That distinction matters. Clubhouse has demonstrated a product comeback and a strategic pivot. It has not yet demonstrated a verified mass-audience comeback.
What happened to the original Clubhouse?
Clubhouse became famous because it made conversation feel unusually immediate. The app was initially invite-only, voice-first, and organized around live rooms that people could enter, leave, or listen to without appearing on camera. A user might discover a journalist, investor, celebrity, creator, or specialist discussing a subject in real time, then move between rooms in search of something unexpected.
The timing amplified the appeal. During the pandemic, many people were physically isolated and looking for ambient social contact. Live audio offered a sense of being around other people without the demands of video. The invite system also created scarcity, status, and curiosity.

But the decline cannot be explained only by the end of lockdowns. Several pressures arrived at once:
- Reopening restored many in-person social activities that had made digital companionship especially valuable.
- Major platforms copied or introduced live-audio features, reducing Clubhouse’s distinctiveness.
- Once access became less exclusive, the invitation-based novelty weakened.
- Live rooms required enough hosts and listeners to be present at the same time, making quality and density difficult to maintain.
- Casual users could miss the best conversations entirely if they were offline at the right moment.
- Creators faced difficult discovery and monetization questions.
- Moderation, harassment, privacy, and trust concerns complicated public voice communities.
- The network effect became a network reset: former users would return only if their friends, favorite hosts, and preferred communities were still active.
Clubhouse itself acknowledged that a purely live model could create a poor experience when people were not online simultaneously. That problem helps explain why the company began building asynchronous communication rather than treating live rooms as the entire product. Clubhouse’s announcement of “the new clubhouse” described this shift directly.
What does “comeback” mean here?
There are three different claims people can make about Clubhouse, and they should not be confused.
1. A product comeback
Clubhouse remains available and maintained. The U.S. App Store listing identifies Alpha Exploration Co. as the developer and seller, continues to describe live voice chats and asynchronous communication, and records recent version-history entries, including version 26.07.02 in a July 2026 snapshot. The listing also showed a 4.8 rating from approximately 790,000 ratings.
Those are dated App Store signals, not permanent facts. Version numbers, compatibility requirements, ratings, rankings, and prices can change. 2. A strategic comeback
Clubhouse is trying to broaden its use case:
- from public rooms toward friend-based interaction;
- from synchronous audio toward asynchronous voice;
- from distant follower relationships toward closer social connections;
- from an occasional live-audio destination toward a repeat-use messaging utility;
- from pandemic-era novelty toward a smaller, more persistent community product.
In September 2023, Clubhouse introduced Chats, voice-only group conversations that people could visit and contribute to on their own schedules. A Chat is not simply a conventional live room with a different name; its strategic purpose is to reduce the requirement that everyone be present at exactly the same time.

In February 2024, Clubhouse added custom voice messages that allow typed text to be rendered in the sender’s voice. TechCrunch’s coverage presented the feature in the context of Clubhouse’s effort to remain relevant after the platform’s user drop-off.
3. An audience comeback
A genuine audience recovery would require current evidence: monthly or weekly active users, retention, downloads, daily rooms, listening time, creator growth, repeat Chat participation, paid conversion, or sustained independent measurement.

TechCrunch, citing Sensor Tower, reported that Clubhouse’s monthly active users in January 2024 were 93% below the platform’s June 2021 peak. That is an important historical indicator, but it is not a measurement of August or September 2026 usage and should not be used to claim that the app is currently shrinking.
Likewise, App Store availability and a high accumulated rating show that the product persists and has generated positive sentiment among many users. They do not prove current activity, retention, or cultural relevance.
What Clubhouse is now
The most accurate description is a hybrid live-audio and audio-messaging app.
- Live rooms: Public or community-based voice conversations remain part of the product’s identity.
- Asynchronous Chats: Groups can exchange voice contributions without requiring every participant to arrive simultaneously.
- Private social communication: The newer direction places greater emphasis on friends and closer communities.
- Custom voice messages: Text can be rendered in a sender’s voice, although current technical, consent, and privacy details should be checked before treating this as equivalent to unrestricted voice cloning.
- Creator and paid features: The product includes monetization mechanisms such as subscriptions and virtual coins in the iOS listing.
Clubhouse has not abandoned live audio. Its official website still positions the service around live voice chats, communities, panels, and listening without video. The change is that live rooms are no longer the complete explanation of what the app is.

Why add asynchronous voice?
The logic is straightforward. Live rooms impose a scheduling problem: users must be available at the same time, and a room must have enough people to feel worthwhile. Asynchronous voice lets participation fit around work, school, family responsibilities, time zones, and different daily routines.
Voice also carries tone, pacing, hesitation, and emotion that text often loses. A smaller friend group may be easier to retain than a vast public audience dependent on celebrity hosts. A messaging habit can create more frequent, lower-effort openings than a scheduled room.
This may make Clubhouse more sustainable. It may also make it less distinctive. Voice messages already compete with established behavior in WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Discord, Telegram, and iMessage. Clubhouse’s challenge is not simply to add voice to messaging; it must persuade people that its combination of voice, community, and discovery is better than tools they already use.
Does the pivot solve Clubhouse’s original problems?
Where the strategy could work
- Users can participate without arranging a precise meeting time.
- Friend groups and smaller communities may be easier to keep active.
- Hosts become less dependent on celebrity audiences and large public rooms.
- Voice retains more emotional texture than ordinary text messaging.
- Private or semi-private groups can provide a clearer reason to return.
Where it could fail
- Longtime users may have wanted public discovery, not a replacement for ordinary messaging.
- Users’ original contacts may already have left, making a friend-based restart difficult.
- Custom voice features raise questions about consent, impersonation, accessibility, and the handling of voice-derived data.
- Moving toward private communication could reduce the serendipity that made Clubhouse famous.
- The app may struggle to explain whether it is a public social network, a group-messaging service, a creator platform, or all three.
The strategic question is therefore not merely whether Clubhouse is adding features. It is whether the company is preserving its advantage or abandoning the very quality that made the product memorable.

There is credible first-party evidence of continued investment and experimentation, but investment is not the same as success.
In 2021, Clubhouse announced funding and said it intended to invest in infrastructure, discovery, trust and safety, and creator monetization in “Welcoming More Voices.” It also launched creator Payments, initially rolling out the ability to send payments broadly while testing creator receipt in waves. The company said 100% of the payment would go to creators, with the sender paying a card-processing fee to Stripe. The company’s product blog documents major changes through 2024, including Chats and custom voice, while the 2026 App Store listing indicates that the app remains maintained and monetized. Together, these facts establish persistence and product experimentation. They do not establish user growth, profitability, or a successful mass comeback.
How Clubhouse makes money now
The U.S. App Store snapshot reviewed for this article listed Clubhouse Plus monthly plans at $4.99, $5.99, and $6.99, annual plans at $49.99 and $59.99, and coin packages ranging from $0.49 for 25 coins to $24.99 for 1,750 coins.
These are platform-, geography-, tax-, promotion-, and date-sensitive purchase signals. They should be rechecked before publication or purchase. There is no reason to assume that a paid Plus plan is required to participate in ordinary live rooms or Chats. For most returning users, the sensible order is to test activity first and spend later.
Is Clubhouse worth returning to?
It may be worth trying if you miss voice-first communities and have a specific reason to return. Search for active friends, hosts, clubs, or topics before judging the entire network.
Return if you:
- already know people or communities that remain active there;
- want live conversation without appearing on camera;
- prefer smaller communities to public broadcasting;
- are willing to test asynchronous Chats rather than expecting the 2021 experience;
- want to experiment with voice-based creator interaction or monetization.
Do not return expecting:
- the original invite-only cultural moment;
- a nonstop hallway of high-profile rooms;
- guaranteed activity in every niche;
- current, transparent audience metrics;
- a mature desktop workflow equivalent to dedicated community platforms.
Privacy-conscious users should also examine how the current app handles voice messages, contacts, recordings, transcripts, notifications, and custom-voice data. Deaf or hard-of-hearing users, blind users, and screen-reader users should test captions, transcripts, navigation, and audio controls rather than assuming that a voice-first product is accessible.

- Install or update the app and verify current platform and regional availability.
- Search for three specific communities or hosts you would genuinely use.
- Check activity at different times, because live-room density can vary sharply by schedule and time zone.
- Try both formats: attend a live room and inspect how asynchronous Chats work.
- Evaluate quality, not just volume: look for useful moderation, repeat participants, and conversations worth returning to.

- Delay Plus or coin purchases until the free experience proves that your network is active.
