The best shows on Max right now (July 2024) are House of the Dragon Season 2 for weekly spectacle, Hacks for sharp comedy, The Last of Us for emotional survival drama, and The Sympathizer or Fantasmas for shorter 2024 viewing. Max’s July 2024 U.S. slate was relatively light, so the strongest list also includes HBO catalog classics.
This article is a historical July 2024 U.S. snapshot. Max’s official calendar centered the month’s new scripted programming on Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, while House of the Dragon Season 2 was the major ongoing event after its June 16 premiere. Contemporary July coverage also described the slate as comparatively quiet, making a useful list of ongoing series and catalog favorites more valuable than a premiere-only roundup.
Key takeaways
- House of the Dragon Season 2 was the defining Max watch in July 2024, but the season premiered on June 16 and continued weekly rather than debuting in July.
- Kite Man: Hell Yeah! was Max’s main scripted July premiere, launching on July 18, 2024, with two episodes followed by weekly episodes through September 12.
- Hacks is the strongest comedy recommendation, while The Last of Us is the best choice for emotionally intense prestige drama.
- The Sympathizer and Fantasmas provide shorter 2024 viewing options: one literary and politically charged, the other surreal and visually inventive.
- Succession, Chernobyl, The White Lotus, The Wire, and The Sopranos are catalog favorites for viewers who want completed or established HBO dramas rather than a July premiere.
Which shows are the best bets for most Max viewers?
House of the Dragon, Hacks, and The Last of Us are the broadest recommendations in this July 2024 U.S. snapshot. House of the Dragon supplies the weekly spectacle, Hacks balances comedy with character drama, and The Last of Us turns a video-game adaptation into a relationship-centered survival story.

| The Last of Us | Prestige drama and survival horror | HBO drama; Season 1 is the July entry point | Bleak, violent, and emotionally intense |

| The Wire | Crime drama and institutional analysis | Completed five-season HBO drama | Demanding long-form viewing that rewards patience |

| Kite Man: Hell Yeah! | Adult animation and DC-adjacent comedy | Max Original; July 18 premiere | Targeted recommendation for Harley Quinn viewers |
Why is House of the Dragon the top July 2024 pick?
House of the Dragon Season 2 is the top July 2024 pick because it was Max’s major ongoing fantasy event, not because it was a new July premiere. The second season premiered on June 16, 2024, and continued its weekly run into July, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 2 listing.

The HBO drama is set roughly 200 years before Game of Thrones and follows the Targaryen succession conflict. The appeal is a combination of dragons, dynastic politics, expensive production design, and the kind of weekly plot debate that makes a show feel like an appointment.
House of the Dragon works best for viewers who already know Game of Thrones or have completed at least Season 1 of House of the Dragon. New viewers can begin with the first season, but Season 2 is a continuation of an existing story world rather than a clean standalone entry point. HBO’s official background materials identify the series as being based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.
Is Hacks the best Max comedy to watch?
Hacks is the best Max comedy recommendation for viewers who want sharp jokes without giving up emotional stakes. The Max/HBO Max comedy-drama centers on Deborah Vance, a veteran Las Vegas comedian, and Ava, a younger comedy writer, as documented in Rotten Tomatoes’ series listing.
The Deborah-and-Ava relationship gives Hacks its strongest engine. The series can deliver workplace friction and comic set pieces, but the central appeal is the changing mentor-and-protégé dynamic. Hacks is a safer recommendation than a purely experimental comedy for viewers who want recognizable characters, complicated choices, and a show that can be funny and uncomfortable in the same episode.
Hacks was not a July 2024 premiere, and this historical guide does not assign a current-season count. The recommendation belongs in the evergreen Max catalog portion of the list, not the new-in-July section.

Is The Last of Us worth watching for viewers who do not play games?
The Last of Us is worth watching for non-gamers who want a serious, character-first survival drama rather than action alone. The series follows Joel and Ellie through a post-civilization-collapse world and is based on the video game, a premise described by Max’s help-center page for The Last of Us.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Season 1 is the appropriate entry point for a July 2024 viewing guide. The series uses survival horror, violence, and a devastated world to explore trust, attachment, and moral compromise. Viewers seeking a light adventure should choose something else; viewers comfortable with bleak subject matter will find a high-profile prestige drama whose appeal is not limited to its infected and action sequences.
The show also fits the July 2024 prestige-TV conversation. The Associated Press’ July 17, 2024 roundup of Emmy-nominated shows included The Last of Us among prominent series worth streaming.
Which shorter 2024 series should you watch?
The Sympathizer and Fantasmas are the strongest shorter 2024 choices on this list. The Sympathizer suits viewers who want literary political drama and divided identity; Fantasmas suits viewers who want six episodes of surreal comedy that can be sampled without committing to a long franchise.
The Sympathizer
The Sympathizer is the pick for a challenging, compact drama that uses espionage to examine cultural displacement, divided identity, and political history. The limited series premiered on April 14, 2024, and adapts Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, details recorded in Metacritic’s reviews page and series details page.
The Sympathizer should not be sold as a conventional spy thriller. The series combines an espionage framework with dark humor, geographical dislocation, and a deliberately hybrid creative approach. The result is a better match for viewers who prefer a politically charged literary adaptation over a straightforward action series.
Fantasmas
Fantasmas is the pick for inventive visual storytelling, surreal comedy, and a short commitment. The six-episode HBO Original comedy was created, written, and directed by Julio Torres. Max’s June 2024 programming announcement describes Torres searching for a lost gold oyster earring while meeting eccentric characters in a dreamy alternate version of New York City.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Fantasmas is intentionally strange, colorful, and vignette-driven. Viewers looking for a traditional multi-camera sitcom may find the format unfamiliar, while viewers who enjoy absurd premises and visual experimentation have a clear July-era Max recommendation.
Which classic HBO shows on Max deserve a place on the list?
Succession, Chernobyl, The White Lotus, The Wire, and The Sopranos deserve places as catalog favorites because each supplies something the July premiere slate cannot: a finished story, a concentrated limited series, or a major HBO viewing experience that rewards a longer commitment.
Succession: best for ruthless family and corporate power
Succession is the best completed binge for viewers who want verbal combat, family dysfunction, corporate intrigue, and political-economic satire. The HBO drama follows the Roy family as members compete for control and succession around a global media conglomerate. Warner Bros. Discovery groups Succession among its critically acclaimed HBO and Max programming in its 2024 annual report.
Succession works especially well for viewers who want a finished power struggle rather than a weekly release. The recommendation does not require plot spoilers: the dense dialogue, shifting alliances, and moral compromises are the reason to watch.
Chernobyl: best short series on Max
Chernobyl is the best short-series choice for viewers who want a complete historical disaster drama in five episodes. The HBO limited series dramatizes the 1986 nuclear disaster and the institutional consequences that followed.
Chernobyl is concentrated, severe, and built around sustained dread rather than casual background viewing. Disaster imagery, death, illness, and psychological pressure are central content warnings. Dramatized scenes should not be treated as documentary fact, even though the series draws on a real historical catastrophe.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The White Lotus: best for social satire and mystery
The White Lotus is the best choice for social satire, ensemble drama, and darkly comic vacation mysteries. The anthology-style HBO series places wealthy guests and resort staff at the center of stories about privilege, resentment, status, and hidden conflict.

- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
Each season functions as a largely self-contained story, so viewers can approach The White Lotus without the long continuity commitment required by The Wire or The Sopranos. The show’s mysteries and major deaths are part of the experience, making spoiler-free recommendations more useful than plot summaries.
The Wire: best for institutional analysis
The Wire is the best catalog choice for viewers willing to make a serious long-form commitment. The completed five-season HBO drama begins with crime and law enforcement but expands into Baltimore institutions including politics, education, labor, and the press.
The Wire rewards patience because the ensemble structure and institutional focus are broader than a conventional police procedural. Viewers seeking a fast weekend binge should choose Chernobyl instead; viewers willing to watch all five seasons can use The Wire as a sustained study of how systems shape individual choices.

The Sopranos is the best starting point for viewers who have never watched a foundational HBO drama. The completed series follows New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano as he manages criminal obligations, family pressures, and psychological conflict.
The Sopranos pairs a crime story with a family drama and character study. The series contains substantial violence and mature themes, but its lasting recommendation is the tension between Tony’s public criminal role, private family life, and attempts to understand himself.

Kite Man: Hell Yeah! was the clearest Max scripted premiere in July 2024. The adult animated series debuted on July 18 with two episodes, followed by one episode per week through September 12, according to Max’s official release announcement.
Kite Man and Golden Glider open a bar near Lex Luthor’s Legion of Doom. The series uses characters connected to Harley Quinn, making Kite Man: Hell Yeah! a natural targeted recommendation for viewers who like adult animation and DC-adjacent comedy. The lighter tone is useful in a list otherwise dominated by fantasy conflict, historical disaster, and psychological drama.

Other July programming to know
Max’s official July calendar also listed Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants, Wild Wild Space, and returning library content. A contemporary Max July programming announcement provides the dated release context. Max’s July slate was comparatively quiet beside some rival streaming platforms, which is why this guide combines ongoing series, catalog favorites, and the small number of July premieres rather than pretending every recommendation was new.
How should you choose the right Max show?
Choose the show by the kind of viewing experience you want, not simply by whether a title premiered in July:
- Choose House of the Dragon for the biggest weekly fantasy event, dragons, dynastic conflict, and political spectacle.
- Choose Hacks for the safest comedy recommendation with emotional stakes and a strong mentor-protégé relationship.
- Choose The Last of Us for a high-profile survival drama in which character relationships matter as much as action.
- Choose The Sympathizer for a compact, literary, politically charged limited series.
- Choose Fantasmas for six episodes of surreal, colorful, unconventional comedy.
- Choose Succession for a finished power struggle, or Chernobyl for a five-episode historical drama with a definitive ending.
- Choose The White Lotus for social satire and ensemble mystery, The Wire for institutional analysis, or The Sopranos for foundational crime drama.
- Choose Kite Man: Hell Yeah! for adult animation and a lighter July-specific premiere.
How should July 2024 Max availability be understood?
July 2024 Max availability means a historical U.S. snapshot, not a promise that every older catalog title remains available in every country or on every date. The July list distinguishes the dated Max programming calendar from catalog recommendations, and older HBO favorites should be checked against the current Max catalog in the reader’s region before starting a binge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe distinction also matters for branding: not every recommendation is a Max Original. Kite Man: Hell Yeah! and Fantasmas were identified in Max programming materials as Max or HBO Originals, while The Wire, The Sopranos, Chernobyl, The White Lotus, and Succession are established HBO catalog dramas. Availability, licensing, and regional catalog placement can change after the July 2024 snapshot.
The Bottom Line
For one July 2024 recommendation, choose House of the Dragon Season 2 if you want the week’s major fantasy conversation, Hacks if you want comedy with emotional depth, or The Last of Us if you want prestige survival drama. Choose Chernobyl for a complete five-episode experience and Kite Man: Hell Yeah! for the clearest July premiere. Treat the older HBO titles as catalog favorites and verify regional availability before watching.
