Yes, iTunes Match still exists in 2026. It scans your legally acquired music library, matches recognized songs to Apple’s catalog, uploads songs Apple cannot match, and makes the resulting library available through Sync Library on compatible devices.
It is not Apple Music’s full streaming catalog, and it is not a backup. If you already subscribe to Apple Music, you generally already have the equivalent personal-library synchronization feature.

What iTunes Match does
iTunes Match is an annual cloud-library synchronization service for your own music collection: CD rips, purchased downloads, live recordings, DJ edits, and other legally acquired files. You add the collection to the Apple Music app on a Mac or Windows PC. Apple then scans the library.
- Matched songs: Apple recognizes the recording and makes an Apple catalog version available in your cloud library.
- Uploaded songs: Apple cannot match the item, so an eligible copy is uploaded.
- Sync Library: This is the feature used to access the processed collection on other devices.
Apple’s current documentation still describes iTunes Match subscription and setup procedures. On modern Macs and Windows PCs, the service is managed through the Apple Music app. Older iTunes for Windows installations use the older term iCloud Music Library. See Apple’s current iTunes Match instructions and its Sync Library guide.

iTunes Match versus Apple Music
| Feature | iTunes Match | Apple Music |
|---|---|---|
| Syncs your personal library | Yes | Yes |
| Apple’s full streaming catalog | No | Yes |
| Offline listening | Your matched and uploaded library | Your library plus catalog downloads |
| Android support | No, according to Apple | Broader device support where available |
| Backup of original files | No | No |
| Billing | Annual; verify the live regional price | Monthly or other available plans |
An Apple Music subscription includes personal-library synchronization as well as access to Apple’s catalog, offline catalog downloads, and wider device support. Buying both services is therefore unnecessary for most people. The exception is a user who wants to keep Apple Music separate from an existing iTunes Match subscription for a specific account or billing reason.
Is iTunes Match available in 2026?
Yes, although availability and pricing vary by country or region. Apple’s support documentation continues to provide subscription instructions. The most reliable test is to open Apple Music, enable the iTunes Store section, and check whether iTunes Match appears under the Store’s Features area.
In the United States, older references commonly list a price of $24.99 per year. That should not be treated as a verified 2026 price without checking Apple’s live subscription screen. Apple’s current documentation confirms the annual subscription and automatic renewal by default, but the indexed support material does not establish the current US amount. Treat the price shown at checkout as definitive.
Who should use iTunes Match?
It is a good fit for:
- People with large CD-ripped collections.
- Listeners who own music unavailable in Apple’s streaming catalog.
- Apple-device users who want their personal collection on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC.
- People who do not need millions of streaming-catalog tracks.
- Users who value the possibility of downloading matched songs as Apple’s documented 256 kbps DRM-free AAC version.
It is a poor fit for:
- Anyone seeking a genuine backup or archival system.
- Android-only users or households requiring Android access to the personal library.
- Audiophiles who need guaranteed preservation of original lossless or hi-res files.
- Users wanting the full Apple Music catalog.
- Families that need separate personal libraries under one simple household arrangement.
- People who want platform-independent control without Apple’s matching process.
Limits, formats, and what is actually stored
Apple’s Windows user documentation lists a limit of up to 100,000 songs, excluding songs and music videos purchased from the iTunes Store. Individual files are limited to 200 MB. The same documentation describes matched songs as 256 kbps DRM-free AAC, also called iTunes Plus quality.
Apple’s user guide says other songs are stored at their original quality, but that statement should not be expanded into a promise of lossless or hi-res archival preservation for every upload. Apple does not make iTunes Match a guarantee that every original format, bit depth, sample rate, master, or metadata field will remain unchanged in the cloud.
If your collection contains ALAC, FLAC, WAV, AIFF, high-resolution files, rare masters, or irreplaceable recordings:
- Keep the original files.
- Maintain an independent backup.
- After matching or uploading, download a representative sample.
- Inspect the downloaded format, duration, metadata, and artwork before considering any local deletion.
Apple’s documented limits and matched-file format are summarized in its iCloud Music Library guide.

The source computer is the important starting point. Apple scans the local library, identifies songs it recognizes as available in the iTunes Store, and marks those songs as matched. Items it cannot match are uploaded if they meet Apple’s eligibility requirements. The cloud library then becomes accessible through Sync Library.
A large collection may take considerable time. Keep the source computer powered on and connected to the internet. Apple says that if the computer disconnects, processing resumes when the Apple Music app is opened again. The interface can show progress and, where available, provide pause and resume controls.
Do not assume that a match identifies the exact pressing or master in your collection. A title with the same name could represent a remaster, clean version, edit, live recording, or other edition. Apple’s public instructions do not guarantee exact edition matching.
How to download music for offline listening
On an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows device using Apple Music, find the song, album, or playlist in your synchronized library and use its download control. The item is then stored locally and can play without an internet connection.
In older Windows iTunes, Apple describes an iCloud Download button for downloading cloud-library items. If the button is absent, the item may already be stored locally. See Apple’s iCloud download documentation.
Keep these terms separate:
- Cloud availability: The item can be streamed or downloaded from the synchronized library.
- Local availability: A copy is physically stored on the device.
- Backup: An independent copy retained separately from Apple’s cloud system.
How to download a matched DRM-free version
For some users, the ability to obtain a clean Apple catalog copy is the main reason to use iTunes Match. A matched song may be available as Apple’s documented 256 kbps DRM-free AAC iTunes Plus version.
Use a cautious workflow:
- Back up the original file and preserve its metadata.
- Wait until the library finishes matching.
- Download the matched item to a controlled folder.
- Inspect its format, duration, album, artwork, and tags.
- Compare important recordings with the original.
- Only then decide whether the downloaded copy is suitable for everyday listening.
This is not a universal quality upgrade. Matching does not guarantee an identical pressing, remix, edit, or master, and unmatched uploads should not be assumed to receive the same 256 kbps AAC treatment. Never delete an irreplaceable original merely because a cloud status says “matched.”
If a song is not matched
Apple uploads songs it cannot match when they meet the service’s eligibility rules. Unmatched items may take longer to process, may retain practical format limitations, and may not receive Apple’s matched 256 kbps AAC version. Apple’s terms also say songs that are excessively large or fail other criteria may be ineligible. The user guide’s per-file limit is 200 MB.

Rare recordings and large files are precisely the items for which you should retain the original and maintain a separate backup. iTunes Match is best viewed as a convenient access layer, not as a master archive. Apple’s Media Services terms contain the relevant eligibility and cloud-library provisions.
Troubleshooting missing songs
Work through this sequence before re-importing anything:
- Check the Apple Account: Confirm every device uses the account that owns the subscription and library.
- Check the subscription: Make sure iTunes Match is active.
- Check Sync Library: Confirm it is enabled on the source computer and receiving device.
- Check processing: Look for an updating or paused cloud-library status.
- Search broadly: Search by artist, album, and title; look for duplicate or alternate editions.
- Check eligibility: Look for oversized files or content Apple could not process.
- Update software: Update macOS, Windows, Apple Music, iTunes, and device software.
- Restart carefully: Reopen the app and allow processing to resume.
- Protect the source: Keep the local original while diagnosing the problem.
- Re-add only when safe: Re-import a file only after confirming the original and its metadata are preserved.
Apple directs users with missing songs to its dedicated Sync Library troubleshooting flow.
If the wrong version appears
Compare the duration, album, artwork, and metadata. A cloud result may be a different release, remaster, clean version, edit, or live version. Treat matching as a convenience, not proof that the cloud copy is the same recording in your possession.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf processing appears stuck
- Keep the source computer powered on and online.
- Check for files over 200 MB or otherwise ineligible content.
- Use pause and resume if the interface offers it.
- Restart Apple Music or iTunes.
- Allow extra time for a large collection.
- Test with a small subset before rebuilding a library.
Do not repeatedly toggle Sync Library while processing is underway. Preserve the source library first.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Important warning: iTunes Match is not a backup
This matters especially for CD rips, rare releases, purchased files, lossless masters, and recordings that cannot be replaced. A synchronized cloud copy can disappear, change, fail to match, or become inaccessible when account or subscription conditions change.
What happens when you cancel iTunes Match?
The subscription renews automatically by default unless canceled. Before canceling, download the songs and playlists you want to keep, verify that downloaded files play locally, preserve your original library and metadata, and export or document important playlists.
Recommended Free Tools
- Download desired cloud items.
- Confirm they play without relying on cloud access.
- Keep the original source library.
- Back up downloaded and original files independently.
- Export or record playlist information.
- Check your Apple Account subscription page for the exact renewal date.
- Cancel according to Apple’s current subscription instructions, observing the applicable timing and refund terms.
Apple’s terms warn that access to iCloud Music Library content uploaded to Apple’s servers can end when the relevant membership ends. Because iTunes Match uses the same cloud-library infrastructure, the safest assumption is that cloud access may be lost after expiration. Do not wait until after cancellation to download material you need.
Alternatives to iTunes Match
Apple Music
Choose Apple Music if you want your personal collection and Apple’s full catalog in one service. Apple advertises more than 100 million songs, offline downloads, and support across a broader range of devices than iTunes Match. Verify current plans and pricing on Apple’s Apple Music product page or live subscription page.

Self-hosted music services
Services such as Plexamp, Jellyfin, and Navidrome can provide access to your own files through a computer, NAS, server, or hosted environment. Their main advantages are control over original files, broader platform access, and no Apple matching requirement. The trade-off is setup, storage, maintenance, and possible separate app or service costs.
Local storage and backup
External drives from vendors such as Western Digital or Seagate, NAS systems from Synology or QNAP, and backup services such as Backblaze address data protection rather than cross-device synchronization. For valuable collections, this is the infrastructure you need regardless of whether you also use iTunes Match.

Final verdict
iTunes Match remains worthwhile in 2026 for an Apple-focused listener who owns most of their music, needs cloud access to that collection, and does not need Apple’s streaming catalog. It is particularly useful for bringing CD rips and unavailable recordings to multiple Apple devices and for obtaining matched DRM-free AAC copies where Apple recognizes the songs.
Choose Apple Music instead if you want catalog streaming, Android or broader device support, and personal-library syncing in one subscription. Choose a self-hosted service plus proper backups if preserving original files and platform independence matters more than convenience.
The non-negotiable rule is simple: use iTunes Match for synchronization and access, never as your only copy of your music.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is iTunes Match discontinued in 2026?
No. Apple still documents iTunes Match subscription and setup in 2026, although availability varies by country or region and the service is less prominent because Apple Music includes equivalent personal-library synchronization.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: iTunes Match still works in 2026, but it is a personal-library synchronization service—not Apple Music’s catalog and not a backup. It makes the most sense for Apple users with owned music who want convenient access across devices.
