Universal remotes work with many televisions, but no ordinary universal remote reliably controls every TV and every feature. A basic model usually handles infrared (IR) commands such as power, volume, mute, input, channels, and simple navigation. Modern smart-TV functions—including voice search, motion pointers, app launchers, and Bluetooth pairing—may require the original manufacturer remote, a compatible Bluetooth remote, or an app.
The practical question is not whether a remote is labeled “universal,” but whether it supports your TV’s communication method and the specific functions you need.
What “universal” means
Universal describes the range of devices and commands a remote can support; it does not mean every button on every television will work. Compatibility depends on the remote’s code library, the TV model, and how the TV receives commands. Sony notes that third-party remotes may use different code numbers for the same product, so a failed code does not necessarily mean the TV is unsupported. Sony explains universal-remote code differences here.

- Basic IR universal remote: Sends preprogrammed infrared codes and normally requires a clear line of sight. It is best for conventional televisions, cable boxes, DVD players, receivers, and basic controls.
- Learning IR remote: Copies commands from an original IR remote. It can fill gaps in a code library, but it generally cannot learn Bluetooth pairing, Wi-Fi commands, voice input, or motion sensing.
- IR-plus-Bluetooth remote: Can control some streaming boxes and smart-TV functions that do not use IR. Bluetooth pairing and device support are model-specific, not automatically universal.
- Hub-based or network remote: Uses a hub for IR and may also use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, IP control, apps, and macros. It can operate equipment inside cabinets but introduces setup, software, network, and vendor-support dependencies.
For example, SofaBaton’s X1S combines IR, Bluetooth, local IP control, macros, firmware updates, and Home Assistant support. That is a substantially different product from a low-cost code-based remote.

The five-question compatibility test
- What is the exact TV model? Brand alone is not enough. Record the model number from the TV label, settings menu, or original paperwork.
- What did the original remote use? It may have used IR, Bluetooth, proprietary RF, Wi-Fi, or a combination.
- Which functions matter? Separate basic needs—power, volume, input, and channels—from Home, app shortcuts, voice search, pointer control, and deep settings.
- Which other devices must be controlled? List streaming players, game consoles, cable boxes, soundbars, and receivers separately.
- Does the remote’s official compatibility list name those devices and methods? “Supports Samsung” or “works with all TVs” is not a guarantee of complete button-level support.
Why infrared TVs are the easiest
IR is the most predictable case. The remote sends light pulses to a receiver on the TV, so it normally must be aimed at the set. Cabinet doors, objects, bright sunlight, and another nearby television can interfere.
A compatible code may provide power, volume, mute, input selection, channel navigation, and basic menu controls while omitting special keys. The same brand can use different command sets across model families. A TV switching off proves only that one command worked; it does not prove full compatibility.
Why smart TVs are harder
Many smart-TV remotes use Bluetooth or proprietary radio for functions such as voice control, motion pointers, touchpads, and two-way status communication. A generic IR remote cannot reproduce those features unless the TV also exposes equivalent IR commands.

This is why a universal remote may turn on a smart TV and change its volume but fail to open Home, launch apps, activate voice search, or complete Bluetooth pairing. LG’s documentation, for example, ties webOS universal-remote setup to connected-device configuration and model-specific menus rather than one universal code process. See LG’s webOS setup guidance.

How HDMI-CEC changes the picture
HDMI-CEC is a control protocol, not a universal-remote code library. It lets compatible devices send commands over HDMI. Manufacturers use different names: Samsung Anynet+, LG SIMPLINK, Sony BRAVIA Sync, Philips EasyLink, Panasonic VIERA Link, and Sharp AQUOS Link.
CEC may handle power, automatic input switching, volume through a soundbar or receiver, and basic navigation of a connected player. It generally does not provide every app command, voice control, full TV settings access, or consistent behavior across all equipment. It may also be disabled by default. Roku’s CEC guide lists manufacturer names and limitations.
To troubleshoot CEC, connect devices directly by HDMI where possible, enable CEC on each device, power-cycle the setup, and test power, input, navigation, and volume separately. If devices switch inputs unexpectedly, disable CEC on one component at a time to identify the conflict.
What is most likely to work?
| Function | Basic IR remote | Bluetooth/RF remote | HDMI-CEC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | Usually | Usually, if compatible | Often |
| Volume and mute | Usually | Usually | Often |
| Input/source | Usually | Usually | Sometimes |
| Channel numbers | Often | Often | Rarely relevant to streaming devices |
| Directional navigation | Often | Usually | Basic navigation may work |
| Home and app launcher | Model-dependent | More likely | Limited |
| Voice search | Usually not | Device-specific | No |
| Pointer or gyro control | No | Device-specific | No |
| TV picture and audio settings | Limited | Device-specific | Usually not |
Roku also warns that its voice remote may control volume on some televisions without controlling power. Roku’s TV-control guidance is a useful reminder that partial compatibility is common.

Brand and platform examples
Roku TV versus a Roku player
Roku TV is a platform built into televisions from multiple manufacturers. A remote that controls a standalone Roku player should not automatically be assumed to control a Roku TV identically. Roku publishes separate guidance for Roku TV universal-remote codes and TV controls: Roku TV codes and TV-control limitations.
Samsung
Samsung’s One Remote can control supported connected devices through device setup and HDMI-CEC. Samsung’s process may require selecting the device type, connection path, HDMI port, and a power or channel test. This demonstrates how a manufacturer remote can coordinate devices, but it does not prove that every third-party remote can reproduce every Samsung smart-TV feature. Samsung’s setup instructions provide the model-specific details.
LG
LG uses SIMPLINK for HDMI-CEC, while webOS models may offer model-specific universal-remote and connected-device setup. Menu names can change by webOS version and model year, so use the manual for the exact TV.

Apple TV and other streaming devices
Apple TV 4K can be controlled through a compatible TV or receiver remote using HDMI-CEC, network control, or an IR learning process. On Apple TV, the learning path is Settings → Remotes and Devices → Learn Remote. Apple documents the process here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to program a universal remote
Code entry
- Turn on the TV manually.
- Hold the remote’s Setup, Program, or equivalent button until its indicator stays lit.
- Select the TV device mode.
- Enter a manufacturer code from that remote’s manual.
- Test power, volume, input, navigation, and Home.
- If only some functions work, try the next code listed for the brand or model family.
- Save the code only after testing the functions you actually need.
The exact sequence varies among GE, RCA, Philips, One For All, SofaBaton, and other brands. Follow the instructions for the specific remote rather than assuming one key sequence applies to all of them.
Automatic code search
Put the remote in TV setup mode, start its automatic search, and send power or channel commands until the TV responds. Save the code immediately, then test every important button. Automatic search can stop at a partially compatible code, so a successful power command is not enough.
Learning missing IR commands
Place the original and learning remotes facing each other, select a destination button, press the corresponding original button, wait for confirmation, and repeat for missing commands. Learning can copy IR signals, but normally cannot copy Bluetooth pairing, voice microphones, motion sensors, or network authentication.
Best Value
- Multi-device control – Operate up to four audio and video devices such as your TV, Blu-ray player, DVD player, cable or satellite receiver, soundbar, streaming media player or other compatible devices
- Best TV remote code library – Universal TV remote works with all major brands and supports thousands of the latest audio and video devices (not for use with radio frequency devices like Roku Streaming Sticks and Amazon Fire TV/Sticks)
- Simple setup – Add two AAA batteries (not included) and enjoy easy automatic code search and direct code entry programming, as well as master volume control to adjust the audio no matter which device is being used
- Preprogrammed for Samsung and Roku – Universal remote’s TV and STRM device buttons are preprogrammed for immediate use with Samsung TVs and Roku streaming media boxes (not compatible with Roku Streaming Sticks)
- Fully backlit with a stylish finish – The classic black finish adds a classic look to any decor; blue LED backlighting helps you see each button easily in dark or dimly lit rooms
Troubleshooting by symptom
- The TV powers on but volume does not: Try another code. Audio may be routed to a soundbar or receiver that needs separate programming.
- Volume works but power does not: The device may have partial compatibility; Roku documents this possibility for some TV models.
- Input works but Home does not: The remote may be sending basic IR commands while the smart interface expects Bluetooth or proprietary commands.
- The TV works but the streaming stick does not: The stick may use Bluetooth or RF. Check for explicit support or try HDMI-CEC.
- The original remote is needed for pairing: An IR remote generally cannot replace a Bluetooth pairing sequence.
- CEC changes inputs unexpectedly: Several devices may be competing for control. Disable CEC selectively to find the cause.
- A nearby TV also responds: IR is not room-aware. Reposition the equipment, cover one receiver during setup, or use addressable RF or network control.
- The TV is behind glass or inside furniture: Use a remote with an external IR blaster or hub.
- The code list is outdated: Look for an updateable database or a learning feature. A brand listing may not include a recently released model.
Which type should you choose?
- Choose a basic IR remote for an older or IR-controlled TV, cable box, DVD player, or receiver when you mainly need power, volume, input, channels, and navigation.
- Choose IR plus Bluetooth when you use Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV, or another device whose control method is explicitly supported.
- Choose a hub-based system when equipment is inside cabinets or you need macros such as “Watch TV,” multi-device activities, or IP control. Accept the higher cost and dependence on apps, Wi-Fi, firmware, and vendor support. SofaBaton’s X1S is an example of this category.
- Choose the manufacturer remote or official app when voice control, a pointer, deep TV settings, Bluetooth pairing, or unusual proprietary controls matter most.
SofaBaton advertises the U2 as supporting more than 6,000 brands and 500,000 devices, but that is a manufacturer code-library claim, not proof that every button works on every model. Treat similar “all devices” claims as marketing shorthand and check the official compatibility list. Logitech Harmony hardware should not be treated as a current mainstream recommendation: Logitech announced in 2021 that it was ending Harmony remote manufacturing. Read the manufacturing update.
The compatibility ladder
Evaluate a remote in stages:
- The TV turns on and off.
- Power, volume, mute, and input work.
- Smart-TV navigation and Home work.
- The streaming device responds.
- The soundbar or receiver responds.
- Activities and automation work reliably.
- Voice, pointer, and other proprietary features work.
A remote that reaches only the first two levels may still be an excellent replacement for a simple television. It is not a full substitute for a smart-TV remote if you depend on the upper levels.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Universal remotes work with most TVs at a basic level, especially when the TV uses IR. They do not universally reproduce every smart-TV feature. Match the remote to the TV’s communication method, verify the exact model and connected devices, and test more than the power button before buying—or keep the manufacturer remote or app for voice, pointer, pairing, and advanced settings.
