number to log in to Spotify desktop?
Spotify’s current support guidance says phone-number accounts cannot use the phone number to sign in to the desktop app. Use the mobile app or web player instead.

Will reinstalling Spotify delete my playlists?
No. Playlists and account data are stored with your account, but downloaded music and podcasts are removed and must be downloaded again.
Does a VPN fix Spotify Error Code 3?
Not reliably. A VPN can interfere with connectivity or authentication, so disconnect it temporarily as a test rather than treating it as a permanent fix.
Should I use the Microsoft Store or Spotify’s direct installer?
Either official source is appropriate. Choose one, and follow Spotify’s current reinstall instructions because local file paths differ between installation types.
