For a first watch, use release order: Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, Hannibal Rising, and then NBC’s Hannibal Seasons 1–3. There is no single screen continuity containing all of them.
For chronology, watch the main film cycle as Hannibal Rising → Red Dragon → The Silence of the Lambs → Hannibal. Keep Manhunter separate because it is an alternate adaptation of the same novel as Red Dragon, and treat NBC’s series as its own continuity.

Quick answer
There is no single screen continuity that contains every Hannibal Lecter film and television series. For a first viewing, use release order: Manhunter, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, Hannibal Rising, then Hannibal Seasons 1–3.
If you want the story chronology of the main four-film cycle, watch Hannibal Rising → Red Dragon → The Silence of the Lambs → Hannibal. Treat NBC’s Hannibal as a separate continuity and watch its three seasons consecutively. Manhunter is not an earlier chapter of the 2002 Red Dragon; both films adapt Thomas Harris’s novel Red Dragon in different versions.

Every major Hannibal Lecter screen entry in release order
| Order | Title | Format | U.S. release or premiere | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Manhunter | Film | August 15, 1986 | Michael Mann’s adaptation of Red Dragon. Brian Cox plays a Lecter analogue named “Lecktor.” |
| 2 | The Silence of the Lambs | Film | February 14, 1991 | Jonathan Demme’s adaptation starring Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling and Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter. |
| 3 | Hannibal | Film | February 9, 2001 | Ridley Scott’s sequel to The Silence of the Lambs. Hopkins returns, while Julianne Moore plays Clarice. |
| 4 | Red Dragon | Film | October 4, 2002 | Brett Ratner’s second screen adaptation of Harris’s Red Dragon, this time with Hopkins as Lecter. |
| 5 | Hannibal Rising | Film | 2007; U.S. release commonly listed as February 9 | Peter Webber’s origin story about Lecter’s youth. It is the earliest story in the Hopkins-associated film cycle but the last of those films to be released. |
| 6 | Hannibal, Season 1 | Television series | April 4, 2013 | The beginning of Bryan Fuller’s separate reimagining of Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham. |
| 7 | Hannibal, Season 2 | Television series | February 28, 2014 | The second season of the NBC continuity. |
| 8 | Hannibal, Season 3 | Television series | June 4, 2015 | The final released season, incorporating the show’s versions of Hannibal and Red Dragon material. |
The first five entries are feature films, but they are not five perfectly continuous chapters. The television series then starts a new interpretation rather than continuing the films.
Best order for first-time viewers: release order
- Manhunter (1986)
- The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
- Hannibal (2001)
- Red Dragon (2002)
- Hannibal Rising (2007)
- Hannibal Season 1 (2013)
- Hannibal Season 2 (2014)
- Hannibal Season 3 (2015)
Release order is the strongest introduction because it shows how the character and the material changed across directors, actors, formats, and decades. It also makes the duplicate adaptation of Red Dragon easier to understand: you encounter Mann’s Manhunter first, then later see Ratner’s Red Dragon reinterpret the same basic source story with Hopkins.
This order also preserves the experience of The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal as the clearest feature-film continuation. Watching Hannibal Rising first gives away background that the earlier films were not designed to reveal at that point in the franchise’s release history.
Chronological order for the main film continuity
For a story-focused film marathon, use this order:
- Hannibal Rising: Lecter’s youth and the formative experiences that shape his later identity.
- Red Dragon: Will Graham’s earlier confrontation with the imprisoned Lecter and the investigation involving Francis Dolarhyde.
- The Silence of the Lambs: Clarice Starling consults Lecter while investigating Buffalo Bill.
- Hannibal: the later continuation of Lecter’s relationship with Clarice, alongside the Mason Verger plot.
This is the most useful chronology for the four films commonly grouped as the Anthony Hopkins-era Lecter cycle. However, “continuity” should be understood as a practical viewing grouping, not a guarantee that every production detail fits together without friction. The films were made by different creative teams over many years, and Hannibal Rising is an origin story produced after the other three story positions had already been established.

Manhunter should not be placed directly before the 2002 Red Dragon as though the two films were consecutive events. Michael Mann’s 1986 film is an adaptation of Harris’s first Lecter novel, Red Dragon. The 2002 film is another adaptation of that same novel, with different casting, style, and adaptation choices.

In a chronological film watch, watch Red Dragon as the version belonging to the Hopkins-associated cycle, then watch Manhunter afterward as an alternate interpretation of the same underlying case. In a release-date marathon, watch Manhunter first because it was released first.
How to watch NBC’s Hannibal
Watch the television series in its simple broadcast order:
- Season 1 (2013)
- Season 2 (2014)
- Season 3 (2015)
The series is Bryan Fuller’s independent reimagining of Lecter and Will Graham. It starts with Lecter working with Graham before the familiar Red Dragon setup, focusing on the developing relationship between the psychiatrist and the FBI profiler. Its casting, chronology, visual language, and interpretation of the characters belong to the NBC continuity, not to the Anthony Hopkins films.
Rank #3
Season 3 later draws on the show’s versions of material from Hannibal and Red Dragon. That does not turn the season into a bridge to the films. It is a television adaptation strategy that reshapes Harris’s material inside Fuller’s own story world.
Do not interleave the series with the films episode by episode. Finish Seasons 1–3 as one uninterrupted television narrative, either after the films or as its own separate viewing project. NBC ended the released series after Season 3; there is no completed fourth season to add to the order.

Should you watch Clarice?
Clarice is an optional adjacent series, not a core Hannibal Lecter entry. The CBS show premiered in 2021 as a follow-up to the 1991 The Silence of the Lambs, with Clarice Starling dealing with the aftermath of the Buffalo Bill case.
Hannibal Lecter does not appear as an on-screen character in the series, and the character is not named because of rights limitations. For that reason, do not place Clarice in the required “every Hannibal Lecter movie and show” list. If you want to explore related screen material, watch it after The Silence of the Lambs—or after the core film marathon—as a Clarice-centered continuation rather than a Lecter story.
Which viewing plan should you choose?
| Your goal | Recommended order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First time with the franchise | All entries in release order | Preserves the historical evolution and makes the two Red Dragon adaptations clear. |
| Only the main feature-film story | Hannibal Rising → Red Dragon → The Silence of the Lambs → Hannibal | Follows the practical story chronology of the Hopkins-associated film cycle. |
| Compare the two Red Dragon adaptations | Manhunter → Red Dragon | Places Mann’s 1986 interpretation beside the later Hopkins version without treating them as one timeline. |
| Watch the NBC interpretation | Hannibal Seasons 1 → 2 → 3 | Keeps the show’s independent continuity intact. |
| Explore Clarice Starling’s later story | The Silence of the Lambs → Clarice | Positions the adjacent CBS series after the case that it follows up. |
Physical-media and availability notes
Streaming availability changes by country, service, and date, so there is no responsible universal streaming list for these titles without a fresh territory-specific check. Search each film or series in your country rather than assuming that one platform carries the whole franchise.

Collectors should also check the exact region, cut, and release year before buying a disc. A Manhunter Blu-ray, for example, may be sold in editions whose availability and specifications differ by market. Do not assume that one box set contains every adaptation or all three seasons of the NBC series unless the individual product listing confirms it.
