Whatever happened to the dog from ‘Air Bud’? The original dog was Buddy, a real Golden Retriever rescued and trained by Kevin DiCicco. Buddy completed the 1997 film, then died in February 1998 at age nine after synovial cell sarcoma led to amputation of a hind leg; later films used other dogs.
That answer is easy to blur because the movie character called Buddy continued for decades. The real animal actor did not. The franchise’s later dogs, fictional puppies, and announced 2027 continuation belong to a different chapter of the story.
Key takeaways
- Buddy was the real Golden Retriever who performed the basketball tricks in the original Air Bud, released in 1997.
- Kevin DiCicco found Buddy as a stray near Yosemite in the late 1980s and trained his natural ball-catching ability into a public performance act.
- Buddy died in February 1998 at age nine after synovial cell sarcoma affected his right hind leg and led to amputation.
- Buddy did not perform in Air Bud: Golden Receiver or the later sequels; other trained Golden Retrievers portrayed the recurring fictional character.
- The announced film Air Bud Returns is scheduled for January 22, 2027, but its new Buddy is not the original 1990s dog.
Whatever happened to the dog from ‘Air Bud’?
Buddy died in February 1998, only months after the original Air Bud reached theaters. Published accounts commonly report February 10 as the date of death, but the day is not consistently documented. Buddy was nine years old and had developed synovial cell sarcoma in his right hind leg; veterinarians amputated the leg before he died.
The original movie had already been completed, so Buddy was not killed during filming. The available evidence places his serious leg problem near the end of production or afterward. Contemporary and later reporting about Buddy’s owner and illness supports the careful version: Buddy completed the first film, became ill, underwent amputation, and died before the sequel was made.

Who was the real Buddy?
The dog audiences remember was a real Golden Retriever named Buddy, owned and trained by Kevin DiCicco. DiCicco encountered Buddy as a stray near a family cabin in the Yosemite area in the late 1980s. The dog was disheveled but showed an unusual interest in chasing, catching, and redirecting balls.
DiCicco developed that behavior into a basketball and multisport act. Buddy appeared in public performances and television segments before Hollywood turned the idea into a family film. A 1992 Los Angeles Times report about DiCicco and Buddy documents the earlier performance career, years before the 1997 movie.
Buddy’s ability was not simply a movie trick created through editing. The fictional story follows a boy who discovers a dog capable of playing basketball, but the production was built around Buddy’s genuine ability to propel a ball toward a hoop. Producer Robert Vince reportedly doubted the claim until DiCicco demonstrated Buddy’s skill in person. E!’s account of Buddy’s pre-film career and the production describes how the real performance inspired the film.

The date deserves a qualification. February 10, 1998, is repeated widely in secondary references, while other reporting gives only the month and age. Therefore, “Buddy died in February 1998, reportedly on February 10, at age nine” is more accurate than presenting February 10 as an independently confirmed official date. The compiled reference account of Buddy’s biography records the commonly reported details, while later news coverage also discusses the illness and amputation.
Was Buddy in the Air Bud sequels?
No. The original Buddy was not in Air Bud: Golden Receiver or the later Air Bud movies because he was ill and had died before those productions continued. Other trained Golden Retrievers performed the animal role, while the movies treated “Buddy” as a continuing fictional character.

| Dog or identity | What it was | Where it belongs | What viewers should know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buddy | Kevin DiCicco’s real Golden Retriever | Air Bud (1997) | The original performer; died in February 1998 |
| Later trained Golden Retrievers | Successor animal performers | Golden Receiver and later sports films | They portrayed the movie character but were not the original Buddy |
| B-Dawg, RoseBud, Bud-Dha, MudBud, and Budderball | Fictional puppies in the franchise | Air Bud: Golden Receiver and later Air Buddies productions | They are descendants within the story world, not evidence that the real Buddy continued acting |
| New Buddy | A new Golden Retriever character and performer | Air Bud Returns | Part of the announced 2027 continuation, not the original 1990s dog |
The distinction between the real animal and the fictional continuity is important. In the films, Buddy becomes a father and the franchise expands around his fictional puppies. In reality, the original performer had died in 1998. The Disney description of Air Buddies presents the puppies as part of the movie universe, not as a record of the original dog’s later life.
How did the franchise continue after Buddy’s death?
Kevin DiCicco bred or trained dogs descended from Buddy to help continue the sporting-dog act and support the franchise. However, public documentation does not consistently establish the identity, lineage, and complete career history of every dog used in later productions. It is accurate to say that successor dogs took over the performance role; it is not accurate to label every later performer a directly documented descendant without production-specific evidence.
The franchise itself continued through sports-themed Air Bud films and the Air Buddies spin-offs. Air Bud Entertainment’s official franchise page treats the films as one larger fictional world, which explains why the character can keep appearing even though the original animal actor cannot.

Is the original dog returning in Air Bud Returns?
No. Air Bud Returns is an announced continuation featuring a new boy and an extraordinary Golden Retriever named Buddy; it does not bring back the original dog, who died in 1998. The official announcement lists January 22, 2027, as the scheduled release date. Because that date is future-facing, readers should verify the release information if this article is read near or after 2027.
The official Air Bud Returns FAQ provides the announcement and scheduled date. The new film can continue Buddy’s cultural legacy, but “Buddy” in that project refers to a new character and performer rather than the Golden Retriever trained by DiCicco.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is Buddy’s legacy?
Buddy’s lasting appeal comes from the unusual overlap between a real animal performance and a fictional family-movie premise. DiCicco found a stray dog with an exceptional instinct for balls, trained that instinct into a repeatable act, and helped turn it into the central idea of a successful film. Buddy’s death soon afterward gives the original movie a sharply different context when viewed today.

Buddy was a real Golden Retriever, he completed the 1997 film, and he died at nine in February 1998.
