Five years after cancellation, Michael Sheen’s forgotten psychological thriller is Prodigal Son, the Fox drama in which Sheen plays imprisoned serial killer Martin Whitly. The complete series has two seasons and 33 episodes, and U.S. listings currently provide several streaming, digital-purchase, and physical-media ways to watch it.
The headline’s timing needs one qualification: Fox canceled Prodigal Son in May 2021, so a January 2026 publication is roughly four years and eight months later, not a precise five-year anniversary. The new availability also does not mean the show has been revived.

What show has Michael Sheen as a serial killer?
Prodigal Son is the show in which Michael Sheen plays Dr. Martin Whitly, an imprisoned serial killer known as “The Surgeon.” The Fox psychological thriller follows Whitly’s son, Malcolm Bright, played by Tom Payne, a criminal psychologist who uses his understanding of murderers to help the NYPD while fearing that his father’s darkness may be part of him.
The series is built around an unusually direct family conflict. Malcolm was the person who exposed his father, but Martin remains a powerful presence in his life from prison. Martin can be charming, perceptive, manipulative, and frighteningly calm; Malcolm must repeatedly decide whether insight gained from his father is a professional advantage or a psychological trap.

Why does Prodigal Son work as a psychological thriller?
Prodigal Son combines a weekly murder investigation with a continuing family thriller. Malcolm applies criminal psychology to NYPD cases, while conversations with Martin turn the central father-son relationship into a second mystery: how much of Malcolm’s skill comes from training, how much comes from trauma, and whether the son can escape the identity his father forced on him.
| Story engine | What the viewer gets | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Procedural cases | Malcolm helps investigate murders with the NYPD. | Episodes often provide a case-of-the-week resolution. |
| Family thriller | Martin advises, provokes, and destabilizes Malcolm from prison. | The emotional danger continues after an individual case ends. |
| Psychological conflict | Malcolm tries to understand killers without becoming like his father. | The protagonist’s expertise is inseparable from his trauma. |
That mixture makes the show a better fit for viewers who want character-driven crime drama rather than a straightforward police procedural. The cases provide structure, but Michael Sheen’s performance and the uneasy relationship with Malcolm are the series’ defining attractions.
What happened to Prodigal Son?
Fox canceled Prodigal Son after two seasons in May 2021, ending the original run after the second-season finale. TVLine’s cancellation report identified the decision as the end of the Fox drama and the loss of a planned third season; contemporary coverage from Entertainment Tonight reported the same outcome.
Fox had renewed the drama for season two on May 21, 2020. In the network’s official renewal announcement, Michael Thorn, then Fox’s President of Entertainment, praised the performances and the show’s unusual family dynamic. The announcement quoted Thorn describing Tom Payne and Michael Sheen as going “head-to-head in one of most unique family relationships on television.”
The phrase “five years after cancellation” is therefore rounded headline language, not an exact anniversary. Fox canceled the series in May 2021, while the supplied headline was published in January 2026—roughly four years and eight months later. “Forgotten” is also editorial framing, not a measured claim about the size of the show’s audience.

Where can I watch Prodigal Son in the U.S.?
In the U.S., the supplied research shows a current Prime Video title listing for Prodigal Son, alongside listings for Netflix, HBO Max, HBO Max Amazon Channel, and YouTube TV. The same availability data lists digital purchase paths through Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home.
| Access route | U.S. listing in the research | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Prime Video | Title listings for the series and season one | Whether episodes are included with the relevant subscription, offered for purchase, or subject to regional account settings. |
| Subscription services | Netflix, HBO Max, HBO Max Amazon Channel, and YouTube TV | Current catalog status and whether both seasons are available. |
| Digital purchase | Amazon Video, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home | Season-by-season pricing, episode availability, and device compatibility. |
| Physical media | Complete-series Blu-ray and DVD-R retail listings | Seller identity, stock, format, region, and whether the listing is new or used. |
Streaming rights are volatile, and the research is U.S.-specific. A Prime Video title page does not by itself prove that every episode is included in a particular Prime subscription tier. Check the platform page immediately before watching, especially if the goal is to stream both seasons rather than buy individual episodes or seasons.
How many seasons and episodes does Prodigal Son have?
Prodigal Son has two seasons and 33 episodes in total. Season one contains 20 episodes, and season two contains 13. The complete two-season run gives viewers a finished starting point, but the series was canceled after season two and the streaming listings do not represent a revival or an ordered third season.

Who is in the cast?
Michael Sheen plays Dr. Martin Whitly, also called The Surgeon, the incarcerated serial killer whose intelligence and emotional control make him the show’s most unsettling figure. Tom Payne plays Malcolm Bright, Whitly’s son and the criminal psychologist at the center of the investigations.
- Michael Sheen — Dr. Martin Whitly/The Surgeon: Malcolm’s imprisoned father and a serial killer who continues to influence his son.

Is Prodigal Son worth watching?
Prodigal Son is worth considering if you want a crime series that places a disturbing family relationship alongside its investigations. The strongest reason to watch is not simply the serial-killer premise; it is the contradiction at the center of Malcolm’s career. Malcolm is useful to detectives precisely because he understands people like Martin, yet every insight raises the possibility that his father has shaped him more deeply than he wants to admit.
The format also sets expectations. Viewers seeking a purely serialized thriller may find the weekly cases interrupt the family storyline, while viewers who prefer self-contained investigations may find Martin and Malcolm’s continuing conflict the most compelling material. The two-season length makes the series relatively manageable, but cancellation means the broader story ends without a third season.

Reception figures should be read as platform metrics rather than universal critical consensus. The July 27, 2026 JustWatch listing displays an IMDb user rating of 7.6/10 and a JustWatch platform rating of 85%; those figures can change as platforms update their data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can I buy Prodigal Son on Blu-ray?
Yes. Physical editions provide an alternative when streaming rights change. Warner Archive released Prodigal Son: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray on August 24, 2021, according to the Blu-ray.com release listing. Current retail listings also identify complete Seasons 1 and 2 editions on Blu-ray and DVD-R, but the exact seller, stock, format, and price can vary.
Collectors who want offline access can look for Prodigal Son complete series Blu-ray listings, then confirm that the edition contains the seasons they want. A season-two Blu-ray is not automatically the same product as a complete-series set, and a DVD-R listing should not be confused with a pressed Blu-ray release.

What should new viewers know before starting?
- Expect two formats at once: murder investigations supply the weekly structure, while Malcolm and Martin’s relationship supplies the continuing psychological story.
- Expect a completed but canceled run: all 33 original episodes are available through changing U.S. streaming, digital, or physical-media routes, but no season three is supported by the evidence.
- Check the access terms: a service can list the title without including every episode in a specific subscription plan.
- Choose the physical edition carefully: verify whether a listing is for season one, season two, both seasons, Blu-ray, or DVD-R.
