Netflix Not Going Past 25%: How to Fix the Loading Problem

Netflix not going past 25% is a reported loading symptom, not a confirmed universal error code. Use a complete device restart, network restart, title and device comparisons, connection checks, Wi-Fi testing, and app refreshes to locate the problem safely.

Netflix not going past 25% is usually a loading or connectivity symptom, not a confirmed Netflix error code with one known fix. Fully restart the TV or streaming device, restart the modem and router, test another title and device, check the Netflix connection, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet before resetting anything.

The 25% wording appears in user reports involving NVIDIA Shield, Fire TV, and smart-TV setups, but the reports are anecdotal. Netflix’s official guidance identifies device data, app state, weak or unstable connections, congestion, DNS, and custom network settings as possible causes rather than assigning a diagnosis to the number 25.

Key takeaways

  • Netflix not going past 25% is a reported loading symptom, not a documented universal Netflix error code.
  • A complete power restart means unplugging the affected device, pressing its power button once, and waiting one minute—or leaving it unplugged for three minutes—not merely using standby.
  • Restarting the modem and router, then checking the Netflix connection or Fast.com, separates local network trouble from an app or device problem.
  • Testing another title, another device, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet helps localize the failure without proving a single cause.
  • Custom VPN, proxy, DNS, filtering, or manually configured network settings can interfere with Netflix access and should be restored to defaults for testing.

Why is Netflix not going past 25%?

Netflix not going past 25% does not identify one confirmed cause. Netflix’s official troubleshooting guidance groups stuck loading with device data that needs refreshing and network problems that prevent Netflix from loading, while buffering guidance points to a weak or unstable connection. Reports from NVIDIA Shield, Fire TV, and other setups show that viewers use “25%” to describe the symptom, but Netflix does not document 25% as a standalone error code. See the Netflix stuck-loading guidance and the separate reports from Shield users, Fire TV users, and NVIDIA Shield users.

The most useful approach is to treat 25% as a localization clue. The steps below determine whether the likely fault is one title, the Netflix app, the TV or streaming player, Wi-Fi, the router, DNS, the ISP, or a wider Netflix-side incident.

What should you test before changing settings?

Test a second Netflix title first. Then try Netflix on a phone, computer, or another TV-connected device using the same account and home network. These comparisons narrow the likely fault domain, but they are not definitive diagnoses.

What happens What it suggests Next step
Only one title or episode stops at 25% A title-specific or playback-path problem is possible Record the title and episode, then test another title and device
Every title fails on one TV or player The app, device data, firmware, local connection, or hardware is more likely Restart the device, refresh Netflix, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
Every device fails on the same home network The router, ISP connection, DNS, or home-network configuration is more likely Restart the network and test Fast.com or Netflix’s connection check
Netflix fails on several networks and devices A broader service or account issue becomes more plausible Check Netflix support or contact Netflix after confirming the local tests

How do you fully restart a TV or streaming device?

A complete power restart is the safest first fix for Netflix stuck at 25%. Netflix advises unplugging the affected TV or streaming device, pressing the device’s physical power button once, waiting one minute—or leaving the device unplugged for three minutes—and then reconnecting it. Turn the device on and retry Netflix. Netflix specifically distinguishes this process from leaving a device locked, sleeping, or in standby; the official stuck-loading instructions provide the platform-specific guidance.

For Fire TV, Roku-style players, and similar TV-connected devices, turn the device fully off rather than relying on sleep or standby. If the device has no accessible physical power button, follow its normal full-power-off procedure and disconnect its power supply. Avoid a factory reset at this stage because a power restart is reversible and does not erase saved settings.

How do you restart the modem and router?

Restarting the home network can clear a temporary connection or routing problem. Turn off or unplug the TV or streaming player. Unplug the modem and, if the router is a separate device, unplug the router too. Wait 30 seconds, reconnect the modem first, and wait for its normal connection lights. Reconnect the separate router, wait for it to reconnect, then turn the streaming device back on and test Netflix again. Netflix describes this sequence in its buffering and slow-loading guidance.

  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Some modems and routers take longer than 30 seconds to restore service. Do not interpret missing connection lights during the restart as evidence that Netflix is broken. If other websites and apps also fail after the equipment reconnects, the home internet connection deserves attention before the Netflix app.

How can you check whether the connection reaches Netflix?

Use Netflix’s built-in Check your Network option when the TV or streaming device provides it. On a computer or mobile device, open Fast.com and allow the test to complete. Netflix recommends checking the connection and comparing the result with its current internet-speed recommendations.

A speed test is a snapshot of the connection at that moment, not proof that the Netflix app, television firmware, or individual title is healthy. Record whether Netflix fails on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or both. Netflix explains that congestion can occur along the path between Netflix, the ISP, and the home network in its explanation of how Netflix streams video.

Will improving Wi-Fi fix Netflix stuck at 25%?

Improving Wi-Fi can help when the 25% hang is caused by a weak signal, interference, router placement, or local wireless congestion. Move the router and streaming device closer together, keep the router in an open location rather than on the floor or inside furniture, and reduce nearby sources of wireless interference. Netflix lists these measures in its official buffering recommendations.

For a more useful comparison, temporarily place the TV or streaming player near the router or connect the device directly to the router. If Netflix works over Ethernet but still stops at 25% on Wi-Fi, the result points toward wireless signal quality, interference, router configuration, or local congestion. The result does not prove that the Netflix account is healthy or that a new router is required.

If your TV or streaming player has an Ethernet port, an Ethernet cable for smart TV can provide a low-cost wired comparison with Wi-Fi. Use the cable as a diagnostic or possible connectivity improvement—not as a guaranteed cure. A wired test cannot repair an ISP outage, faulty app, unsupported hardware, or a Netflix-side incident.

Could VPN, proxy, or DNS settings cause the 25% loading problem?

Custom network settings can prevent Netflix from reaching the services it needs. If the household uses a VPN, proxy, custom DNS, filtering service, ad-blocking DNS, or manually configured network settings, restore the device or router to its default settings and retry Netflix.

Netflix’s guidance for error NW-3-6 also recommends checking custom modem settings, VPN or proxy settings, and custom DNS. Netflix tells users to ask their ISP to check access to secure.netflix.com, appboot.netflix.com, uiboot.netflix.com, and fast.com, and to investigate DNS problems on the modem, router, device, or DNS servers. See the Netflix NW-3-6 troubleshooting page.

Changing DNS to Google DNS, Cloudflare DNS, or another public DNS is not a guaranteed solution. A different DNS server can be used as a diagnostic comparison when the default DNS path appears faulty, but restore the original settings if the test does not help or causes other connectivity problems.

How do you refresh Netflix on the device?

After the power and network tests, refresh Netflix using the options available on the affected platform. Sign out of Netflix and sign back in, install available Netflix or device-firmware updates, and reinstall the Netflix app if the platform supports it. Netflix’s device-specific guidance also may recommend resetting the platform or contacting the device manufacturer.

Action Diagnostic value Risk and cost When to use it
Power restart Checks whether temporary device state or app data is involved Low risk; free First
Router and modem restart Checks temporary home-network or connection-path problems Low risk; free; briefly interrupts internet access After or alongside the device restart
Second title or device Separates title-specific, device-specific, and network-wide symptoms Low risk; free Before destructive changes
Ethernet comparison Separates Wi-Fi trouble from broader connection problems Usually low cost; requires a suitable port and cable When Wi-Fi is suspected
Sign out, update, or reinstall Refreshes app data or platform software Usually reversible; requires sign-in details When one device still fails
Device reset or factory reset Tests deeper platform configuration problems Disruptive; can erase apps, settings, or data Last resort, after recording passwords and settings

Have the Wi-Fi password and Netflix sign-in details available before signing out, reinstalling, or resetting. Factory-reset steps can erase saved settings, applications, and personal data, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use them only after simpler measures fail.

When should you contact the ISP or device manufacturer?

Contact the ISP when Netflix fails on multiple devices, Fast.com shows an abnormal result, the home network repeatedly disconnects, there is an internet outage, or DNS and connection settings cannot be corrected. Tell the ISP whether the problem affects one device or several and whether the affected device uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Netflix specifically recommends supplying those details when investigating connection and DNS problems.

Contact the TV or streaming-device manufacturer when Netflix fails only on one device after the app refreshes and network tests. The manufacturer may need to help with firmware updates, Smart Hub or equivalent platform resets, compatibility, or a factory reset. Keep the device model, operating-system or firmware version, Netflix app version, country, and connection type available because platform instructions and availability can vary.

Do not assume that one device’s 25% progress bar means Netflix is globally down. A broader incident becomes more plausible only after the same failure is reproduced across devices or networks, or after Netflix support confirms a service problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Netflix stuck at 25% an official error code?

No. Netflix does not document 25% as a universal standalone error code. Reports from several device communities use 25% to describe a loading symptom, while Netflix’s official guidance discusses stuck app data, device problems, and network instability more generally.

Should I factory-reset my TV if Netflix is stuck at 25%?

A factory reset can erase saved settings, apps, and personal data, so use it only after restarting the device and network, testing another title and device, checking the connection, and refreshing or reinstalling Netflix. Save the Wi-Fi password and Netflix sign-in details first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will changing DNS fix Netflix not going past 25%?

Changing DNS is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. Restore custom DNS, VPN, proxy, filtering, or manually configured network settings to default values first; ask the ISP to investigate DNS when Netflix still cannot reach its services.

The Bottom Line

Netflix stuck at 25% is a symptom rather than a confirmed error code. Fully restart the device, restart the modem and router, test another title and device, check Netflix or Fast.com, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, and restore custom VPN, proxy, or DNS settings. Refresh or reset the app only after those reversible tests; contact the ISP or device manufacturer when the failure pattern identifies their part of the connection.
